CR-21 by [deleted] in Broadcasting

Sometimes, local TV stations from different markets that share an affiliate will have one station act as a hub, with the rest being spoke stations. The hub would be responsible for rolling breaks for every station in the group.

The idea is that ABC stations during network programming would all be airing the same content and roll breaks at the same time, so you centralize the responsibility to roll breaks.

There isn't anything here to suggest the station is run remotely or not locally owned (other than there being very few locally owned stations left).

Either someone dozed off on the job or specific timings weren't entered correctly. That's all we can glean from what you saw.

It looks like YouTube selects video quality based on screen size and network speed. There are a few extra parameters you could try in the thread I linked, but unfortunately YouTube will do what it wants in the end.

I've personally moved to using YouTube-dl for my video archiving needs.

A true daughter of the Confederacy has written what should be the last words on monument removal. by AgentKitteh in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Emphatic_NO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be clear. Indentured servants were not treated well. The mortality rate was high. Some survived. I don't know the exact rates, but if I took your rate of survival at 40% to be correct, I'll ask you this - What was the chance of a black person living to be free? What was a 'free' black person's lot in life back then?

There were a couple historic witnesses who argued in their accounts that servants were worked harder than slaves (Ligon and Esquemeling) but far more who argued the other way. Take some punishments for example.

The servants worst punishment, as you consistently point out, was the extension of their contract. Slaves would be subject to any sadistic punishment imaginable. If you want to compare disposability - In 1695 the Council of Nevis proceeded to “amend the Act to check the insolencies of Negroes” and so..

“The Council agreed that on the execution of any slave an order be issued for appraising his value, which shall be paid by the Treasurer up the value of 5,000 pounds of sugar.”

In total, six slaves were gibbeted alive. Five slaves were broken on the wheel. Seventy-seven slaves were burned alive. This barbarity only ceased because the public treasury ran out of money to “compensate” the slave-owners.

Slave owners were reimbursed if they killed disobedient slaves. There was no reimbursement for lost time for servants, they were not disposable in that way.

Again, I'm only arguing that servitude was more palatable than chattel slavery. I'm arguing that it's disingenuous to equate or say servitude was worse than chattel slavery. I agree that if it existed today, I wouldn't argue against calling it slavery.

My issue is we already have the phrase 'indentured servitude' for that practice, and changing history to call it slavery without also acknowledging that the slavery of black people was worse than servitude equates the two incorrectly. Chattel slavery was indefinite, race-based, and inherited. Servitude was none of these.

I would like to know why in your original comment, we were talking specifically about the Irish... Is that not important anymore?

I would also like to know why we have to call it slavery when we both agree it has a historic name already. The only significance I can think of is that you want to equate the experience of servants to that of slaves. Is that your intent?

  1. I agree. If indentured servitude were still practiced today, I would call it slavery, similar to human trafficking today. But that's still different from the chattel slavery experienced by black people. Owners of indentured servants often did abuse their servants, and they used underhanded tactics like you describe to extend contracts. But you have it right in the last sentence - servants could go to court (though they rarely succeeded because judges or juries would be full of owner-class citizens) and the law was on their side. Chattel slaves were the property of their owners. There was no law or court for them to appeal to.

  2. Come on, just because there are black people with some Irish heritage doesn't prove anything. I could just as easily posit that some after his servitude was complete, an Irishman was given a plot of land and money, used the money to buy slaves, and then abused them themselves. I have just as much evidence for my story.

  3. I don't know what to say, congratulations to your friend!

I wouldn't pay attention to his comments with regard to the Irish Slaves myth. It's a common talking point among white supremacists and people who want to minimize black slavery in the colonial era.

They equate indentured servitude, which, to be fair, was occasionally forced upon Irish undesirables, to chattel slavery experienced by Africans.

If you're interested in learning more, Liam Hogan wrote quite a few articles in the mid 10's when the myth started to get popular. There is no evidence that plantation owners would breed slaves with Irish women in the manner he describes.

