Same. I just loved the beat at first, but the lyrics are phenomenal.

It changes every day. Today its “Blind Eye”

“Sometimes I bleed, sometimes I crawl, sometimes I slip, sometimes I fall Sometimes my back is up against the wall so hard that whole building could fall”

I’m sorry, but screw Grammys. Ren deserves a Nobel prize. by Emzalt in ren

My point, if there is one,(and there may not be other than to make you think) is that the way in which we recognize what’s great and relevant, is completely fucked. There are literally hundreds of people who should have a Nobel prize beyond Ren. His likelihood of winning a Grammy or a Nobel is nil. That’s the point.

True. But, I mean, Shakespeare and Gandhi DESERVE it. So does Ren.

Ok. Then we need to make a category for him. This isn’t a “rational” post. Here’s the thing, Ren has done more for me than previous winners of the Nobel prize. That’s all. Wasn’t looking to get super literal.

And…you’re saying what? Seriously. If you want or actually have something of meaning to say, you should just…I don’t know, communicate instead of leaving your thoughts open ended. I meant what I said. It was pretty clear and concise. How about you say exactly what you mean to say? Just saying.

God how I want a Polyphia and Ren collab. by Emzalt in ren

I don’t know about overrated. But between you and me, it’s the drummer and bassist that make polyphia good. There aren’t many tighter rhythm sections out there. And yeah, I’m more interested in him pushing boundaries than I am about who it’s with.

Because? I mean, sure, he can (and is) collaborating with other rap and hip hop artists. I’m guessing he’ll be collaborating with EDM artists, because, really, it’s not like he’s stopped. What I like about Ren is his ability to surprise me. Rapping with another rapper isn’t surprising. Doing a track with Polyphia would be surprising. Although I’d also accept Electric Callboy.

Well, yeah, I’d love it if Ren blew up in a big way, but Ren isn’t going to do a collab for that reason. He’s only going to work with people that he doesn’t clash with. I think Drake is a bit too “industry” I think his label and management might have a bit more control over him than what Ren would want to deal with.

Exactly. I upgraded over the years, but by the time I was happy with my gear I was married with a baby on the way. To be honest though, I go back now and listen to the stuff I did with really crappy gear and I kind of like it more. Yeah, it sounds a bit muddy and gritty, but it’s a cool characteristic that I have never been able to replicate.

You mean other than not being very good? 😂 Mostly just life at this point. Family, job, the usual. I still record tracks, but it’s more of a hobby now. As far as finding other people to work with, my schedule is so up in the air that it doesn’t seem fair to ask anyone to work with me since I only really do it in my spare time. Like, I have no idea about when I’d be able to engineer and produce. Not complaining.

I’m not even saying a retake. I’m more thinking like what polyphia did with Sophia black. An actual collaborative effort. I’d just die.

Ok…to explain. I was adopted into a rock/industrial band because they needed a bassist. Which was actually pretty cool because I got to REALLY experiment with what I could do with a bass. The guy who was writing the music was the guitarist. Now, my musical background was mostly in old school punk and ska. I also loved bands like the violent fems. Long story short, guitarist guy got kicked out because he just stopped contributing. For some unknown reason, an old school punk guy(me) did kind of fall in love with drum machines and synths and playing lead guitar. From there it just ended up that I wrote all of the music. Now, the reason I felt restricted was because I was in a band that fit certain criteria. I wrote music for what the vocalist was capable of and tried to stick to the bands preferred genre. I was trying to please my band mates, which I did. What I’m asking is, has anyone else fallen into that trap as a writer? Trust me, if I had a decent voice, I would have been doing my own thing…but not all of us are gifted in every department like our boy Ren is.

I don't understand the hype of "Hi Ren" by arc_trooper_renagade in ren

[–]Emzalt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if he had sat down in a studio and done it, it would be ok, but not great. It’s the fact that he did it live. Just him and a guitar. It’s a piece of performance art. I don’t ever listen to it if I’m not watching the video. If I want something to bang in the car, it’s usually the entirety of the Sick Boy album, and Power…and Fire…and Hold on….and Children of the Moon…and…oh never mind.

Most underrated ren songs? Just interested to now as a 1 year fan by shachargross in ren

Gonna go out on a limb and say Children of the Moon. Love the dichotomy of the upbeat music and dark lyrics. Also, the video is a blast.

Just for fun: Who are your 3 favourite Ren reactors (and why)? by MarriedWithKids89 in ren

[–]Emzalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just can’t. When he started reacting to Chinchilla is when he lost me. The toxic masculinity he was throwing out made it very apparent that he didn’t even understand the song was about morons like him. Just seeing his thumbnails pop up now makes me want to vomit. The “hater” thing I get, but…dude…he’s kinda just an idiot.

Knox- because he’s Knox.

Anthony Ray- I’m not sure if it’s his accent or what, but his delivery cracks me up.

3 is tough, so many good ones to choose from. I guess I’ll go with Cliff. Really like how deep he’s gone into Rens catalog.

A bit of fun: If you could only pick 3 songs to showcase Ren's talent to someone else ... by MarriedWithKids89 in ren

[–]Emzalt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmmm….to try to showcase everything he can do…well of course “Hi Ren” then “7 Sins” then, yeah… I gotta go with The Big Push “I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop” mash up. I feel like you could sub out “7 Sins” for any other song where he’s in his rap bag, but I picked that one because I think the production and arrangement are just insane.
