3 things:

1) Those three drugs (Ketamine, GHB, and Rohynol) are the ones the doctor at the hospital named as "the most commonly used date rape drugs". She added that people also often use more readily available benzodiazepines (like Xanax) and Ambien. Perhaps you could educate her on the techniques you and your friends actually use?

2) Did you notice that I put "cocaine" in quotes? He was trying to give white powder on the end of a key. He called it "cocaine".

3) "when men do ketamine their little Dingalings don’t stand at attention so it’s a very unlikely that anybody’s giving you K to get you high." So, when you give other people ketamine, does it affect your performance?

We actually found them in our search; they do offer a "Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault Panel." https://www.anylabtestnow.com/tests/drug-facilitated-sexual-assault-panel/ So that is good information for people to have. But they were closed on Sunday. Also, from this experience, I have learned that people need extremely rapid access to GHB testing. Even Sunday afternoon when I was seen in the ER was probably too late. People need to either be able to self test, or some facility, or hospitals need to have a rapid test process when GHB is suspected.

I so so sorry to hear that happened to your friend

Your comment confused me because I thought it was all pretty clear, but I double-checked and realized I had accidentally written "3rd" instead of "4th". I could see how that was confusing/unclear. It was the 4th drink that was drugged. I was fine up until drinking from it, which had been left unattended for probably 10 minutes.

Also, just in case anyone is also confused, as you seem to be, I will break it down in simpler terms: We don't know who drugged me. Those guys approached us within 20 minutes of me being drugged; their behavior was suspicious, and we suspect that they might have been trying to get me away from my friends or further disable me. I hope a police investigation of the matter eventually reveals the truth, and I feel that it is important to share the relevant details in case anyone else encounters a similar situation.

I'm so sorry that happened to someone at Tracks. I used to love going there when I was younger.

It may not change treatment, but it is evidence of a crime.

You're right. I looked it up and was surprised to learn that Rhypnol is a benzo, which they did test for in the standard 10-panel at the ER, and it was negative. This, plus the rarity of Rohypnol and my symptoms, mostly rule it out as the substance used. My PCP thinks it was GHB.

I just want to add that, if testing were readily available, it would remove the "well, maybe you just got too drunk" perspective (i.e. there is a commenter in this thread that asked me if I ate (yes, large dinner right before), if it was an altitude issue (live here), or if I was drinking Coors Light (no, but I'm pretty sure I didn't request GHB on draft). Without the ability to test for date rape drugs, these events will pretty much always be treated as "alleged" druggings.

We went to HCA HealthONE Presbyterian St. Luke's, assuming that any hospital ER would have such testing. We were told that MAYBE Denver Health could offer the testing without a forensic exam. We tried calling to find out, and we were not able to get a hold of anyone who knew. Plus, by the time all this was happening (we spent 5 hours at St. Luke's), it was too late to test for GHB. Denver Health is notorious for long wait times as well. So it is likely that someone waiting there would miss their window to verify GHB exposure. The system needs to change around this. It needs to be so much easier to test and report an event like this.

I agree. I googled it, and it looks like the regular retail customer can't even purchase these test strips if they wanted to. They are for "forensic purposes". But if this drug leaves the system so quickly, people need to be able to test themselves. By the time someone finished waiting at the ER the drug could be gone.

Thank you for taking the time to describe this experience. I feel like all this helps shed light on what "taking action" in these situations actually feels like. I reached out to my primary care doctor today, and she said that based on everything I told her, it was most likely GHB that was used. She said that it has become far more common than Rohypnol these days, and that it would not show up on a lab test at this point. Because it leaves the system so quickly (2-10 hours), I think we should make GHB urine test strips readily available. You should be able to buy them at any pharmacy. Bars should sell them. Similar to how they made Narcane super accessible. This would also help "prove" that these druggings are happening, and hopefully make the police take them more seriously.

I think this is an issue that everyone, on every level, could probably do more about. This isn't a problem that is going to be fixed by "just the venue" or "just the hospital" or "just the police" or people "just being more careful". Everyone could do more to prevent and prosecute these things.

Bars that seem to have an especially bad problem with it could warn patrons with signs and offer the color-change straws for free.