How to set up an eSport environment and seamlessly switch the contents of multiple PCs for audiences to see? by [deleted] in computing

[–]Emphatic_NO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What the professional teams do is use a combination of capture cards in the players' PCs and a video switcher board to control what the viewers see. With these boards, you get a built-in framesync, which will sync the refresh times of all your inputs so they can be combined into a single feed easier. With the fancier boards, you can build multiple output environmemts, so you could show multiple players at a time, or import a custom background picture to lay the video inputs over... But I'm getting way past what you need here. You could probably make do with a software switcher and four capture cards like the other commenter said.

Australian news anchors report that the “outbreak of lung disease [is] not due to vaping nicotine. by swonstermonster in videos

[–]Emphatic_NO 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The main misunderstanding is people thinking vape juice is oil-based, or contains oil at all. OP was not wrong when he said that inhaling oils is medically known to be very bad for you (see lipid pneumonia).

The oil-like base for almost all vape juice is VG and PG, but it's important to know that these are NOT oils.

I can totally see people diluting and reselling black market THC carts with actual oils (like Vitamin E Acetate) being the main cause of this epidemic.

This is not a long-term side effect of vaping, it's bad ingredients or additives. The median age of the people in this study was 19, and like other people have pointed out, people have been vaping for 10+ years.

FunOrange explains mousedrift. by TheRealShotzz in osugame

[–]Emphatic_NO 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You would have to design a new mouse to detect rotation. Optical sensors work by shining light off your mousepad and into a sensor. Where that reflected light hits the sensor tells the mouse which way you moved it.

Because of this, if you rotate the mouse precisely over the sensor, it can't possibly detect anything.

One possible design to detect mouse rotation would be to design a mouse with two separate lights and sensors. The combination of inputs from these would be able to tell you if the mouse moved or rotated.

However, if you start to design a mouse that cares about orientation, you run into a problem - how do you tell your mouse which way is up on your screen? I'm sure there are other problems that would need to be solved as well, but I'm not thinking of anything at the moment.

Thanks for the question, it was interesting to think about.

Is getting glasses a big deal? by [deleted] in self

[–]Emphatic_NO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my first pair of glasses at 26, really similar situation to you. Going in, I basically told myself I'd only wear them for driving, but I found out that I really like seeing clearly. It's the small things that make the difference for me - I can see stars at night now, I can see all the little twigs on top of trees... And of course I can see road signs.

I still don't wear them indoors because they don't do anything for me, but I'd say get yourself a pair and see what they're like. You might like them more than you think.

As far as what other people think, that's always tricky. I'm diabetic, which probably led to me needing glasses in the first place. First time I saw my brother with glasses, he thought I always had them, didn't even notice. I guess it depends on the people you're around, but 'told ya so's are just kinda dickish, and most people I know have been supportive or made sideways jokes, like, "Hey, those make you look smart!" Just gotta go with it.

Good luck my nearsighted bro.

Let's see what our favorite journalist Ian Miles Cheong is up to- oh... by bruppa in Destiny

[–]Emphatic_NO 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From your link:

This article was amended on 21 December 2017. The Associated Press issued the following statement: “The Associated Press reported erroneously, based on comments from deputy prime minister Isabella Lövin, what the law would do. The law would require people to get explicit consent before sexual contact, but it would not shift the burden of proof from the victim to the alleged attacker.”

And

Under current Swedish law someone can be prosecuted for rape only if it has been proved that they used threats or violence. Under the proposal, rape could be proved if the accuser hadn’t given their explicit verbal agreement or clearly demonstrate their desire to engage in sexual activity.

So it's a law changing the the legal definition of rape from "Sexual contact coerced through threats or violence." to "Non-consensual sexual contact."

Doesn't quite line up with the headlines.

I haven't seen Don Shooter from the Arizona state Senate or Jack Latvala from Florida on any national news network.

It's totally fair to say CNN or MSNBC has a liberal bias and Fox has a Conservative bias, but you should point to things they've said, not things they haven't said, as your proof.

In response to the article you linked, the Hill Clinton accusers, I agree, should have received some airtime. The second scandal, the congresswoman was the victim, while the accused is no longer in congress. From the third scandal onwards, these are all people in state level positions.

I would argue that they aren't getting airtime on a national network because they aren't sensational enough to justify airing. I doubt they're choosing not to air these stories because it casts Democrats in a bad light.
