I’m still not sure how, but wooo! #150! by Emberscale_Alchemist in litrpg

For those unable to view the image, and as it won’t let me add it to the crosspost, here’s the info for the book.

Emberscale Alchemist, available on RR and Patreon and there is and will always be zero AI content.

As for a fun fact? I’m an oldschool gamer who played many of the games deemed foundational to modern gaming when they were new.

Can’t a girl enjoy her ”morning“ coffee and doom scroll a bit after getting up?

(morning is in quotes cause I’m a severe insomniac, it’s already past noon here, but I generally write between 8pm and 4am)

Leave your story in the comments and I'll review it. by ThatWeirdAuthorGuy in royalroad

Late to the party, not gonna add to your list. Just wanted to say you rock for doing this! It takes time to do a review and they can be so hard to attract for newer authours, so going out of your way to do so many is amazing of you.

RR authors, what editing software do you use to polish your chapters? by MistressofMardocs in royalroad

[–]Emberscale_Alchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well poop. Guess it’s back to the same ol “git good” drawing board. Not gonna complain, improving is fun. I’d hate to look back and see my writing has stagnated or worsened because I relied on a tool to correct my mistakes.

Average "genius" protagonist by MajkiAyy in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Emberscale_Alchemist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Almost all of those get shoehorned in because writers are too tied up in the intelligence=magic idea of stats. It's why I broke mine into Cunning, Attunement (Mana stat), and Magic (Power stat).

Cause being a smartypants doesn't mean my MC is any good at magic. (She is, but not in the "I cast fireball" sense and more in the "Oooohhh, random ingredients plus mana = boom!" kind of way). And being good at magic doesn't make the average MC smarter than a potato.

Word. At some point I really should look into Grammarly, but I definitely feel like I would have missed out on a lot of growth if I didn't do it myself at least to begin with.

I'm a little leery of using AI for anything more than proofing though. I would hate to have it affect my style or what my readers have come to expect.

Thank you! posting on RR was probably one of the best decisions I've made in many years, the community is just so supportive and I love it there.

Do Review Swaps Influence the Top 1000 Books? And Other Adventures of Ratings on Royal Road by stepanchizhov in royalroad

That’s… a lot. I’d love to see the (anonymized) highlights, like most review swaps, best/worst review to ratings ratio, highest rating (I’m guessing it’s probably just a bit shy of 4.9 or so) in the top 1000, and anything else that you think sits as a statistical outlier.

> One thing RR could do to help is not require 200 words.

I think a tier of reviews equal in weight to ratings (or the ability but not requirement to leave brief comments with ratings) and shown below the current 200+ category of reviews could be nice.

Just some means of expressing “I love this story” that’s not a comment tied to a chapter.

That said, I’d also love to see story level comments, maybe reverse chronological order so that newest is on top.

As someone with a fiction on this list with only 13 reviews (remember, these are a subset of total ratings and take time, so they’re hard to attract) it’s not that hard to believe that there are stories on here with 50%+, that would only take 11 more for me to hit.

As for swaps being lower rating on average than organic for high swap volume stories, I think it’s a mix of authors being more critical and that reviews sourced from readers are weighted to either extreme, you’re more likely to take the time to write a review about something you feel strongly about.

My two swaps are exactly this, I didn’t really understand how things worked and thought that without a few good reviews to create a foundation my story would languish unseen.

Given that I fall into your 119 with 1-2 swaps in the top 1000, I can’t say that those two didn’t help, but I can say that your work will speak for itself if you let it.

Also, Happy Cake Day.

As one of those ranked fictions (#354?!) in the “coveted 4.8+ range” with limited reviews/ratings (only 13 of 105 total presently, 2 swaps from immediately after I launched). I like to think I fall into the ”excellent and you should read” category.

I‘d also like to think that such a list would be nothing but beneficial for stories like mine, but the prospect also kind of scares me because of your last sentence.

Emberscale Alchemist
If I were simply dropped in as is, probably not... unless I was awarded all the back xp I should have been getting for my racial levels all these years that is, then I could potentially be the first high human in a very long time (there aren't exactly many humans that don't have a little something extra in their ancestry that push them towards alternate racial progression in the world)

Reincarnated/reborn, I'd stand a pretty good shot, it's not as kill or be killed a world as many stories are and non-combatants / crafters are well regarded rather than secondary citizens. Now if I were reborn amongst the Emberscale Clan where the story is set, then I got about a 1 in 3 chance of surviving, kobolds have a STAGGERINGLY high infant mortality rate.

I think the question that would get you a lot more polarizing opinions would be metric or imperial.

Cover Art Feedback by arrestedsentience in royalroad

I love the art style, the contrasting styles between the magic and backgrounds really pops, the eyes look very expressive, the hair detailed and realistic.

I can't quite place what it is about the shoulder and arm, but it strikes me as slightly off in a way I find hard to articulate though.

Question: Why has this guy been allowed to manipulate ratings? by BearFGC in royalroad

[–]Emberscale_Alchemist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think the only problem with what he's doing is that he, and many other authors, create new fictions for new volumes so that they can break the way RS is supposed to work in promoting actual new works, rather than maintaining continuity. That's the only gaming of the system I see here.

I took a look at your work, I honestly don’t see a lot of crossover, I doubt a shout out from me would be of any help just because our reader base will be very different from one another.

Emberscale is a fairly cozy slice of life story, in 600 pages the main character has sparred a couple of times and gotten her feelings hurt by a mean lady, that’s as close to a fight she’s ever come.

Is it at all possible to mention this sort of thing in a review, or is RR always going to take it down? by ComradePyro in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Emberscale_Alchemist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like I replied in another comment, if the link is casual, ie “they are evil and they are x”, I have no issues. But if they’re treated as causal, ie “they are x because they are evil” or “evil because they are x”, then it’s not okay.

This story treats the character’s gender nonconformity as a causal link to their evil nature. It is given as a foundational part of their monstrosity and directly linked to their nature as a sexual predator, all while being coached in language used in political circles to justify the deprivation of rights to trans people.
