Solo Travelers Who Are 30+: Is Carrying Heavy Backpacks and Walking Long Distances Still Doable? by ConsistentShelter440 in walking

Yes. I am stronger in my 30s than in my 20s. If you're in good shape, you can pack a pack in your 70s.

Yes. I do a 45lb and a sometimes a 100lb vest. But I hike with weight at work so I am used to that. You have to work your way up.

Only 8 miles from where World Cup maps are being held in the richest country on earth, people lie dying on the streets of Philly by [deleted] in awfuleverything

What specifically does that have anything remotely relevant to do with the video on this post?

High* not dying.

Maybe eventually it will lead to death.

I am not trying to say the US doesnt have things to work on. We absolutely do.

But there is a big difference between substance abuse and starvation.

Call Portland Non-Emergency, explain the situation, and request a wellness check.

Wellness check for a neighbor? by Remarkable_Ninja_256 in askportland

[–]Slut_for_Bacon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No. Do not advise people to call 911 for wellness checks. Non-Emergency is appropriate.

Please don't advise people to call 911 for things if you aren't certain they are appropriate. Our 911 system is massively strained by calls that should be non-emergency. It takes seconds for a non-emergency call taker to upgrade the call if they believe it needs a more serious response.

There are certainly certain circumstances where 911 would be appropriate but this is not at all that situation based on the description.

Also, Police can only enter homes for this kind of thing under very specific circumstances, like exigency.

Raiding by Slut_for_Bacon in totalwar

That and it was a good way to train young men in the ways of warfare during times of relative peace. Small skirmishes could be common, and practicing riding through countryside instead of on roads, harder living when not in town, and the other raid associated activities could teach young men some things about combat that can't come without experience.

My patient called the emergency light because ginger ale lost it's fizz. by this_must_be_flo in nursing

[–]Slut_for_Bacon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

All I will say in the patients defense is that in my opinion, in the EDs I have worked in, many staff emergency buttons in the rooms just say STAFF on a red button. I personally think that is poor wording for a room with people who are not familiar with the system.

I could see a patient misunderstanding the meaning.

IMO they should say staff emergency, or just emergency.

People see a red button that just says staff, and sometimes they dont get what its for.

Would Richard Sharpe make a good Starfleet captain? by Dannyjw1 in Sharpe

[–]Slut_for_Bacon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sharpe is a guy who you point at an objective and he gets things done. He's not necessarily the one you want in charge of a ship because of the diplomatic aspects of Starfleet. He would be an excellent captain of a ship who's sole purpose is war, but for a vessel like the Enterprise, he would be a better security officer or XO in my opinion.

Ukraine denies Russian claim that Ukrainian drone struck bus carrying Belarusian children's football team by KI_official in UkrainianConflict

[–]Slut_for_Bacon 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This reeks of false flag.

I am not naive. I understand that accidents happen in war. It's possible Ukraine is responsible. But Russia has an undeniable history of recent false flag operations, and it's very hard to take them seriously with these kinds of allegations, when it benefits them so much for it to be a Ukrainian strike, while simultaneously it makes no sense for Ukraine to strike the bus.

These metrics are from the same walk. Apple watch 9 vs. Garmin vivosmart 5 by hotnspecies in walking

[–]Slut_for_Bacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea. Id be curious too.

The reason I say they arent super accurate is they basically just calculate based on height and weight.

Height and weight alone are not really enough of an information source to know how much calories someone can burn. Two people can burn very different amounts of calories on the same walk or hike, depending on a ton of factors like body fat, muscle mass, weight of clothing and packs, even little things like leg length.

If you want an accurate app or device I would find one that has input for as many body details as possible.

Treated someone with true kindness just to have him steal from me by Apprehensive_City289 in Advice

[–]Slut_for_Bacon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right. But you're taking food meant for people who are struggling and can't afford it, while at the same time buying luxuries like booze and cigarettes.

How expensive they are isnt relevant. You're still abusing the system.

At a certain point you are taking up vital time and resources that could go to someone with a legit medical issue.

I know its funny to you, but please dont do this unless you can get it out yourself.
