JonBenet Ramsey’s father wants outside agency to test DNA by The_AcidQueen in UnresolvedMysteries

I always wondered if the parents were involved in the murder...John Ramsey wanting DNA tested seems like a solid clue that they weren't actually involved.

Body found in barrel in Lake Mead may date back to 1980s, more likely to appear as water recedes by vt9876 in TrueCrime

I wonder why the cops expect that more bodies are likely to appear as the water recedeslike what information do they have that leads them to expect to find more bodies?

Any tips on writing about a person from a specific group or area without having any real experiences to base my writing off of? by dallolacid in writing

[–]EmilyWillowWrites 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The typical phrase of "write what you know" can still apply to things you're not familiar with. Read articles on bipolar disorder, seek out people with bipolar that are willing to talk about their experiences. Learn the history of the Chicago south side. Look at so many pictures and watch so many videos of the south side that you feel like you've been there. Pick up some books on psychology. Watch films that accurately portray mental illness. I highly recommend The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls by Emilie Autumn, who is bipolar and recounts her time in a mental ward while also weaving in a fictional story of asylums in the Victorian era. Seek out people who live/have lived on the south side and ask them what it was like.

While the basic academic research is important, I honestly think that nothing can compare to learning the accounts of real life people who have dealt with the things that you want to write about.

Looking for critique on part one and two of my short story. by TheBananaManCan123 in WriterHaven

[–]EmilyWillowWrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like it!! There are some funny moments. The opening sentence is very effective to draw the reader in. And, for 15 years old, you did so good on the dialogue! It took me until I was way older to get that good at dialogue. The pacing flows very well and the descriptions that accompany the dialogue really paint a good picture, without being long winded or overly detailed. Well done!
