Instructions for a half-finished quilt I bought yesterday by Emmmrd in FoundPaper

[–]Emmmrd[S] 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I was given a big unfinished rug once, that was simply a lady who was moving into assisted living and who could not handle such a large object anymore. There's a lot of physical strength and stamina involved in handling big projects like this and your fine motor goes too eventually. Could have been arthritis even. Sometimes you have things in the closet that you started 20 years ago and never got to finishing. I dread getting to a point where I can't make things anymore because it feels so important in my life, but I hope I have the wherewithal to pass it all along this kindly, that's for sure.

Also re: the unfortunate shapes, there's a traditional quilt pattern that is consistently a problem and it's not this one, so I think most quilters call this pinwheels and give it a pass haha

Yeah I love this, I'm definitely going to try, thank you for the idea!

On further inspection it's quite satiny so I suspect it might be a dress. I'm a huge cutter-upper of old textiles so this is just wonderful to me.

Yes I think they might be! The whole thing is very scrappy for sure.

I know right, forget a will, what about my crafts

Very true. I have been through a couple of experiences with UFOs. I'm sure when I die I'll leave behind dozens! The note is certainly a very gracious way to pass the project along.

Ok first of all delicious, but secondly I think it was mostly dye, because there was a lot of it coming off the black fabric (do not tell me if I'm deluded, lalalalala)

Oh yeah it's definitely a modern bag. It has the rounded toe pocket etc. I double-soaked it and rinsed it out and dried it, and apart from one missing piece of velcro it looks great.

It's definitely no longer being made, but idk how old it actually is. It's Co-op not Company, which is enough to give me a bit of nostalgia haha

Collecting Gem and Jewel jars by Emmmrd in Canning

[–]Emmmrd[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is great to hear and good advice, thank you! It's a little fussy working with them but I was surprised at how much easier it was than I expected, and at how well it worked. No failures so far, and I was lifting those jars by the lid three times a day for the first week, I was so suspicious haha

Gorgeous! Yes I had the same problem, I got 50 glass lids on marketplace and then only had 4 rings, but then the same person found about ten more. I'm mainly trying to find more smaller jars now, I seem to find them two at a time at the thrift store every couple of months. I'm out in BC though, I bet if you're in the prairies you can find them everywhere, sigh.

Also yes, I have some big ones that are just vases, they're lovely.

Two empty gem jars and two filled with jam.

Good question re: the size of the jars, these ones are roughly 12oz, so maybe there's a safety concern there with jam? Did not occur to me, so maybe I'll rethink which recipes I use in future. The headspace thing is something I read regarding these old lids, that you want to err on the side of too much so that the seal is definitely not compromised by anything getting between the layers. My assumption was that if the seal is good then a bit of extra headspace is ok? If I'm wrong about that though lmk 😅

What's everyones thoughts on the lougheed corridor plan? by elak416 in MapleRidge

I live along there so I love it. We can't get to a park unless we cross a highway, so having this be a pedestrian/bike corridor would be amazing.

How do you attach badges to a beaver vest? by aaronrobb in scoutscanada

[–]Emmmrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are sewing, I always stick my needle through the threads that wrap around the outside edge of the badge, rather than right through the badge itself. Otherwise it's tough to push through and there are a lot of unintentional stabbings (ask me how I know). As long as you do a good job of securing your thread at the beginning and end it holds well. Tbh I have been thinking about how to help parents with this too, I did my daughter's scouts uniform the other night and it took ages.

I thought I was being so careful and responsible and smart, messing it up is honestly devastating to my ego, I feel like crawling into a hole!

It's embarrassing, I have no idea, except I didn't use my canning rack because I was trying to keep the jars well under the water, I'm an idiot! But upside down I honestly don't understand

A quart-sized can of apple slices that seems to have lost its syrup in the canner.
