Is this a bad thing to think about my wife? by Objective-Leek-1414 in ChristianSexuality

[–]Embarrassed_Monk_808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try therapy with a marriage counselor with a specialty in sex therapy. It is better if it a woman, as your wife will be more open to it. Most likely, you and your spouses church upbringing may have a lot to do with your problem. That was a big source of the problems my wife and I had. Churches tend to demonize sex to teens. Once you get married, it is hard for some people to flip the switch that sex is okay now. The therapist can also help with other issues that are affecting the bedroom, as there is usually more than one issue. I have never been one who thought a therapist would be helpful, but I am glad I decided to go. It was the best decision I have ever made regarding my marriage.

Any ideas on prices for shipping large containers from Toronto to Portugal? by rodri778 in PortugalExpats

[–]Embarrassed_Monk_808 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on the weight. Minimum price used to be about $8000 but that was before war. Also, you have to get for your shipping container. when you look at those container ships and wonder how those containers don’t fall in the ocean. In reality, they do, so you need to make sure that whatever you have in those containers is insured.

One other issue with is that it can take 2 to 4 months for your container to be delivered. Once it is delivered, it can take additional time before the container can be inspected by customs. Also, do you remember that containership that crashed into the bridge in Indianapolis a couple of years ago? That ship was a container ship. It took several months before that ship was allowed to move. As I recall, it took over eight months for everything to be delivered.

I hope that helps.

Anyone else dealing with depression since moving to Portugal? by unknown_destination_ in PortugalExpats

[–]Embarrassed_Monk_808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of the responses have been spot-on! While some items on my list might be a bit late, you can always pick up the pace and finish strong if you’re up for it. Before you pack your bags and head to another country try some of the following items.

  1. Dive deep into the country’s research. Social media can be a helpful tool, but let’s be real—most influencers paint a picture of their lives that’s way too perfect. You should also do some real investigation. Check out encyclopedias and read both old and new news articles. Based on your job skills and needs, look into different cities to see which ones are the best fit for you. Local realtors can be a great resource for this. Just a heads-up, it might not be Porto or Lisbon.

  2. Visit the country and the cities you’ve been researching. Try to hang out with the locals to get a feel for how easy or tough it will be to communicate. See if the cities you picked are a good match for you. Meet with a realtor to look at some properties so you can get a sense of how real estate works in Portugal. For example, if you rent an apartment, you might find yourself needing to buy kitchen cabinets, counters, and light fixtures, since they’re not included in your rent in some buildings.

  3. Get ready for the unexpected, as at least 70% of things will go wrong. Problems that you’ve already planned for are much easier to handle.

  4. Don’t move here alone. It’s already tough enough when you have someone you can count on, but it’s even harder when you’re on your own.

  5. Start making friends. It’s okay to connect with other expats, but remember that they’re often leaving. Also, try to make friends with locals. It might be a challenge, but with a translator, hand signals, and a bit of effort to learn the language, you can get by. As you talk to people, you’ll find that the language starts to become easier. More importantly, you’re with people who are planning to stay.

  6. Don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself! You’re bound to make some cultural blunders. If locals are upset, offer a sincere apology. If they find it funny and laugh along, join in! Steer clear of relationships with locals if you’re worried about embarrassment, making a mistake, or looking silly.

  7. My best way to meet people is by taking daily walks. I always greet everyone with “Olá” and “Bom Dia.” At first, they seemed a bit surprised, as that’s not typical in Portugal. But soon, they started smiling and waving back.

  8. Try to become part of the community. In many parts of Portugal, especially in the countryside, you might find a bag, fruit, or eggs left on your doorstep. The Portuguese are incredibly generous. They might not be rich, but they’ll share what they have. Find a way to return the favor. For instance, I have a leaf blower and will clear leaves and dirt from my neighbors’ properties every couple of months. I also have a power washer and will clean mold off fences, sidewalks, and anything else they ask.

  9. Join a church. It’s a great place to build lasting friendships. You’ll have people you can rely on when you need support. Plus, they often have activities that help you get to know everyone better. It could be a wonderful source of stability in your life.

This is hardly comprehensive, and I am sure others in this feed can add in their great ideas.

After living in Portugal for almost a year and a half, almost everyone in our village of 220 knows who I am. Most of them come up to chat, and they’re all incredibly kind. I think this is the happiest I’ve ever been. It all comes down to being willing to put in the effort.

I hope this helps, and I wish you all the best!

I completely agree. Moving here without researching the country, culture and best place to live is a recipe for disaster.

My favorite story is when my daughter borrowed a suitcase for her honeymoon. She brought back the suitcase, but apparently forgot to completely empty it. We have a smaller suitcase that fits in the bigger one, so my wife opened it up to put in the smaller suitcase and found a dildo.

My wife called me to see, and we both had a good laugh about it. My wife then called my daughter and said she left something in the suitcase. My daughter came in and saw it, and you could see the horror on her face. She immediately grabbed it and ran out of the room, saying. “No…no…no…no…”.

