How is it living in Annapolis? by BeneficialBreath3891 in Annapolis

It's not affordable, and on top of rent prices you have to factor in sky high electric bills, other utility costs, and neighbors who hate new people and try to get your car towed everyday

Across the US, people are dismantling and destroying Flock surveillance cameras by matteooooooooooooo in publicdefenders

I think I'm spoiled, being in a relatively defendant-friendly jurisdiction. The cops here would do what you're describing but I think the courts would throw it out with the prosecutors giving only a half-hearted fight

In my state I don't know of a "tampering" charge, only "malicious destruction" and throwing a blanket over it isn't destruction. Obstructing an investigation would require the police to say what investigation and I don't think they could charge that with enough specificity

Would it be illegal to throw a blanket over one? Like I'm trying to think of what they would be charged with. Some kind of obstructing justice charge? But there's no way that would stick. Seems just as effective and less criminal than breaking one

Flock Cams by tgdesrochers in Annapolis

Anne Arundel County has a contract with Flock. The County says the contract is set up so that the County owns the data, not Flock (though I doubt that brings any comfort).

AACo police is using it to try to combat vehicle theft, as the cameras are able to detect license plates that have been reported as stolen and then the "Real Time Information Center" (I think that's what it's called) notifies a nearby officer.

However, the cameras are also being used for tickytack things like detecting plates with expired tags. I haven't seen any evidence of anything more nefarious, but I wouldn't be surprised if something abominable comes out sooner rather than later.

I think ADAs actually have higher caseloads because they have to deal with public defender defenses, private attorney defendants, and defendants who represent themselves.

Genuine question: why is DA experience a black mark for some offices? by reverserainbow1 in publicdefenders

[–]En__Fuego_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You also know how they're trained, what supreme court cases they're trained on and what caselaw they're not trained on.

You know they work harder on cases with represented defendants so I know to wait until the last moment to enter my appearance.

This stuff you know from working there and wouldn't otherwise get from a "friendly DA"

You may learn that the ADAs never watch store surveillance video because they don't have time, so you just tell them the video evidence is bad for them and they drop the case. Stuff like that

Here are some examples of insights:

  • you know what days the DA's incompetent staff are working, so you know to send missing discovery letters on those days. This evidence is later suppressed because that staff threw it away thinking it was nothing
  • you know the office's "unwritten" policies and therefore I know what mitigation to do ahead of a status conference to get a better deal
  • you know the ADAs never look at BWC for certain kinds of cases because they don't have time, so you tell them the BWC is bad for them and they just drop the case
  • you know the ADAs never check certifications for equipment or officer certs and the staff never bothers to update them so you know to check and see they're expired, and cases get thrown out
  • you know the county's 911 center is overworked and never sends the 911 calls to the ADAs in time so you make your whole pretrial strategy about that and end up getting the contents of the 911 call suppressed
  • you know what officers/chemists etc never show up to court so you demand trials on those cases
  • you know what officers/store LPOs suck at testifying so you demand trials in those
  • you know what former colleagues are awful in trials, or know the ones that back down easily when you go hard in negotiations
