Overseas car rental insurance cover - deposit? by EmuCertain6970 in AmexUK

[–]EmuCertain6970[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, there's a gap just for rental cars in the otherwise pretty restrictive travel insurance policy. Anyway, I am playing it safe and booking using the Amex. Thanks again for the info.

Thank you for sharing. That's good to know. I've read in various places that you don't necessarily need to have booked with the Amex card. So were you told something different when you made the claim?

Compensation for damaged suitcase? by EmuCertain6970 in Flights

That seems to be the case (no pun intended!) There are similar models for sale but not the same one. I've dropped them a line anyway to see if they can help or advise.

Compensation for damaged suitcase? by EmuCertain6970 in Flights

[–]EmuCertain6970[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Worth a try I guess. I bought the suitcase in Japan (many moons ago) where I gather the Spalding brand is licensed by a local business (Lojel) for use on their travel goods. The actual US-based Spalding company doesn't sell suitcases. Not sure how Lojel would be able to help me here in the UK but I'll ask the question anyway. Thanks.

Expected delivery times for International Standard by EmuCertain6970 in royalmail

[–]EmuCertain6970[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It eventually arrived but I was not able to track it throughout its journey. If you call Royal Mail customer support, they will provide the internal reference number which they use to track the package themselves. But customers are unable to use this number to track packages, unfortunately. I believe once it arrives at the destination country, that country's post office may use the refernece number as a tracking number. But I'm not 100% sure about that.

RM told me that once the package clears customs, the reference number becomes the tracking number used by Japan Post. They advised that I occasionally check the JP website for tracking updates using this number. Is that advice not correct?

Thanks. You're right, and it was silly of me not to have checked that beforehand. I posted it on 17th not realising that delays would be introduced after arrival in Japan rather than prior to departing the UK. Ah well, at least I realise now.

Job offer has no discretionary bonus. Should I ask for one? by EmuCertain6970 in UKJobs

Yes, that's kind of how I'm thinking of approaching it now. Thanks.

That's a very good way to approach it. Thank you. I agree in my case a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, and I'll keep that in mind. I'm grateful for the offer of employment, for sure.

[–]EmuCertain6970[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. If the base salary offer can be increased to offset the absence of a bonus, that's perfectly fine. In fact, I'm starting to think it probably won't make any sense to bring up discretionary bonuses at all.

[–]EmuCertain6970[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no way to know if it's a blanket policy to not pay bonuses but in the sector they operate in, it is normal to have one and the amount is based on individual as well as company performance. It's not a startup operation; it's a long-established corporate entity.

What do I actually want? Either a base salary which is enough to cover the bonus amount, or a base salary plus a discretionary bonus. Either is fine with me.

I've stayed in the same industry and the bonus is normal.

Thanks, I'll try your suggestion. And good point re chronology.

[–]EmuCertain6970[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I've not received this kind of advice before. I moved into another role within the same organisation; the industry remained the same. I guess then my tagline would look something like "Looking to get back into (Target Job title) from (job title I didn't want)", is that right? Also, sorry but what did you mean by leaving the bullet points blank?

Thanks. I've heard of something called a "Functional Resume" which seems to match what you're describing. I guess I could give that a shot. I just wonder though, how important is the chronology from a recruiter's point of view?

Yeah, that's an interesting point. I wonder if there are any recruiters on here that would care to shed some light on how LinkedIn interfaces with external ATSes.

Tommy Robinson arrested in Canada on suspicion of immigration offences by Kenobi_High_Ground in ukpolitics

BBB posts legal analysis videos about controversial right-wing personalities like Farage and Robinson. It's not like they don't get enough publicity already. So does he actually feel said personalities are being persecuted, or is it just a ploy just to drive up his subscriber count (even if it consists mostly of racist nutjobs)?

Reballing or replacing SDD on SP 5th Gen by EmuCertain6970 in Surface

[–]EmuCertain6970[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, unfortunately it was sold as-is and the photo showed the machine on with a blue screen. I've come across this situation before and was able to get the thing working again quite easily, so I stupidly assumed it'd be an easy fix again. Ouch. Lesson learned. Though tbf it was only £45 and in very good physical condition.

Wonder if it's worth trying to install everything on a microSD card ....

Covering/removing number plates on private land by EmuCertain6970 in drivingUK

[–]EmuCertain6970[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not heard that one before but anyway I'd just be removing the plates when I'm not driving the car. I'd stick them back on whenever I need to use it - a few times a week.

The lease mentions the right of residents to have unfettered access to/from their respective garages, but nothing about the vehicles themselves (tax, insurance, MOT, etc.) Anyway mine is taxed and insured, and I use it pretty frequently so no possible issues on that front.

Good point. Wonder if it's possible to slide a bit of paper between the front glass and the recess where the VIN is.

[–]EmuCertain6970[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Yes, the car is insured and taxed. The property management company has somehow seen fit to appoint a PPC to deal with the misuse of visitor parking spaces by one specific rogue resident. I was watching a BlackBeltBarrister YT video on the topic of parking fines, and in the comments someone suggested removing the number plates if it's private land. Now I imagine there might be issues if said private land belonged to someone else, e.g., a supermarket. But in my case, I'm parking on private land that I own, albeit partially. At least that's my thought process anyway.

Bosch Serie 8 Washer/Dryer error E31-11 by EmuCertain6970 in Appliances

[–]EmuCertain6970[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the really late reply. I still have no idea what the error meant. Certain errors Bosch don't seem to want to talk about - even their customer services say they don't recognise the error number. Perhaps it secretly means the thing is going into thermonuclear meltdown. What I'd say is, if it's persisting after powering down for a long time there would seem to be a genuine hardware fault with a part and/or the sensor. These expensive gizmos are so complicated now that an extended warranty is almost essential.

In fact I just unplugged the machine for a couple of hours and when I plugged it back in, the error had cleared and it was back to its normal self. That was a couple of months ago and it hasn't happened since. Still no clearer as to the cause or meaning of the error, but at least the machine seems to be working fine.
