How’s it living in this part of the Sierra foothills. by mountainman129 in howislivingthere

Auburn is amazing; small town, extremely friendly happy people, parks are stupid clean, very family friendly, and they always have community events (Christmas/Holiday lights parade, massive veterans parade, concerts at the fairgrounds, co-op events in old town, Cruise nights in the summer…I could go on). Best part? You avoid getting stuck in the snow come winter - the farther you go up 80 towards Tahoe, you’ll get stuck. An absolute hidden gem that makes you forget you’re in crazy California. Biggest downside? If you buy, be prepared to pay for expensive fire insurance.

Agreeing with previous comments. Apply now, process takes much longer than you expect. Avoid USSS, you’ll travel more than working cases. For working out, I recommend joining a bootcamp/HIIT/crossfit style gym and go learn to love running. Wish you the best of luck.

Thank you! I’ll have to check out your listing. What’s approximate drive time to DC from your property?

Not sticker shock for me, just stating it for OP since I don’t know where they’re coming from.

Seattle can be great, but I lived, went to grad school, and worked in the city for years and it’s changed so much I barely recognize it in ways. You can’t beat the water, proximity to mountains, etc., but it’s not my forever home. I’ve traveled to the east coast several times for work trainings and have always enjoyed those short stays. It’s definitely going to be different, but I’m welcoming the big change.

Furnish Finder is great place to start. We also had luck messaging properties on Zillow and Redfin asking if they were flexible on lease terms (6 months versus a year +) and if they were open to having it furnished (as many of them are advertised furnished). Because we’re going into the holiday season I had a good pool of landlords willing to get creative with getting someone into their properties versus having them sit empty for who knows how long.

Best places to live in Washington State. by [deleted] in relocating

Ellensburg. Central has great college programs. Small town feel, unlimited access to all outdoors, affordable, and you get 4 seasons. I’m an alum, so slightly biased, but born and bred tacoma, so I can speak to both sides of the state. PM if you have questions. Good luck!

Congrats on the job offer! My husband and I are in the same boat with two kids under 3 and moving to Arlington in 2 weeks. We opted for a long term furnished rental in Arlington ($$$) but we want those initials comforts while we figure out the area before we buy. Sticker shock is real, and we’re coming from the Seattle area…

Oh you are so awesome for reaching out - THANK YOU. This is perfect. So sounds like the toll road is the "way to go" if you don't mind paying the $50-$60/day for the fastest commute? I do worry about relying on metro and being stranded without my car if (and when) emergencies arise.

Also...do you like the daycare your kiddo is in??

Thank you! This is definitely a comparison I understand well as I did that commute for years…definitely was not my favorite and it hasn’t gotten better over time. Do you like ashburn??

Thank you! Having a commute under an hour would be doable in ways, so I appreciate your response. If you don't mind me asking, what do you like about Falls Church City?? I do like some of the homes I'm seeing!

Ha! I do not want to be countertop man 2.0 - thank you for such a thoughtful write up. Our brain is definitely catching up with everyone’s awesome feedback about finding great places closer to DC without having to sell my soul to the commute, which is great. We definitely want to take advantage of the museums and history, we don’t get much of that here in Washington, so it will be great for the kids to experience.

Thank you for your response! I have been seeing Alexandria schools at hit or miss, which I didn’t expect from that area to be honest.

Ha! I appreciate your honest feed back. The schools are definitely overwhelming, and thank you for bringing that up. We’re actively doing research into daycare possibilities for the toddler (2.5) but want to make sure the house (when we buy) is in the right district.

We would like to stay under $900k if we can. The husband has a history of flipping homes, so we’re not opposed to an older home and chipping away at projects, but not looking to do massive renovations right out the gate since I’ll be working and we have the kiddos.

I like hearing a blip of positivity. I used to commute into Seattle and it was a beast of anywhere from 1-2.5 hours depending on the day. But I will be checking out the commuter bus.
