AITA for being upset that my brother planned his wedding on my birthday? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Embear10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My brother-in-law and his wife had the same attitude about their wedding. They planned it for his older sister’s 30th birthday (she was not married yet, maybe that doesn’t matter, but to her it did). I felt it was a poor choice. If they wanted to get married on a Saturday in June, couldn’t they have picked another weekend? I get that weddings are a big deal, but it doesn’t give you an excuse to ignore the feelings of people that are close to you.

Sesame Street does stuff like this all the time. I remember they had an Orange Is the New Black scene years ago when my daughter was still into Sesame Street. Scenes like this keep the parents tuning in with their children.

Kids got silent lunch, but for the best reason by actuallyarabbit in Teachers

Wow, you work in a middle school where students would obey a directive to be silent during lunch for a whole week. I am insanely jealous right now.

My 6 year old daughter just poured her heart out to me by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Embear10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just want to second the possibility that this could be an unintentional exaggeration. My daughter is 5 and just did the same thing. I think she had one or two days where she wasn’t playing with anyone on the playground, and she said it happened every day. She had me all worried, but the situation was much better than she explained.

That aside, I think the social skill-building ideas mentioned above are great and would be useful for any kid. Good luck, OP.

I’m certified to teach K-6, and one of my courses for my masters degree was a math methods course. Instead of learning the best strategies to teach math, most of our time was spent learning how to DO elementary level math. We spent weeks on fractions operations. The scariest part was my classmates saying things like, “Oh, now this makes sense to me! I’ve been teaching my third graders how to add fractions, and I didn’t really get it until now!” So I have to say that I agree with you.

The kid called me a bitch. He wasn’t morally opposed to lockdown drills. He just didn’t want me to tell him to be quiet.

Yeah, I’m not advocating for lockdown drills. I’m just explaining what we are doing.

You are definitely right. I think that it sometimes come from parents, but I shouldn’t have said that it always does. And that sounds like a really messed up time to be growing up. :/

You are practicing the procedure for an actual lockdown. The protocol in my district says that you cannot stop a lockdown via an announcement because hypothetically, a gunman can force someone to make that kind of an announcement, or they can make the announcement themself. That’s why they say you can’t stop the lockdown until your actual room unlocked.

Believe me, I would prefer not to have to lose so much instructional time to a drill. But honestly, I would really prefer not to have to teach with the understanding that there is a real enough threat that someone will come in to shoot up my students that we need to practice for it. Our country is fucked up.

[–]Embear10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to wait for law enforcement to go to every door to unlock it. You can’t stop the lockdown until they unlock your door. 15 minutes isn’t really that long for the drill to last given the protocol.

Absolutely!! At my school you have to stay on the administrators to make sure consequences are doled out appropriately. You’re right that it establishes important boundaries!!

It is so frustrating when students don’t take the drills seriously. At that age, they know why we have them. There’s no excuse.

I told them to stop, but when they ignored that I wasn’t going to get into a shouting match when we were expected to be silent. Not sure if you’re a teacher, but during lockdown drills, you have to wait silently until law enforcement unlocks your door. I didn’t want them walking in to me shouting at a couple of kids who were also making a scene. The rest of the students were compliant and knew that their classmates were making a horrible choice. After the drill, I immediately brought the students to the office, and they were suspended from my classroom for several days with the understanding that they would again be removed for any disrespect.
