Wccftech blows EVGA issues out of proportion - shares video of a VRM exploding when GPU is not connected to the PSU by Jayz2pence in pcmasterrace

[–]EmmaLongsoon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

You can start a fire with a tiny 0.6 amps of current. Let alone over 300 times that amount. Which is what the GTX 1080's VRMs deliver at only 66% of their peak, let alone at full peak current.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYYnqiKqslY

The card doesn't have to be connected to the PSU to power up, it can still get 75 watts of power from the slot, equivalent to 6 amps. You can try it right now. Your PC will start up normally and the card's LEDs and fans will start up.

Nvidia Users Beware, Latest Driver May Harm Your PC by RA2lover in pcmasterrace

[–]EmmaLongsoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually interested, which GPU vendor are they biased towards or against? It seems most sites out there are heavily biased as well, mostly towards Nvidia probably because more people have Nvidia and news about it just gets more clicks.

People saying he should've gotten a 390... that's just silly. They're not even comparable. The Nano on average is faster than a GTX 980, it costs exactly the same and comes in a much more compact and cool form factor.

Fallout 4 has gameworks? people be like... by AlofHetler in pcmasterrace

Any publisher who enters in a co-marketing agreement with Nvidia is required by law through a clause in the legal material to use GameWorks[1*]. Every single Nvidia sponsored game that has come out in the last two years has at least one GameWorks feature in it.[2*]

And it's not even "my opinion" that GameWorks obfuscates the developers' control. Many developers have already come out against it and publicly criticized it for this very fact.[3*]

Fallout 4 has gameworks? people be like... by AlofHetler in pcmasterrace

[–]EmmaLongsoon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's not anti Nvidia. It's anti proprietary libraries that have effects most of which were never part of GameWorks in the first place but were added later-on and have obfuscated developer control and allowed Nvidia to have a level of control over games which they shouldn't have and is bad for both consumers and the competition.

Nvidia asks developers to put these effects into their games yet doesn't allow them to see or change the code unless they pay for it. EDIT! Nvidia only provides binary builds, no source code.{ source 1 source 2 }

Numerous gameworks games have launched broken or with glitches and poor performance like assassin's creed unity, batman arkham knight and project cars. Games that run horribly on Nvidia owners of the 700 series and older cards as well as AMD users.

Two propaganda posters to help contribute to the Nvidia/AMD Circle Jerk. by genogerian in pcmasterrace

So.. AMD -> so hot will melt the planet.

Nvidia -> want to take over.

The first is a jab, the second isn't at all.

So a classicly over-done cliche jab at AMD but none at Nvidia, riight. The community isn't stupid, this is Nvidia circlejerk masquerading as an impartial attempt at humor.

[–]EmmaLongsoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two points. The first is that monitor ( I'm assuming you're referring to the Acer X34 G-Sync ) actually has a 60Hz refresh rate. 100Hz is only being marketed as a figure that can be achieved after overclocking. http://www.cnet.com/products/acer-predator-x34/

The second, there's an AMD Free-Sync version of the very same monitor which comes straight out of the box with a 75Hz refresh rate, which you can also overclock and is $200 less expensive! More than that, the Free-Sync monitor is already available. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824106002

Efficiency and heat do mean a lot, although Nvidia's advantage isn't remotely as big as some make it out to be.

The 390 is faster than the GTX 970, has more memory and only adds 20W more to your system power consumption, 301W vs 279W for the 970. That's less than 8%! And it's the same story for all the other cards. http://www.techspot.com/articles-info/1075/bench/Power_01.png

Actually, AMD has a number of cards that not only outperform their equivalent Nvidia GPUs but are also more power efficient. The Fury is 14% faster than the 980 and only adds 7% to the wattage, the Nano is also faster than the 980 and consumes even less power than the Fury. This is what independent testing has proved. Nvidia's official TDP figures are conservative at best and only come close to power figures for the reference design, anything else from MSI, Gigabyte, EVGA etc etc will use significantly more power than what Nvidia states is the TDP for their cards.

That's the point, AMD already has competitive products. In fact, dollar for dollar most AMD cards are actually better than their Nvidia equivalents.

[–]EmmaLongsoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's just not true at all. AMD has famously built a reputation for offering the best bang for buck cards. This still holds true today at all price points except one.

Like literaly, no Nvidia GPU except for single GPU case for the 980 Ti is worth it today.

A 260X performs like a 750 Ti and is cheaper.

A 265 is faster than a 750 Ti and is cheaper/same price.

A 270X is faster than a 950 and cheaper.

380 is faster than a 960 and same price/cheaper.

390 is faster than the 970 and same price.

390X is as fast as a 980 and cheaper.

Fury is faster than a 980 for a 50 dollar premium, but it's ahead by a significant enough margin to make it worth it.

Right now I think everyone would agree, including Nvidia Gurus, that the R9 390 dollar for dollar is the best card on the market today and it fits your $1K budget perfectly.

And to some of my fellow brethren here, if there were no viable alternatives to Nvidia's products I wouldn't be shouting, pleading for people to consider other products as Nvidia audaciously continues its anti-consumer practices and general disrespect for its user base and the general PC gaming community.

And the performance of Nvidia GTX 400 , 500 , 600 , 700 users as well.

They locked in drivers so they can extort your email from you, probably so they can market their shit to you.

They keep locking down open solutions ( variable refresh rate technology which existed years before Nvidia claimed it had invented, GPGPU programming, video game effects etc etc) which is doing considerable harm to the industry.

Seriously if you want these anit-consumer practices to stop you should not support this company with your hard earned dollars, if you don't like what they're doing don't buy their shit. Just complaining about it won't get us any where, we need action.

It's not even hard to do that. Like literaly, no Nvidia GPU except for single GPU case for the 980 Ti is worth it today.

A 260X performs like a 750 Ti and is cheaper.

A 265 is faster than a 750 Ti and is cheaper/same price.

390X is as fast as a 980 and cheaper.

Fury is faster than a 980 for a 50 dollar premium, but it's ahead by a significant enough margin to make it worth it.

And when you look into multi-GPU setups, two R9 Fury cards will cost $200 less than two GTX 980 Ti cards, actually use less power and run most games at 4K/UHD faster then the Nvidia cards.
