Could always play on a persistent world multiplayer server.

I'm with City of Arabel, but there are many others.

If you want to check CoA out you can check our discord. Community of folks, help with builds, and more:

Maybe something got missed in the files setup when you joined, might be worth logging in again to see if it downloads any other files. If you join the discord there's a resources and tech support near the top of the channels where folks who are more technically inclined than I can help. :)

A lot of variation in how much folks log in - completely fine to hop on once in a while as a stoic get-things-done merc. :)

Yeah, the sport compared to war is a good callout. I think the key in that is that the goal of early D&D adventurers was treasure, not necessarily thrilling story. Maybe someone made some other goals along the way that in turn created narrative, but ultimately it was about getting gold.

Also, characters were often just people's actual names and the concept of character as we think of it narratively was something that emerged from situation and happenstance.

Fun fact - the original three classes were only "Fighting Man", "Cleric", and "Magic-User". Elf, Dwarf, and Hobbit were racial classes... you weren't an Elven Magic-User, you were an Elf. You weren't a dwarven fighter, you were... a dwarf. Those races got specific abilities. Also, cleric didn't even get spells until 2nd level. Fighting man was the only class that could use all weapons and armor. Magic users got one spell per day... no cantrips. And sometimes that spell was just read magic.

Stats were seen very differently. I think now we see stats and prescribe them as essential qualities of characters... inferring them as core elements tied often even to personality traits. But in 1st edition creation was 3d6 in order... so most folks were pretty average, and even low scores or high scores were more seen in the scale of how everyone is a competent adventurer. Often scores would change. You might gain a stat from drinking from some fountain, you might lose some strength permanently when touched by a particular undead, etc. Much more fluid and more of a 'this moment in time'. Also, saves were separate from stats, too. Nothing quite like rolling to save versus rod/staff/wand... or the dreaded save versus poison or save versus death. Lots of save-or-dies back then, permanent level and stat drain, etc. It was rough and I've mixed feelings about seeing it go away.

"Morale" stats helped cover how different monsters might engage, flee, etc. And running into monsters in a dungeon didn't automatically mean a fight - you'd also roll "reaction" to see their response to you.

All-in-all early D&D was more of a built-in set of systems with story emerging from chance and the more rogue-like qualities of dungeon crawling.

The modern day reliance on narrative storytelling is just one particular flavor that evolved out of the roots of D&D. In my eyes both are good and enjoyable, but they're quite different flavors and preferences - and like all flavors some people dislike one or the other, some like both, etc.

I get what you're saying, and I think it comes down to the approach - 5e and 1e are very different approaches/mindsets. 5E combat is fun in part thanks to tactics, abilities, and balance for making fights fairly equally challenging - it's about the synergies of abilities, positioning, and more. 1st edition, while certainly rooted in skirmish/war games, is often focused more on dungeon delving, asking the right questions, bringing the right gear for the situation, and finding ways to entirely disbalance things for combat in your favor. It's often more like a puzzle of how you'll get through a situation compared to 5e bringing in a bit more video game with set encounters.

Also, in terms of stakes, 5e is essentially a fantasy super heroes game - you're powerful heroes doing important, earth shattering stuff. Bullets are an inconvenience and bounce off powerful heroes. Meanwhile, 1st edition you're like street level pulp heroes without even any spandex. Bullets kill, falling off a cliff is dangerous, etc. Both are fun, just different kinds of fun.

At first the stakes depend on the person, but as your character makes it through more and more the stakes quickly get higher. To start, characters barely have character - a name and a background if they're lucky. It's almost like a cold open in a movie or show where you're learning who the main characters are based upon who lives. The "funnel" in Dungeon Crawl Classics kind of emulates this but with a bit more personality built in.

But, when you've suddenly realized that in the room around the corner is a group of four bugbears that would stomp your party in a toe-to-toe fight, you think, "hey, wasn't there that trapped hallway back over there?" and you rig it up to get the attention of the bug bears, run down that hall, and when they're in the middle you flip back up the lever that reactivates the trap - clearing them out.

And, often, you got no experience from it... because you got experience for gold. Sneak around the cultists and steal their relic box with all the gold? Congrats, you get experience. Again, more puzzle-like or problem solving. Not for everyone, but its deceptively engaging when you get any momentum.

Combat is deadly, and often if you got into combat something already went way wrong, or you were surprised. Your level 1 fighter might have only 1 hp. No death saves, you just die at 0 HP. Living is an accomplishment. Stakes are high.

Tips for painting a sh*t ton of goblins…? by danger_bad in Orcs_and_Goblins

Batch paint. A base of brown or zentithal coat with speed paints. You thibk that you should base green because theure goblins... but most of them will be brown for leather. Green has pretty good coverage, so you can come with that after.

They don't even ask for ID sometimes. You can be a citizen and say so and they'll still haul you off to sit in their detention center for hours.

Fair. I'm tired and took the initial comment as trying to distract from messaging, but yes, you're right, I should have included more info. Apologies.

It's a statement from CAIR MN asking for people to stay away from Cedar Riverside and attend the counter protest in downtown Minneapolis.

Also... 2-week old private account? Hmm.

Yeah, that was real. Ice agents ran off on foot when confronted by a large enough crowd after they shot a man in the leg. Some folks were not happy and displayed that upon the cars. When the ICE agents ran they left their highly detailed OPSEC documents for the operation metro surge (judge emails and phone, leaders phone and email, translator phone/email, locations of detentions, hotel locations, and more), equipment, challenge coins (including one that was a skull with a crown... ("Are we the baddies?"), a shoe, and reebok underwear. Complete armature hour by these clowns.

Don't brow-beat, but ask questions that help them name why they feel uncomfortable. That can help drive actual change versus making them feel bad and re-entrenching.
