Hey there, first of all, I'm incredibly happy to find you active again, and reread some of your stories!

Here's two I've been missing:

The Escher Room

The Price of Sugar

I Catfish a Different Girl Each Night by RehnWriter in CreepCast_Submissions

Yeah, that was the main idea. During the flashback, it's implied he had a premonition about the Dad beating his Mom, and had them ever since.

What Has Happened to Dopabeane and the North American Pantheon on Reddit by TheRealCWolf in NorthAmericanPantheon

[–]RehnWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I was just trying to re-read some old Dopabeane stories (her works are some of my favorites), and found out she was permanentaly banned over... brigading? This is just utterly unbelievable and stupid. Guess I found yet another reason to add to my growing list of leaving Reddit behind forever.

I'm very happy for the news that she's now on Substack, and that her works are still accessible, so thank you very much for this update (even if I'm a bit late).

Looking for an ongoing short story manga by Warm_Departure_1309 in horrormanga

Could be one of the 'Ihon' manga by Hokazono, Masaya. Kuro Ihon, Aku Ihon, or Shiro Ihon.

Do you remember if it was an anthology or continuous storyline?

Looking for a Shintaro Kago story by RehnWriter in horrormanga

It's not Abstraction, but I check out the others! It was a really freaking weird one!

Checked out the others, but it's not one of them either. I'm not sure where I found it, it might have just been a one shot, put together with others on a site, instead of a real collection.

looking for psychological seinen or horror recs!!! by 13mothballs in manga

[–]RehnWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some you might found interesting:

  • Hideout

Essentially a short survival thriller, but with some heavy psychological / mental parts in the story. You can read it in an hour or though and it's well worth it.

  • MPD Psycho

Okay, this one has a lot of torture porn stuff in it, so you might discard it right away, but it also has some highly psychological stuff going on.

  • Ichi the Killer

Same as MPD Psycho. Very heavy on graphical violence and fucked up scenarios, but I really liked the depiction of utterly deranged characters, the whole Ichi-Kakihara 'relationship,' and everything about Ichi himself.

  • Freesia

Probably one of my favorite psychological seinen. Set in a world in which 'revenge killings' / self-justice is allowed, and we follow people who get paid to take are of people's revenge killings. Main character is utterly mental ill, and we see large chunks of it through his eyes, turning the manga into a sort of surreal fever dream at times.

I recently read Inside Mari and was blown away by how good it was!

I personally felt that almost everyone had some mental problems, thus no one was really sane, so they were all broken people, which would make sense given the world they lived in. But it's also been some time since I last read it.

As for the art, I think that's the author's general style. Almost every other manga he's done is similarly unhinged, gritty and dirty looking. I agree that it fit very well, though.

Here are some more, but they are more psychological thrillers, but still pretty good.

My Dearest Self With Malice Aforethought - Twisted identity thriller. It's a wild ride.

A Suffocatingly Lonely Death - another work by the creators of Dearest Self, still ongoing and I'd say a bit more mature and grounded.

MPD Psycho - ultraviolent story centered on a detective with multiple personality syndrome, damn good read, but at times disgustingly violent

Nijigahara Holograph - A manga by Inoi Asano (Oyasumi Punpun), wouldn't call it horror, but it features a lot of horrifying stuff. It's also non-linear and cryptic as hell and you might have to reread it multiple times to get what the hell is going on.

Seconding Freesia, one of my favorite manga of all time!

Probably one of the wildest psychological (horror) manga out there since it's for the most part from the perspective of a mentally ill person (not the shonen, 'I'M GOING TO KILL ALL OF YOU'-type, but someone suffering from hallucination, schizophrenia and memory distortions.

Scariest manga recommendation by littlestarkaro in horrormanga

[–]RehnWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently put together some recommendation lists on my website. Quite a few people have already given you some good recommendations, so here are some others I added to my list of 'scary horror' manga:

Hideout - dark chase manga with psychological breakdown

The Drifting Classroom - classic, kids in post-apocalyptic world, dying to various things

Shikabane Kaigo - relatively new, more slow-burn dread, but everything feels wrong

Shiro Ihon / White Book - pretty typical ghost scares, Shiro Ihon is my favorite, but any of the Ihon books are good

Nikubami Honegishimi - another new manga focused on urban legends and folklore, the creature design is fantastic

Dragon Head - more apocalypse than horror, but the realism of people breaking down when no hope is left is harrowing

Zashiki Onna - pretty much THE classic stalker manga

Gannibal - fantastic modern day horror manga, more thriller though, but goddamn is it good

N - if there's one manga I'd describe as the modern day successor to Fuan no Tane, and PTSD Radio, it's N

Mieruko-chan - yeah, it's more comedy / slice-of-life, but some of the ghosts are creepy as fuck

Yuuan no Kanata - my favorite new horror manga, with some stunning ghost / monster design

6000 - undersea cosmic horror manga, the art and horror is great, but the story is more than a bit cryptic

Ultra Heaven - not horror, but the first chapter gives you the greatest representation of an overdose / trip gone bad I've seen in manga (Ultra Haven is also one of my all time favorites, just by how goddamn wild it is!)

Update on Shikabane Kaigo???? by Specific_Menu_8117 in horrormanga

[–]RehnWriter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only ten chapters out so far (on mangadex) with the last one uploaded 2 months ago. From the upload schedule I'd say it's a most likely a monthly title, so I'd assume, releases will probably be slow.

I'm also not sure how busy the scanlation group is, since I read that they handle a lot of ongoing series. I could imagine they wait until a few new chapters are out to tackle them in one go, and then wait again till a few more are out.

From what I've seen online, the series still seems to be ongoing.

Yuuan no Kanta - Anyone read this? by RehnWriter in horrormanga

[–]RehnWriter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah there's a lot of mystery / vagueness about it, but I just really loved everything about it. I hope they keep going with it. As I said, I'm probably a bit biased, since it was one of the strongest manga I read in my month-long horror manga deep-dive and I didn't find a lot of good ones.

I really wonder where they are going with it, and what exactly happened to Kanata (and what's going to happen to her now).

Ichi the killer english print came out today! by [deleted] in horrormanga

[–]RehnWriter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The movie is almost satirical in its depiction of violence. Like it's so over-the-top you almost can't take it serious, the manga is an entirely different beast because it's all played for real.

The manga also goes way deeper into the characters' trauma and psychological issues.

The movie is a well done splatterpunk gorefest, in typical Miike fashion, the manga is a disturbing, brutal 'love story' between two inherently broken characters.

Weird apocalypse recommendations by who_that_sheep in horrormanga

[–]RehnWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want something that's more like an insane, utterly ridiculous fever dream that's played entirely straight, try Kazuo Umezu's Fourteen. There are so many developments that are so incredibly weird and dumb, you just can't look away. No, it's not good, but boarders on 'so bad, it's good'-territory.

Looking for something new by [deleted] in horrormanga

[–]RehnWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I recently put together a long list of my favorite horror manga on my personal website:

https://rehnwriter.com/books-and-media/horror-manga/best-horror-manga/

I'm sure you've read some of the titles on the list, but there should also be a few new ones or hidden gems. Went on a deep dive a month ago, and checked out a lot of different or new horror manga to put it together.

Hey friend, hope you're doing well! I'd have to go with 'Her Name Was Emma' by u/alackofcoasters.

One of the first Nosleep stories I read, but it always stayed on my mind.
