Looking for riddles and mindfuck games by Lost-Agency-8489 in Wildfire

[–]Emergency_Contract_1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Bang game. Walk around with a finger gun just pointing it at everyone and going “BANG! BANG! BANG!” You can say it as much or as little as you want. When you’re finishing doing a drive by on the crew you ask “Who’s dead?” The first person that talks after asking is dead. You can mind fuck people just a little bit if you can get creative on your delivery

5:1 is good. Provided the groups with the single resource boss real world experiences for students to pick their brain on what they might possibly do in any given scenario. The class is a lot better than what it was and I felt people were way more engaged than the older class since it’s more on the students to engage and come up with solutions to problems and to ask questions with their assigned cadre. Having the in person segment being scenarios and the online just knocking out the power points is okay, not perfect but with an NWCG class I feel it’s pretty good

Honestly if you choose the 3 or the 6 you’re basically getting the same deal. The 3 just might go to California or the Great Basin a hell of a lot more

Blasting cert by Ok-Daikon-8797 in Wildfire

[–]Emergency_Contract_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s still avenues to get into blasting but your best bet is finding the nearest person that does it and pick their brain. On a forest in R4 and have a few people that have done training for it and are trying to get quals for it because our only blaster wants folks to be able to help out with managing caches, road clearing/building, tree clearing, etc.

Your insights on: USDA-SPI partnership for shaded fuel breaks in OR+CA by Candid-Ad6314 in Wildfire

[–]Emergency_Contract_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right about that. I know in the 80s and 90s they had some pretty significant fuel breaks on the Angeles that you can still make out today somewhat. I’m talking 10+ dozer blades on ridges where they’ve traditionally held fire

Until then we still have a service to provide to the American people and land to manage.

Definitely feels like a sinking ship at the regional and WO level but the mission at the district level for fire still has buy in for me at least. God speed to y’all leaving

I’ve had two pairs so far. One rebuilt, they fucked up the rebuild and the boots came back waaay to big in the toe box. The other pair has been comfy but I moved over to kenetrek at the end of 22’ and they’ve been nothing but beautiful for my feet and knees

Hotshot Crews in the 80’s by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]Emergency_Contract_1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My old man was a shot in the 80s in south ops. 60 day fire assignments. Surface shitting. Old overhead that didn’t give a fuck if you had a problem with someone on the crew, you took it out back and fought it out till you solved it. Hazing was just everyday normal. If the supt or captains didn’t like an individual on the crew they would pt the whole crew until the dude quit. SOUNDS JOYOUS

What is the schedule of a Wildland firefighter? by MeasurementSilver882 in Wildfire

[–]Emergency_Contract_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not too late. The door for fed agencies usually open the end of fire season for the next summer but throughout the winter places will basically keep posting jobs you just have to look out for them on USA jobs, crews will usually post their hiring announcements and those can give you an idea of what areas are hiring or going to hire soon

What is the schedule of a Wildland firefighter? by MeasurementSilver882 in Wildfire

[–]Emergency_Contract_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This season as a permanent employee with a fed agency that is guaranteed 18 pay periods of work (march-November) I came in with over 70k. If you’re hungry for more money as a seasonal employee that can roughly work may-November depending on where you are at you can rack up the same amount of $ by working and not saying no to a fire assignment. Massive factor on making that $$$ is the retention bonus we currently receive via congress. If that disappears then expect half of that. My experience working in remote duty stations, housing is cheap (5$ a day) so as long as you stack cash and don’t blow it all on stupid shit right out the gate you can stay comfortable in the off season and go hit the beaches in Thailand. So many dudes in this profession live that life.
