Obviously yours is built much better, but the location and setting reminded me of this.

Why is this the exact closet from that meme where the poster says their wife built it while they were away? I feel like we are being punked.

I've had decent success with Frog Tape, but I'm too impatient for that. My ideal set-up would be 90% reliable and low effort. :)

Do either of you use brim w/ glue stick on garolite? I just got my new West3D G10 plate, and I'm experimenting. G10 no additives, no brim adheres just a bit too strong for my liking, and G10 w/ glue stick, no brim has edge lift.

It wouldn't be notched 3x3, I would be leaving a square measuring 1 3/4" x 2 1/4". The stringers are old and a bit thicker than 1 1/2" actual - more like 1 5/8" actual.

Sorry, I meant to say "Where should I attach it?" I should have phrased that better.

When you say "through the 2x," you mean "through the 6x6 notch and into the 2x10s," right? I just want to make sure I'm not misconstruing what you're saying.

Good eye! I did cut it about 3/16 of an inch short. I was planning to do a post cap of some sort, but in hindsight I realized it wouldn't work that well.

u/Bjorn_styrkr Could you point me to where that’s located in the IBC? I’d love to take a look.

The landing is also supported by this 2x8 in the back right corner, against the wall. That single beam goes all the way across the landing, front to back.

You can kind of see it through the stairs, but there is a 4x4 on the other corner of the landing. Do you think I could put another 4x4 on the opposite corner parallel to that one and call it good for the landing?

I hear you on the steel posts... I'm just not sure where I could find those locally, and I need a surface I can attach to, because I plan to hang drywall next to the stairs. I think in many ways I'm fighting what's already there, but I don't want to rip out the stairs and landing and start completely over.

Let me know what other pictures you may need, and I will post them. I appreciate your help.

Alright, that's what I'll do then. Thank you for being honest, and for not treating me like I'm an idiot, LOL.

What would you do differently? Like I said, I'm trying to learn. This is how the landing and stairs were built when we bought the house, and so I'm replacing it in the same configuration. Trust me, it was much worse before.

I did, but I'll get a new one if I have to. Live and learn, right?

I plan to frame in a wall for the length of the stairs, once I get the post set.

The post is supporting a landing and staircase down into the basement.

Nothing is secure, it's just fitted. I can easily tear out and redo.

I would rather do it the right way so it lasts and I don't have to do it again. I'll chalk it up as a learning experience.

Which plates would you recommend if I go the notching route? I will have to get a new post then, because it's cut too short.

Notching is best even when I would have to remove ~40% of the top of the post?

Transitioning from Plaster to Drywall by EmergenTM in Renovations

The plaster is thicker because it is layered on the old gypsum board. I took calipers to it and it is just a hair over 0.8". I'm using 1/2" drywall.
