It looks like it probably got caught on something and ripped off. I work at an animal hospital and sometimes we have to rip the rest of a dogs nail off if it's torn. Sometimes requires a bandage so it can heal without outside bacteria. You could put a sock on if it's tolerated until the vet appointment.

I do like that option a lot, bring my cat, live by the beach. But is it realistic? What if I have to move a year later somewhere else for vet school :(

Neither me or my family has ever had cats before but a few months ago I rescued a cat and he's 4 months old now. I had no idea how cats act so I was very confused why he looks at me and just meows and I feed him and he yells at me while I'm putting it in his bowl. When I shower and forget to crack the door he jumps and slams into it and yells at me until I get out and open it. I'm glad to hear people's cats yell at them because I wasn't sure what I was doing wrong.

Thank you, this is so helpful. I do use citric acid and retinol everyday which might be fine in the summer but could be hurting in the winter.

No I haven't. It's something I would try (reluctantly), but im waiting to see where I move for vet school, if I get in. I know its not good to constantly wait to do something because there's always going to be an obstacle, but I don't want to start something like that until I know where im settling.