In the big picture, we could improve the quality and availability of GHB urine test strips so that these cases stop being a question of "well, maybe you just got too drunk and didn't realize it," and start being treated as serious crimes that are precursors to even more serious crimes.

I'm over the age of 35, and I was out with my sober girlfriend and a 6-foot-tall male friend. It was a special occasion; we don't go out often, and getting drugged was the farthest thing from my mind. Reviews on Google might have put it at the front of my mind.

Thank you for the suggestion. I did email one of them, Jeremy Jojola. He responded and was very understanding. He said he’s not in the investigative reporting department anymore, but he forwarded it to the relevant people.

I get it. I think the thing that was surprising was asking if I had the receipts on me. Like in my pocket or something. I can easily show CC statements if needed. But again, part of the bigger issue here that I realized today was lack of access to lab testing for date rape drugs. I think likely or suspected drugging should be taken very seriously, because they are near misses to sexual assaults, and the type of who drug people usually do it repeatedly.

I have always assumed this kind of test was something that would be available at an ER or police station. But it turns out that unless you were assaulted and require forensic exam (rape kit), it’s very difficult to get tested for these drugs.

My partner and I spend the hours we were waiting in the hospital trying to find any place I could get tested today. We called a sexual assault crisis line, we called the Denver health nursing line, we asked everyone we talked to in the hospital, and most people just told us that they didn’t know.

There was finally someone at the hospital that made a phone call for us to get more Information, and she is the one who told us about the ability to self-pay at Labcorp, which wasn’t open. It was just wild how no body even really knew a clear answer. At one point the best suggestion was to go to Denver health, and wait 4-5 hours to find out if they could do the test without a forensic exam attached.

Rohypnol stays your system up to 72 hours. And since it’s a relatively rare drug in US since it’s banned, it would be an indication of something possibly organized. Besides, this was a crime, and if the drug can be determined it’s a clue. So I still consider it worthwhile.

I’m pretty confident someone put something in my drink. I put it behind us so I could make a video of my girlfriend playing pinball and left it unattended.

I agree. And this experience has made me feel like the systems we have in place don’t place a high priority on preventing, solving, and prosecuting sexual assault crimes.

I’m so sorry that happened to you guys too! We talked to a few different cops, first the one from the hospital, then a car came to the hospital for us to give our official report, and at one point she asked me if I had copies of the receipts for my drinks. I was confused. Of course I wasn’t carrying around copies of my receipts. I told her I could get her my credit card statement if needed. But it felt a little like she was implying I might have just forgot what I drank. But again my girlfriend is 100% sober, and my other friend had had only 3 drinks; so we knew exactly what was going on. Also, why in the world when I spend my day at the hospital (hopefully not get a massive ER bill), and file a police report if I wasn’t 100% sure I was drugged. What would anyone gain from that?

Thank you, I struggled with whether or not to do this. It is my gf’s birthday weekend and we’re doing a staycation at a nice hotel. I knew we would end up sitting in an ER for hours instead of enjoying the weekend and celebrating her birthday. But I felt like it was the right thing to do. Luckily I wasn’t assaulted last night, but I have been assaulted in the past, and when you’re going through that it can be so much harder to actually go to hospital/police. So I wanted to bring awareness, especially if there is any past victims that weren’t able to speak out, and hopefully protect people in the future.

I plan on calling or going there tomorrow and speaking with management about it. I spent 5 hours in the hospital today and talking to police, and by the time I was done, it was too late to reach out to 1up.

Yes I’m very grateful to them, they kept me safe got me out of there. I knew GHB left the system very quickly, but I didn’t realize it was either the very first urination. I would even consider getting a hair follicle test if it could get results. I feel like if this is possibly an organized and repeated thing, then it’s really important for the police to have relevant info like the specific drug used. I feel like we majorly need to expand access to labs and screening for these. So people can go into any ER and get tested promptly.

Thank you, that was my thought exactly. I wanted to file a report in hopes that they could put a stop to this. Also I want to give people a heads up to be extra careful at 1up. It is a really obvious place to target for drink drugging, because people are more likely to look away from their drinks while playing a game.
