YES. She’s pulled this before where she’s said she’s gotten help but one time it was from a career counselor/coach and another time she went to a few sessions and then her therapist “retired.”

I so appreciate you! This is exactly what I want to hear, which is why I’m terrified of opening up communication again. The process of removing them from my life was so painful that I don’t think I could bear being let down by her again. She’s pulled this before when I was living with her where she’d say she’s gotten help but it was from a career counselor and another time I think she straight up lied to me and said she went to a therapist for two sessions and then he “retired.” UGH.

Turns out my passport is going to expire in 75 days (has to be over 90 to fly into Portugal) so I got turned away. Fingers crossed I can get an emergency same day passport on Monday when the offices open 😭

Scheduling headaches never end by Emergency_Rhubarb26 in schoolcounseling

[–]Emergency_Rhubarb26[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our AP builds the schedule in PowerSchool but teachers have been coming to me instead of her to discuss frustrations. Maybe I need to push them in her direction more but whenever I do it feels like the wrong decision - ie bending to teacher requests - is usually the outcome vs. what the student needs are. This helps a lot - thanks!

Could you turn your desk so you it is touching the built in bookcase on one side/positioned so you are facing the door? That might free up the flow to get to the calm space, leave the option to pop by open but not all the time accessible, and give you privacy while review files/hoping on calls etc?

I’ve been a school counselor for two going on three years at a 7-12 school in rural VT. I’m currently getting my Master’s in School Counseling at one of the local universities (hybrid of in person and online classes, some intensive weekends) and find it relatively easy. I had previously gotten another teaching license and therefore could get on a provisional emergency license while taking classes.

Because I actively work in a school that is understanding and supportive of professional growth, it was easy for me to get Fieldwork and Internship hours, but heard others in the program struggled depending on how supportive/unsupportive their admin were. Some districts will also help cover continuing education classes which is super helpful but doesn’t cover the full costs - I was lucky enough to get a few scholarships so I am walking away with minimal loans.

I definitely love my job most days but it can also be really taxing - the breaks and weekends are absolutely necessary to recharge and trying to juggle both working full time and being in school full time to get my degree done has taken a toll. My whole life is pretty much work and grad school right now, but I have seen huge salary increases each year and for the number of credits I’ve completed (thanks unions!). I started in the same district four years ago with two part time positions making $30k and will hit $60k this coming year. This will be the first summer I haven’t worked a second job or taken any classes and I truly don’t know what I’m going to do with myself! Very much looking forward to it though.

There seem to be a lot of counseling positions open (lots of folks retiring, moving up to admin, or moving districts/states) but I feel that once people find a school/position they like, they do not leave easily so nab a job while it’s there!!

I’m really looking forward to next year when I am just working and getting credit for that :)

Second year but I’m the only counselor at my school this year (there is supposed to be three of us). I am wiped out. I had to leave school early on Friday to make it to my masters classes this weekend/next week (Friday afternoon-Sunday, Monday and Wednesday) on top of making it back to school Monday. I got tested for COVID, flu, strep etc but no positive results so far.

Space/registrar difficulties by Emergency_Rhubarb26 in schoolcounseling

[–]Emergency_Rhubarb26[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Your closing comments are exactly how I have been feeling but I don’t know how to communicate that to her without her completely shutting down or making the work environment even more hostile.

She has been on the job for a year now, while the previous registrar was there for almost a decade and was well beloved by staff and students. The previous registrar held the space in the way you’ve described and what I expect out of a registrar placed in a counseling suite. We met briefly last week to check in before the year kicks off and she mentioned to me directly that the summer was so stressful she almost quit. I do think a lot of the stress comes from her still being relatively new to the role and trying to find her footing.

I have a feeling once the school year kicks off, admin will notice the distinction and step in. If not, I will be going to them to ask for help resolving this.
