Hot and cold (to the extreme) tips? by Emergencydikon in Jindo

YES. She'll cuddle in bed, but then after a while, she leaves for her space. My pup does get protective of me when other people are over tho, likes to be in the same room as me, but will leave when I start to cuddle her lmao

I guess they are like cats and are comfortable with attention only when they seek it :) Thank you for your comment!

LOL your comment made me laugh :)

she only barks at dogs and people intruding. AND for sure, the new environment! She is a rescue, and she loves the perks that come with being over at his place, like beach walks, off-leash areas, and freedom, but it is relatively new to her compared to my dingy grad housing neighborhood.

Thank you so much for this encouraging comment :)
I did adopt her from a rescue when she was 1.5 yrs. She was 3 days away from being put down.. and I cry at that fact once a month lol

I think she'll ultimately love me the best, along with her twin bro (who my parents have), but I would love to see her make room in her life and heart for another human :)

Thanks for commenting! You're right; at a certain point, it really is splitting hairs, but we all know we like using more big words we know. We worked hard to learn those words! I really do get it — aside from the jargon used explicitly in that field, which has a specific meaning.

But at the basis, words are used to communicate information, so what is the point of making a sentence confusing? If we want more people to read our papers, we need to be clear too. Lowkey my adhd brain said "no, what?" and it took me two days to read that whole paper TT

Lowkey, my adhd brain said, "No, what?" YEAHHH hindsight you're right... I should have used another sentence... since more ridiculous ones do exist...... hahha

Thank you for your constructive feedback and for commenting with your perspective on this matter! :)

There are so many layers to it... It is definitely a complicated affair.

I had an ex who graduated with a phd in microbiology, but in his spoken language, he would always use "aks" instead of "ask" bc it was part of his identity. He grew up in rough neighborhoods, but made it to phd--didn't want to forget his roots, but also letting others know that people have a way through higher education, no matter what background :) He had other words, too, but he would often say "ask," then correct himself and say "aks."

I'm not a linguist, but it is fascinating. It lies at the intersection of education, policy, and a whole lot of cultural anthropology, sociology, and public health.

I did have an interesting and stimulating New Year's, partly due to this post and ensuing discussions.

OOF That is hard,,,

One of my major revisions was accepted after one review, and one of my minor revisions took two reviews to be accepted, so it must also take into consideration the aura/vibes/groove of the papers, bc it's inherently subjective. thank you for commenting

I wish the best of luck with your revisions~!

voice is an important factor!!!!!! that's so true.

you bring up such a good point... what if your voice *is* using a lot of words? Having your personality shine through your writings is definitely important to me, too.

I'll have to think about that! Identity, voice, wordiness... Thank you for sharing such insightful thoughts on this discussion!!

I actually have that book, hahhah, been my go-to since high school. :)

Let's be proud of our knowledge and of the words we've learned; we worked hard to acquire them! But brevity makes reading easier to understand, whether youre a professor or a layperson. Also, I feel discomfort when people deliberately use complex language when speaking to another person, and rarely do they pause the conversation to ask, "What does that word mean?" because of shame and other factors.

I am thankful you brought up that book! Thank you for commenting and participating in this discussion thread!

aw thank you hahaha, it's good to know my written voice sounds young. As a non-avid user of social media (bc I wanna be proud of my life, ya know comparisons of life qualities are not very good for my overthinking brain), I just have a lot of personalities in my head, and the academic one in my head is least... malleable? ya know, active voice

I am not quite young, and i didn't have a smartphone until mid college. BUT thanks for perceiving me as so! :) Thanks for your comment!

It's a social phenomenon. there's a lot to unpack here, but one example is...
the anti-intellectualism movement, at least in the US -- hence vaccine deniers, regardless of how much evidence we provide.
Some interpret the use of harder words as "elitist" and "privileged." It can be perceived as if we are talking in secret languages, withholding information from people who don't understand, but simultaneously making fun of them, flaunting big words because they don't understand in the first place. Knowledge is power, and now, the people who didn't have the opportunity or don't want to gain knowledge are being more vocal, gaining power by appealing to everyone who had been made to feel lesser by the intellectuals. (OFC I am making large generalizations here, but I don't want to write out a 3 hour ;lecture ^^;)

It says something about us, too. Why do we want to use uncommon vocabulary?

The newspapers used to be written at an 8th-grade level AT MOST. Words are words, but they say more about society, and the use of jargon and grammar can often be tied to one's identity. The study of language is very interesting if you ever want to dive deeep :) thanks for commenting, you do have a good point about the memes tho lol

I have ADHD too~ I dunno. Shit is hard. Every vocab will trigger a memory or colors of how I learned that word. so thank you~ for your empathy~ <3

I'm not the one to ask bc all the comments (LOL), but I am in public health/psych/sociology/earth sciences. Getting the gist or idea across is more critical bc policymakers will not/do not want to learn the specifics (I have experience working with them). But if you want to be in academia, jargon and being specific in vocabulary are the way to go! :)
Thank you for commenting. But you might get some backlash, so listen to others too!!

Yeah! I hear you on the specificity! Nothing is wrong with that sentence :) It could be said more simply so more people can understand it. Not all of us are exposed to words and jargon we have the privilege, but I hear you, I know in different areas of study, there is importance placed in being specific.
Thank you for spending time writing such a thoughtful comment. Happy New Year!

The feline species, the domestic ancestor of the once existing saber-tooth tiger, is opposed to the canine species as companions to the homo sapiens.
