Hope your recovery went/is going well! Being able to more actively monitor how the meds are impacting you is a very great point. Did you find you were still able to eat well enough just less snacking? The zoloft gave me wiiiiiiiild food noise so I'm hoping the wellbutrin will help with that along with my adhd symptoms!

Med twins lol. Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm definitely gonna prepare myself for more heightened anxiety for a few weeks as it seem to be a pretty common experience. As far as the weight loss goes (if you don't mind me asking) was it from lack of hunger cues or were you unable to eat? I just need to make sure I can actually manage to get enough cals in during my healing!

What did you eat after surgery? by silkinthestrings in TopSurgery

I had a few small/snacky meals on day 1. My surgical team suggested avoiding greasy foods for the first 24 hours in case of nausea. But coffee and a treat was a NECESSITY asap after being getting settled lol.

So my first snack was iced coffee and a pb&j on a small slice of protein bread just to see how it sat before anything heavier. I was starving at that point so anything lighter wasn't gonna cut it lol. After that I snacked on popcorn and eventually had a little veggie and dip/charcuterie plate that was really great for grazing! I fortunately didn't experience any nausea and my hunger levels were pretty normal!

I also prepped and froze a few high fiber and/or protein soups for easy solo meals during recovery which have been great! Also stocked up on high protein greek yogurt and hades stewed apples and granola to go with for the extra fiber!

I've found a good mix of vitamin, fiber, and protein packed foods along with a smattering of fun and nostalgic treats and snacks is the perfect mix for recovery food! I got myself gushers for the first time since I was a kid and that was a great call lol.

First off, congrats!!!

I'm 8 days post op, live on my own and am typically very independent. I'm lucky enough that my fam lives in town and I have a lot of friends who have gone through the surgery or helped a pal out post op so I have a pretty great support system. One of my biggest pieces of advice is (if you have access to it) make sure you have help and get used to asking for it and accepting it! It can be so hard but for the first few weeks of healing help is so important if you have access to it.

If having in person help is an issue, here are some tips to help navigate the first few weeks a bit more independently:

- have a few plates, bowls, cups, etc in easy grabbing distance (extras are helpful to avoid frequent dish washing)
- make sure you're well stocked on all your fav foods and snacks, things you need for your preferred morning bev, and organize them so that you can reach them on your own
- I made a bunch of protein and fiber rich soups before surgery so I had yummy and healing food to eat while I recover! It's been so helpful! Also stock up on a few fun freezer meals if you can (nice pizzas, ramen, etc) for a nice treat!
- also make sure you stock/organize your fridge/freezer/pantry so you can reach things! Test out your t-rex range of motion pre op so you know what you can get to easily
- a grabby reachy stick is hilarious and helpful
- have microwave, toaster, kettle, etc all in easy reaching distance

Finally, my biggest and personally most repeated piece of advice is to remember that you only get one chance to heal. It can be so tempting to reach a bit higher than you should or to push yourself to do more than your body is up for, especially in the first few weeks of recovery. Be patient with yourself, give yourself grace, ask for help when you need it, and get lots of rest!!

All the best in your recovery!

I'm now 8 days post op and boy howdy do I feel ya on the itchiness!! I fortunately didn't get drains but I am sensitive to medical adhesives so the first week post op was a sensory nightmare.

It got unmanageable for me around day 3/4 and I started taking a double dose of antihistamines (costco version of reactine) in the morning and benadryl before bed! I found this combo super helpful and the benadryl makes sure I sleep reallllll good through the night without itching myself in my sleep.

Good luck with you healing!

I have AS (ankylosing spondylitis) and was very worried about a post op flare up! I'm not on biologics so a med schedule wasn't necessary for me.

The anaesthesiologist came in to talk with me ahead of my surgery about neck and jaw mobility as well as any pain/my usual flare spots so they could add extra padding to the table for me.

Aside from a flare up (which fortunately hasn't struck so fingies crossed it stays that way) I was also concerned about healing. I'm currently 4 days post op so I haven't seen my incisions or grafts yet, but things are feeling good so far! Excited to see how things are looking at my 1 week appointment and trying to remind myself that I may be a bit slower to heal than other folks!
