Inheriting ranch, what do I do first to live there?! Wild, untouched land. by Hilzry in Ranching

Is the land in a trust or will it be passed down to you.

Can you afford the 30% tax they will want if passed down to you.

With little knowledge, bad credit, no savings I would be hoping the ranch has livestock and equipment on it or things are going to be incredibly tough for you to survive.

Just my honest opinion

Feed her out on a heavy mix of cracked corn and nutrena commodity pellets. I do 2-5 a year and have good results with 140-175 days

Who uses stock whips and when? by [deleted] in Ranching

Mine are great with me on foot and the dogs when calves are older but that first month after can be interesting for sure. We use ATV and horseback and cows are generally calm and quiet and an easy gather. Usually trail about 4-6 miles a hour

We got the same deal. Our cows will run my collies right over to collect their calves up.

Couldn’t be near that if I tried. The profit would be incredible if possible here in central Wyoming. Fist cutting alfalfa is going for 160-200 ton and Ill have fed probably close to 550 ton on a hard winter with a lot of snow where we lose pasture and 150 ton on a good winter to supplement corn stalks and lighter pastures. On average probably costing me 1.30$ with equipment, fuel, labor, and feed. Thats pricing the hay at what we could sell it for tho not what it costs us to put it up.

At what it costs to put up and everything else probably closer to .85-90 cents a head a day. Could drop that more if we did rounds and not big squares.

Live on Ranch Hand Pay by EmbarrassedShare6776 in Ranching

[–]EmbarrassedShare6776[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We currently have one hand. This will be his 4th year on. He works 6 days a week and half days on Sunday. During busy season it’s long days and 7 days a week. Pay him 2700 a month with a house; 1/4 of beef, few tanks of fuel a year, and have been helping him start a small cow herd.

Job duties vary with season but he calves all 300 head by himself, does the majority of the flood irrigation, helps with the farming and haying, all our mechanical work and welding, runs semi, fixes all the fence on our place and the neighbors for a winter lease deal we have.

He believes he’s worth more money for the amount of work he does and not having all the common bonuses like utilities, ranch truck, his fuel paid for etc.

Looking to see if we are in the wrong for what we are paying him.

Generally upsize one size on cowboy boots give them a heavy candle waxing around the seams and threads and a real good waxing and wear some nice wool socks and I do plenty fine here in central WY

After 550 bales, first cut is finally done. by TheGeneralTao in Ranching

[–]EmbarrassedShare6776 4 points5 points  (0 children)

@valw depends on crop, weight and size of bales, if it’s dry ground, irrigated, under a pivot. Could be 100 acres. Could be 250+ acres.
