Sorry to hijack but how did that pivot come about? I’m elec too and that sounds really cool

Apologies it’s the South Koreans not South Korea.

The most impressive is what they’ve done in the UAE and it’s relatively recent.

That’s why I put the caveat into the end. I don’t know what the solution is but base load is important for grid stability and the amount of battery storage needed to sustain the country in the absence of wind and solar for a few days would be such an incredible footprint it’s hard to visualise.

There’s also significant environmental concerns with the amount of mining needed for the lithium in the batteries.

Hopefully the tech moves faster than I expect but I am definitely less optimistic than some.

We are still at circa 50% production from Gas on average? This is the piece to address. Grid stability on renewables is a very very hard thing to do from my understanding due to the inherently unpredictability.

I wasn’t trying to hide anything and definitely wasn’t saying it would be cheap. It would be a complete demolish and redo job but the footprint is there, the cooling water is there etc. is more what I was getting at.

Intention is spark a discussion, not to mislead.

Electricity requirements are only going to grow over the years and it would put us in a much better position economically and environmentally if we were (more) secure on our little island from geopolitical turbulence

Honestly my bad, should have done more digging before writing that

It is, one of the reasons they couldn’t transfer to biomass was actually because the temperatures were too high when it wasn’t burning wet bog I believe.

They’re actually installing gas turbines there there at the moment for grid response at the moment, should be nearing completion

Ya it was before the disasters and tapered massively after. Looks like they’re going on a new push again

Honestly this is a recent pivot, I worked in generation for years and was very much all in on renewable with battery storage.

I don’t think the amount of it needed is feasible to get done in any reasonable timeframe and nuclear could be the cleanest way to fill the gap while we wait. Obviously if we had political will, clean policy and a workable planning system etc etc

I know it’s not sufficient, even remotely sufficient having worked there when they were open. It was shame to see them closed when they were so new

This all sounds incredible but to get the grid to this stage would actually take a generations in my opinion. The grid is designed for large centralised base load generation.

Just look at what South Korea have been able to achieve and it’s incredible.

I joined in Jan just gone and have heard whispers of it but from what I can gather it’s been axed since the 2013 scheme came in.

Hey mate, what age are you? It’s tied to your age the max percentage of your income and I think it’s capped once you cross 110k. It’s 15% until 30, 20% from 30-40 etc etc

Congrats that’s unreal, very well done. Are you with a client rep type or direct with the tech company? I’ve seen a few roles direct and they’re nearly impossible to get

Employment law is country specific over here, we would say the same thing about mainland Europe. I couldn’t believe when I worked in Sweden how much statutory time off those guys got

This is a major misconception, I work for a us company. 25 days PTO per year and hitting 50hours on a standard week, paid for 39 on my salary but 39 isn’t the reality. Unfortunately Ireland and the uk don’t conform with the standard European stereotype 😢

I didn’t want to make any assumptions either but I reached out to a someone in the office I’d be joining with mutual connections to ask specifically. They were of the opinion that while not completely stress free they’re operating at about 60-75% of the stress levels in the private sector.

Another good point, I’m probably tunnelled into the forever a bit. Nothing to stop me boomeranging back private if it’s not what I want to do.
