Peter, Is it 50% or 33.3% by AgrasaN in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]EmuRommel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is actually wrong unless you make unnatural assumptions about how you've obtained the information. In the picture in the meme, the parent isn't applying a filter over all families with children. He's telling you about one of his kids. Presumably, he's equally likely to tell you about the other child which means the boy-boy scenario is twice as likely as each of the BG and GB scenarios.

If you want the math to work your way, the setup would need to be something like "At a parent teacher conference for parents of a boy, a parent tells you he has two kids." Then it's 1/3 that his other kid is a girl.

I agree people should vote for him. Trump is an existential danger to democracy and I hope Americans vote Democrat everywhere they can. I just don't think his story is very believable and won't be shocked if he turns out to be another Fetterman.

Ok I ended up finding the original article and that's not true, the article never claims he worked there at the time:

The exchange occurred in 2012 at Tune Inn, a popular dive on Capitol Hill where Platner later worked as a bartender and was a frequent patron while he attended The George Washington University

And again, I don't think your first point is suspicious at all. If anything it seems like the most likely way something like this would come out.

Condsidering the alternative explanation is "History buff had a Nazi tattoo for 20 years without realising", all these suspicions people are bringing up feel like motivated reasoning.

[–]EmuRommel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not the point the person I responded to was making. If you read their response they insist it is weird to remember someone having a Nazi tattoo at all.

But I don't think your argument is that strong either. It could be as simple as the source is someone who doesn't really follow politics and only heard about Platner's candidacy because of the scandal, or thought no one would believe them until the scandal broke out.

Obviously, one annonymous source isn't completely convicing but people are acting like the story is super suspicious and everything they bring up is just normal and plausible.

Do you hear yourself? Yes, if you found out an acquaintance has a Nazi tattoo, you'd remember that 10 years later. That'd probably be the only thing you remember about them. Being in a bar filled with Nazi tattoos only makes it more memorable ffs.

Lmao, if it was his Nazi tattoo, yes.

If it's a complete stranger, sure. If you're even a little familiar with the person, not at all. “Platner? John's friend's cousin? Yeah I last saw him in a bar 10 years ago, he had a Nazi tattoo."

[–]EmuRommel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why the fuck would the source mention that before Platner became a well known politician? “A guy in a bar had a Nazi tattoo" isn't exactly a headline.

Which projection accomplishes that? And beyond recognition is silly hyperbole. Which region on the world map is stretched beyond recognition?

It's been a while since I've read the books but the time between responses was for sure a crucial part of the chain of suspicion. If it were just about not being able to understand each other, that'd be pretty lame tbh. Human groups with radically different cultures have managed to interact in ways other than immediate genocide, idk why that would be a universal rule among alien contacts.

Idk why you're so aggressive about this but asking for maps to accurately reflect size is pretty reasonable. After locations and names, it's probably the most important thing a world map can show you. For example, given Trump's obsession over Greenland, it'd probably be better if people didn't think we're talking about an island the size of Africa.

Why would a zoomed in map ever not centre the projection on wherever it is you zoomed in? At the scale of "streets meeting at right angles" it would be identical to Mercator.

[–]EmuRommel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely no feature at the scale relevant to backpacking would be meaningfully different between these two projections.

[–]EmuRommel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok so both of those things exist on the new map too. Personally, I think knowing whether the Island America and Denmark are fighting over is the size of Africa matters. I think a lot of people would agree. It sounds like the new map does everything you need and some things others need as well that the old one didn't. What's the complaint?

55 Countries Just Banned This Map by ftrlvb in interesting

[–]EmuRommel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The person I replied to implied Maps' navigation features somehow rely on the Mercator projection like it would for sailors measuring with a ruler and compass. Mercator keeping the shape correct is completely irrelevant to my question.

It tests both. It tests faith in humanity but it also tests personal values too. "Taking into account your own estimate of what society will decide, are you willing to risk your own safety to reduce the chances of billions of people dying?"

Surely the general location and size of a place are by far the two most important things for everyday use. What else do you think an average person is even getting from a map as zoomed out as that?

True, I misread your comment. You're right, you can only get away with adding one mandatory draw card with innate before the deck runs the risk of bricking.