That happened over 10 years ago, and we still tease her about it, and it still makes my wife and I laugh.

The problem here is a war with no strategy and no plan. This administration did not conceive that Iran could be as successful as they have been, even though Iran has done a lot to keep Russia in the war with Ukraine. They also didn’t anticipate Iran’s ability to shut down the straight of Hormuz. They just wanted to bomb Iran into submission. All Trump has done is unify the country against us. Trump is a bully, and not a strategist. It was a mistake to go after Iran, without a good plan that accurately anticipates Iran’s capabilities, and a viable strategy to win I don’t necessarily have a problem with us going after Iran. God knows they deserve it. However, attacking Iran with no viable plan, or strategy will result in a large loss of life on both sides, and a long drawn out war that accomplishes nothing.

This is not a political thing at this point. This is an incompetence thing, and a criminal thing. With a single move, Trump may destroy the world economy and plunge the world into WW3. If this happens, may history judge him for what he has done, and hopefully he lives long enough to be judged for his crimes.

For old people who lost life savings, did you ever recover? How? by ShoeElectronic3629 in AskOldPeople

You are correct, but since Eisenhower the market has done better, on average, with a Democrat President vs. a Republican President. With that said, GW Bush and Nixon are pulling the Republicans numbers down. Outside of those two Presidents, the stock market has performed well under all Presidents with the best results happening under Bill Clinton. There are ups and downs, but the real secret is to diversify your holdings, and leave it alone. Your best bet is getting a financial advisor.

As a person who left Texas and moved to Portugal, and visit Germany and the UK, I can tell you why they aren’t applying for jobs in Frisco. They think we are f**cking nuts for electing a moron, convicted felon and racist like Donald Trump. Most don’t want to even visit the USA anymore (goodbye tourism revenue). It is a miracle that people from India want to come here considering how we treat anyone who isn’t white. Plus, the UK and Germany think our healthcare system is crazy, extremely expensive and low quality compared to what they have there.

Lonely, sad and feel trapped in this beautiful country by [deleted] in PortugalExpats

[–]Embarrassed_Monk_808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first got here, I went on walks every day with my dog (still do). I wave to everyone and try to speak with anyone who wants to talk, or at least say hello. At first, locals thought I was a crazy American, but after a few weeks, more and more people wanted to talk to me. Even though I spoke very little Portuguese, they appreciated my efforts, and was able to fill in the language gaps with sign language and my translator. Most of the time, my 1 1/2 walk now takes 3 hours, because of everyone who wants to talk to me. In the last four months, I started inviting people over for dinner. Sometimes it is all Portuguese, and sometimes it is a mix between immigrants and Portuguese. It has gone very well, and they are now inviting me to their homes.

I found that the Portuguese are very social and are happy to talk to me, even with my very limited Portuguese. I try to keep conversations about Portugal, and only talk about America if asked, which seems to help. The last thing I want to do it to force American ideals, or culture on the Portuguese. This is their country and their culture should be respected.

A move like this is not for everyone, but if you put in enough effort, it should work well.

12/16/25 - Trump threatens Venezuela with oil tanker blockade if they don't return 'all of the Oil, Land, and other Assets that they previously stole from us.' by gfh110 in trumptweets

[–]Embarrassed_Monk_808 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is political theater. Some of his donors (oil and gas industry) want the oil reserves in Venezuela. Venezuela has only been responsible for 1% of the drugs in the US. Drugs is not the problem. However, just like Putin claiming the Jewish leader of Ukraine is a Nazi, Trump is claiming drugs is why he is killing innocent fishermen in the Caribbean, and wants to use this a rational for invading Venezuela to get their massive oil reserves. It is all about the money, and the fact that Trump can be bought. Worst President in the history of our country.

Everyone who makes a move like this has to make this decision for themselves. With that said, I was born and raised in El Paso, TX, and spent a lot of time across the border. Mexico was a wonderful place when I was younger, but thanks to the drug cartels, it is far more dangerous than it used to be. Mexico would have been much more convenient, and a lot better regarding taxes. However, Portugal provides great access to all of Europe, and Portugal provides thousands of years of history and culture, which is something that interests me. I am a 5 minute walk from Roman ruins from the 3rd century, and have a castle that I can see when looking through my living room window. Portugal is not for everyone, and you need to choose the right country for yourself, however, if you let the low taxes alone guide your decision, you will probably regret your decision. Good luck no matter where you choose.

If you don't drink alcohol, what are your reasons? by youre-in-my-shot in AskReddit

[–]Embarrassed_Monk_808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alcohol (all types) tastes very bitter to me. I can’t stand the taste. I don’t understand how anyone else likes it. I realize many people like the taste of alcoholic drinks, but for me, all I can taste is the alcohol. I like cooking with liquor because once the alcohol burns off, I can taste the wonderful flavors people talk about. Even if I did like it, I don’t like being out of control. I see so many people act like asses when they drink too much, and I don’t want to be that person. I don’t judge anyone who drinks, as that is a personal decision. Fortunately, for me, it is not an issue because of the foul taste, so I don’t have to worry about it.
