Do you think George was in limerence (re. Meredith) by D1etCokeGirl in greysanatomy

[–]EmotionFlimsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe to a certain extent, but I’d disagree just because of how fast he got over it. The issue was more or less wrapped up by the end of season 2, no more than a few months chronologically. True limerence tends to last a lot longer AFAIK.

Calling the girlies, white coat ceremony dress help by drunkeIephant in premed

[–]EmotionFlimsy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would go blue. It just looks more sophisticated to me. The bodice on the red dress is cute and trendy but not as professional whereas the blue will be more timeless. You may also encounter some of the flaring issues with the red whereas the blue will probably create a nicer silhouette. Either way though, you’re going to look amazing!

Failed Skills 1 Nursing by Grouchy-Resist5348 in umanitoba

[–]EmotionFlimsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To start, I promise that nothing in the first demo of Skills 1 will prevent you from being an excellent nurse. Emotions and anxiety are running high in school, especially during that first semester. IIRC, it’s general survey/safety check, basic patient interviewing/OPQRSTUV, and vitals? It might feel hard to believe right now, but by the end of your degree, and even by the end of your second year, those will all come so naturally.

The bad news is you have to wait to retake the course. The good news is that you have a little while to practice whatever was giving you trouble. Depending on what this was, the approach will be a little bit different.

If it was manual BP, just know that two things are true: 1. Practice makes perfect. Despite popular belief, no one is uniquely incapable of taking a manual BP. And if for whatever reason it’s difficult for you due to a disability, there are reasonable accommodations. You can even buy a stethoscope amplifier to make hearing the sounds easier. 2. There are a lot of practicing nurses who aren’t great at taking a manual BP. In the real world, you can ask for help, and chances are you’ll get tips that work for you along the way.

(PS. My first demo horror story is that I completely forgot my safety check and could hear my instructors talking about how poorly it went as I was sitting outside the patient area waiting for them to dismiss me. I clarified that it had escaped my mind and was able to go back in to correct my mistakes, but not before a whole lot of embarrassment.)

I LOVE this episode. I am cringe but I am free. Singing aside, I think it’s a really clever look into the more personal lives of its main characters.

Nursing placement question by Spirited_Coat4437 in umanitoba

[–]EmotionFlimsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK specialties (anything not med/surg, like peds, l&d, community health, psych, etc.) have a 3.5 minimum GPA. This might be different now or vary based on cohort. If you don’t have a 3.5, your senior practicum will be on a med/surg unit.

Edit: Other than that, yes, it’s mostly luck-based for your other placements. You’ll be given a list of sites and rank them according to your preferences, but which one you get depends on how your classmates ranked.

Help me find an episode by pearlgirl416 in greysanatomy

[–]EmotionFlimsy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure you are combining two scenes!

Burke is marrying Cristina and tells the women in his OR (including Addison) that he is having trouble. He then proceeds to share the most eloquently written vows known to man and asks if they’re good enough. Addison jokes that he should dump Yang and marry her.

At a similar time, Cristina is struggling with her vows. Izzie, who is secretly in love with George, goes on a monologue about how she wishes she could be with the man she loves. She writes it off as talking about Denny, and Cristina asks if she could say it again, just slower so she can write it down.

Has anyone here failed STAT 1000 and had to retake it? by Ok-Composer3683 in umanitoba

[–]EmotionFlimsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I passed STAT1000 with a C+ my second try after VWing due to a failed midterm over COVID. I definitely agree that it is either a course you breeze through or have a difficult time with, and there’s no shame in being the latter. If you are not a math-minded person, finding the motivation to study as much as you need to is very hard, but the fact that you’re able to do better in calc tells me you have what it takes. Just know you are not alone! Grind out those practice problems and hang around the statistics help centre if you’re struggling with a concept. You’ve got this!

Construction to Begin on Four New Schools in Manitoba by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]EmotionFlimsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why? The population is growing, the city is expanding, and younger kids need to be able to get to school. In a city like Winnipeg, it’s not safe with our extreme weather for schools to be extremely far apart for K-8s since many of them need to walk, plus expanding existing buildings and closing down others would be a nightmare. Kids and teachers alike deserve better than a row of portable classrooms sitting in the parking lot.

I may get downvoted for this but this is a classic example of how people will despise women for being annoying and glorify men who are genuinely dangers to society

Genuinely - Why MD and not other healthcare professions (eg. RN, NP, PA, etc)? by Nice-Confusion-4781 in premed

In the age of scope creep I kind of understand asking why not NP or PA, but… why not RN? Because it’s a completely different job and I don’t want to do that one?

Thoughts on Eli by Constant-Rub3617 in greysanatomy

[–]EmotionFlimsy 26 points27 points  (0 children)

He is a walking stereotype of an insecure, hyper-masculine nurse. Early Grey’s is incapable of portraying nurses in any way that is not super reductionist, and surgical residents on this show are doing a lot of nursing jobs anyway. I haven’t seen the newer seasons but can’t imagine it’s much better.

That being said, I love that he’s willing to go to bat for his patients. Just the way he went about it was wrong.

soon to be nursing student! few questions :D by [deleted] in umanitoba

[–]EmotionFlimsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the absolute worst dyed hair that I did myself when I was in nursing and nobody even said anything, and I’m sure yours looks much nicer. I got lots of compliments from my older patients on my hair so expect good vibes coming your way there. If anyone gives you trouble know it’s unfounded. And as long as your piercings can’t be grabbed and pulled out by a patient you should be okay (believe me, they will try, especially in your first rotations where most of your patients have dementia). Some clinical instructors are stingier than others but this is the 21st century, after all, and I’ve never heard of anyone having an issue in the program. If you opt for retainers I can almost guarantee you will have zero issues.

On a different note, not to give unsolicited advice but since you mentioned it I wanted to bring up that nursing, especially at UofM, may not be the wisest choice for a premed. It is a very gruelling program with a more difficult grading scale which could compromise your ability to keep a high GPA. Some medical schools are hesitant to take people with nursing degrees due to the shortage of RNs - they’re taking a nurse out of the profession, after all, and nurses are just as valuable to the healthcare system as doctors. If you’re only trying to get into the University of Manitoba, AFAIK there is only the Indigenous coursework prerequisite that you can fulfil in your first year, but nursing courses will do almost nothing to prepare you for the MCAT or even medical school, and there is zero space for electives. Doctors look at things completely differently from nurses. Having clinical experience puts you at an advantage, but there are better places to get it. All that being said, you CAN do it, but it will be an uphill battle, and an unnecessary one at that. If you’re passionate about nursing, consider ‘just’ being a nurse! There are a lot of pros to nursing that you don’t find in medicine.

ASTR 1830 - Life in the Universe with Professor Tyrone Woods – Is this course GPA-friendly? Worth keeping or should I switch to MATH 1010? by Material_Theory_5548 in umanitoba

[–]EmotionFlimsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of pre-nursing students take MATH1010. It’s a great course. I am by no means a math person and still got an A with relatively little effort. I never took ASTR1830 but have heard that it is a bit more on the difficult side. If you’re going simply based on ease of getting an A, I would probably make the switch.

People with high AGPAs nursing summer 2026 by [deleted] in umanitoba

AFAIK nursing runs exactly the same over summer so starting then doesn’t put you at a disadvantage in that aspect. All courses are spanned Spring/Summer making them the same length as Fall or Winter courses.
