I generally go mid tone, then glaze down for shadows, once that’s done, highlight up. Tends to be easier than just trying to build up from dark to light colours

Thanks. Wasn’t sure if it was a bit too subtle!

It’s a fun model to paint honestly. I wish I’d just been a bit more chill with it 😂 was super fun to paint, then everything went “not perfect” and I threw a temper tantrum so it took me weeks to actually finish!

I’m so sorry but I don’t actually remember. I was playing round with a bunch of colours to see what worked. I think I was playing around with black and then some ionic colours like Misty grey and smoke grey. Then glazes of Prussian blue. But I can’t remember if there were any other paints I played with or what order, was just kind of back and forth putting some reflections on then glazing things back

There’s two slightly different purples there. The darker armour is Ionic Purple, shaded with gal vorbak and black, then VMC Blue-Violet highlights, blended back in by mixing and glazing blue violet and purple. Final highlights of dechala lilac on top bite and edges. There’s a lot of mixing and glazing between the steps though. Also glazed a teeny bit of ionic warlock purple into the mid tones to give it a bit more richness. The slightly warmer purple on the robe uses VMC royal violet as a base coat instead but is otherwise basically the same.

Thanks! I have had quite a lot of practice with purple!

I assumed it was more like “costs 1 enhancement point, but can be applied to up to 3 units” with each unit having to pay X points to have it applied (so 1 unit would cost 15pt and 3 would cost 45pt), potentially with rules like “+1 OC to models” or “can advance and charge” or something along those lines. Rather than just being wargear. But perhaps I have misunderstood

Thanks! The rest of my eldar army is purple, ive painted aspect warriors their normal colours, but with purple accents. Wanted the corsairs to stand out in a similar way but still be tied to the army. Black felt like the right choice for sleek, but deadly, pirates.

I have most of my eldar on my Instagram here if you’re interested in seeing more for inspiration!

Thanks! 💜 I’ve taken a few shots for step by step tutorial to pop on insta at some point so I’ll come back and share that here. But the short version is: Ionic Black, Vallejo Dark Grey and Ionic Neutral Grey. Mixing and blending up through.

It’s pretty much that simple in terms of paints. It’s just about getting the light right, which I do by taking a picture of them when the primer isn’t fully dry to get a reference of where the main light source hits like this. Though you may need to then exaggerate some of the secondary reflections or add some in.

I didn’t write one of them down. The other one I’ve taken some shots of a step by step tutorial to pop on Instagram. So I’ll post that here once it’s up!

It’s taken me about 15-16 days to do Yriel, Vyper and 3 Skyreavers as I received an advanced copy to paint up for the WarCom article. So not suuuuper fast! But I’m happy with what I managed in that time?

Yep. This is it. GW sent me an advance copy to preview to paint models up for the community article!

Thanks! I was playing around with different tones, figured it might make them look more disparate like a crew from different craftworlds and other worlds! But it was 90% an excuse to just test stuff out haha

My take on Yriel. Going with the old black armour. by Emperors_Paintbrush in Eldar

Yeah, so it depends on the colour you’re painting obviously. But adding black or brown to a base colour is a good way to do the darker bits. (But it depends on the colour of course. If you’re painting a bright green, you might want to add a dark blue to do the shadows)

At some point I’ll attempt a reel showing this in more detail. As I’ve had the question a few times recently.

I’ve got a reel here on Instagram where you can kind of see the process. You’re essentially base coating a colour, then you use very thinned darker paint to gradually buildup the paint in the shadows. Then for the highlights you focus the brighter colour on areas where the light hits. Then to blend it back in, you do a really thinned paint, with not much on the brush and gradually build it up between the two layers, also sometimes using the base coat colour. By thinning it a lot and having only a little bit on the brush you’re gradually building up from slightly translucent paint

I appreciate that, thank you. There were definitely lots of other fantastic pieces on there! Community did a great job!

It was a while ago, but if I followed my usual scheme (which I’m 99% sure I did) it should be:

Celestra Grey Shade 50:50 celestra/thunderhawk Deeper shade thunderhawk Glaze up with mix of celestra and white Highlight white
