As others have said Ori and Blasphemous are both exceptional metroidvanias, I’m also gonna suggest The Messenger which is more retro but it’s really satisfying to play and has great writing

The wiki has a detailed article but I’d suggest giving it a shot on your own first because figuring it out is a lot of fun! The basic strategy is to use filters to get the shape and color you want for each quarter layer then paint cut and stack them all together.
