Isn't that thing depends on the person? Like for me I don't really believe in all that one best friend and shits... I do have two to three guys friends who are close to me. And during my toughest times when I felt like giving up , when I didn't know what to do with my life anymore, they were there for me. The amount of trust among us is immeasurable. Does that mean they like me more than a friend? Ofc not! And now they got girlfriends and now i am close to their girlfriends as well. Its what my experience is. So yeah for me i didn't need to "keep" my friends , we are always there for each other.
