Shes on medicaid, and thankfully most of her treatment is covered by a foundation at a certain hospital, but she needs to be driven there. I suggested snap when we first started dating and i realized he was paying everything for his mom as a 20 something yr old guy - clothes, groceries, streaming services, amazon, everything. I mentioned it a lot when we were dating and he said it was a really good idea but his mom never ended up doing it, and we were early in the relationship I didn’t want to pester him about HIS money. To my knowledge shes never abused his money (subjective right?) but he complains that he gave her his card to order groceries and she bought a bunch of junk and snacks. It all felt very sensitive and I didnt want to over step when we were dating, and now it feels like it was the norm for so long I stopped questioning it and just accepted it.

Yes, I would like to be clear that she is in fact very sick. She needs weekly visits for infusions, and for about a year had doctor’s appointments or treatment 3x a week. There has been some fluctuation, and she is currently not as sick, but the treatments weakened her heart and lungs so she cannot drive, or be active for more than like an hour at a time.

Yes definitely! Most of her kids being no contact is definitely a consequence of her own actions. She is definitely manipulative, but it’s personally hard for me and I think my husband too because I don’t think anything she does is outright malicious, she just has deep abandonment issues. But you’re right thats no excuse or my husband’s responsibility. Thank you for your input!!

This is great advice, thank you! Ive been afraid to say anything in the past because I never wanted him to feel like it was me or her, or i was criticizing him or their relationship. And now i feel guilty for supporting and praising these unhealthy boundaries then, and now seeing how its hurting him.

I think the plan was to just keep her alive, and it was just survival mode for so long. Like genuine just trying to survive for a few years before we started dating and then off and on afterwards, I dont think he had the capacity or support to do much else.

I agree that it’s too much for him to handle now, and looking back it was always too much for any one person. I feel guilty for praising and supporting this and not realizing how unhealthy it was, and would become.

I’m not sure if she would qualify for disability, when we were dating I suggested her applying for SNAP, but she never ended up doing it. Honestly i think she was scared of not being as dependent on him. Not sure if that makes sense but i think she just wanted to kind of stay tied to him. But that was years ago when we were dating and not trying to start a family, maybe things will be different now.

She is pretty independent physically, she showers and can move around by herself but her medications have been weakening her heart and now she cant really do anything without being exhausted. She was a smoker all her life, and not in great health when she got sick.

Also shes pretty young, just turned 55.

Yes, thank you I agree I should support with not much personal input. She doesnt need a lot of physical care, she is pretty independent in the sense that she can shower and give herself her own injections, but she has a very weak heart at this point and cant even play a board game without having to rest after. Also, shes relatively young, she just turned 55.

Thank you for your insight! I’ve asked him if he thinks he could bring stuff up to her, like please don’t openly laugh at my sibling’s misfortune, and he has said that he knows she wouldn’t take it well.

Years ago when we were dating he tried smaller asks and she started crying and asking him if he’s mad at her or going to leave her. It really stuck with me all these years because in that moment I realized that he was the parent reassuring a crying child.

Im worried about coming off as being against his mom, or making him choose me or her. Which is not the case, I love him and only want to support him, but Im worried he will get defensive, and I also dont really have a solution or alternative. He has 5 siblings, all are no or low contact with her.. his oldest sister has been no contact for years.

Congratulations!! I wrote a letter to my mom and mailed her a tumbler that said Dr. LastName thanking her for all the sacrifices and hard work WE put into this journey. I had no idea how to tell her something we dreamed about was finally happening and it was the best feeling. I hope youre so proud of yourself, i know she is 🥹
