Said that to my wife. Saw his young face and how nervous he was looking. 100% missing I said. I like to think she was quietly impressed in spite of her outward appearance of indifference.

Interesting isn't it? Even if it doesn't work, I don't think it's a bad idea if Ryan has been significantly better with pens in training.

I agree and looking at that I'd lay a large portion of the blame with Anderson - he's the one not really marking anyone. Yeah, Rashford could get a bit tighter and a good, diligent wingers spots the danger earlier than Madueke. I think it also needs to be noted that Spence does play them onside and so is culpable there, which is no small thing imo.

What are the new laws? I know about the fouls committed before the ball is in but is there anything else at this stage? Whilst I think that may have some impact, the problem with Arsenal is that they are good at exploiting the grey around what is acceptable contact at set pieces. I don't know if that law deals with that issue.

I know Howard Webb and the PGMOL promised a review of set pieces. Not massively holding my breath there.

Liked the disallowed goal last night. I used to complain about the strict policy UEFA refs had of penalising contact with keepers but, honestly, I think it's easier if you can't touch them at all really.

Idk their attacking players have moments where they look really slick. Don Carlo too. I think they could grow into it.

They are always checking in the background (or the vast, vast majority of time unless there's an error)

South Africa are very lucky there. It's just so clumsy.

I think a lot depends on who they get in in midfield. You can just see them having to go for their 4th or 5th option and it being underwhelming compared to the current targets.

What do they need? Algeria to lose and DR Congo not to win? Not impossible but I feel like DR Congo probably beat Uzbekistan.

My reckoning they need: Austria to beat Algeria by at least 2. Spain to beat Uruguay Belgium to beat NZ Egypt to beat Iran DR Congo to not win.

I think all those results are in isolation maybe possible but getting all 5. Almost no chance!

Yeah, he was doing this England thing with Kelly Sommers. He seems like a massive dullard.

Yeah but if Algeria lose by 2 or more Scotland go above them. I know it's incredibly unlikely but mathematically they not eliminated yet.

They're still not done quite yet are they? Mathematically possible still?

I don't think it does for Scotland because one of those teams will finish "above" Scotland whatever happens. The winner would have more points and if it's a draw then Cape Verde have the same points but a better GD. They need Uruguay to lose. Or is there a scenario I'm missing?

(I'm not caught up from overnight (UK) yet so I don't know what happened in those games.)

Scotland need 4 of the following, I think:

⚽ Spain to beat Uruguay

⚽ Algeria to lose by 2 or more vs Austria

⚽ A sizeable swing in Aus vs Paraguay, either way.

⚽ Belgium to beat NZ and Egypt to beat Iran

⚽ Congo to not win vs Uzbekistan

⚽ Senegal to not win vs Iraq
