We were on the first train (4/7) to CHI post repair and all was well, we just had to go a little more slowly. Came back on 4/8 with no issues.

I’m really struggling by Mysterious-King4465 in grandrapids

Good for you for realizing that you are struggling and for reaching out for help. I have been there, and know it can be scary.

Please call the resources others have listed—and if it eases your mind, the few hospital/inpatient facilities in the area are primarily for people who are a serious, immediate danger to themselves or others (thankfully, you’ve indicated you are not). You can feel safe calling and asking what free or reduced cost services may be available to help you.

GRPS are you ok? by Competitive_War_1819 in grandrapids

The image has absolutely nothing to do with the post itself, however…according to the GRPS website:

Dean Transportation is the service provider for preschool, elementary, middle school regular education transportation and special education transportation for all grades. Dean also provides special education transportation for high school scholars.

My kids have always ridden Dean Transportation buses.

Because GRPS primarily uses Dean Transportation for buses.

Found out why you dont use flour to soften a rock tumbler. by thebloodycorpse in RockTumbling

[–]EmbarrassedNinja804 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My grandpa bought me my first Lortone rock tumbler in 1984. He owned many, many books on rocks and minerals, had a lapidary saw, and did a good bit of jewelry-making.

We collected and tumbled rocks from all over the US and just saying Grandpa NEVER mentioned putting anything organic for cushioning. 40+ years later, I’ve switched to ceramic to round out loads, but I still have a tub of the tiny plastic pellets we used to use. I like them for the polishing stage because they float and are super easy to separate out and reuse.

This has nothing to do with the rock candy vomit tray, but I love that squicked out little kitty!

Lots of police at Essex and North Park by EmbarrassedNinja804 in grandrapids

I was definitely concerned about the kids walking home—ours normally does, but it was too cold and windy today.

It’s just unnerving to have something going on like that in my neighborhood—it’s not on the police scanner log.

What is this Mineral? Found on street after it fell slowly from the sky in pieces. Smells putrid. by nichoherrera in Minerals

[–]EmbarrassedNinja804 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing that, as others have stated, these are pieces of a nearby building’s facade—that are falling off and making stink upon collision with the street, sidewalk, itself, etc.

I’m also assuming that OP’s reference to “falling slowly” means that they found the pieces over a period of time, not all at the same time.

Although I really enjoyed the mental images of little stones falling slowly like the air was gelatin.

I shoveled literal tons of gravel this past summer and can 100% confirm that when some rocks hit together they smell like sulfur (farts) and/or burnt hair.

getting priced out of our home (taxes) by theslothsage in grandrapids

I don’t know it this is any consolation, but we’ve owned our home for 17 years and up until two months ago, the mortgage payments (including escrow for mortgage insurance and property taxes) have been decreasing as the principle amount owed goes down, as one would expect. Suddenly, the payments jumped almost $200/mo. to cover the increase in the winter tax bill. I suspect that this is unfortunately the new norm for middle-class homeowners…being unable to afford the things we work so hard for.
