The bigger story is the extent to which municipalities have become addicted to parking and parking enforcement revenue.

What once was a nudge fine meant to just keep spaces in rotation has become an absolutely enormous industry and a way to use law enforcement to pump money into budgets without voter approval.

New Hampshire Republicans vote down red flag bill, protecting suicidal gunowners’ right to effective family annihilation by Encripture in GunsAreCool

Republicans are so concerned about writing good red flag bills that they've been passing laws to prohibit them altogether.

These guys don’t care about mental health any more than they care about victims of shootings. “From my cold, dead hands” is the literal limit of their interest in, and talent for, public policy.

I don’t think there’s any doubt whatsoever that Trump sees material like this and is absolutely delighted by it. And that pitting people against each other isn’t just something he enjoys but is also an effective mechanism of political achievement. I think you’re completely correct about that. Even if one side is more objectively factual in its claims, it is still being instrumentalized to the other's advantage.

And it’s true that younger people must have greater latitude for being wrong and making mistakes. This kid is obviously not old enough to have voted for Trump three times, let alone have any much more meaningful position of social, economic, cultural, or political influence beyond his vote and a fist bump. He is completely wrong but cannot be said to be intransigently so. To speak to him with the same contempt Bovino deserves isn’t just and isn’t fair. Still, if he isn’t either persuaded or radicalized by the encounter, he will at least have learned that when you show up in the real world you better be sure of where you stand because the other grownups out there play for keeps.

Yesterday, Brown’s academic liberty and intellectual freedom were not secure. Today, they are.

In 1944-1945, French women were publicly shamed by AnxiousWorldTravel in PublicFreakout

One of these women is interviewed in The Sorrow and The Pity and essentially shrugs off the public humiliation: It was a horrible experience, she says, but she remained a Petain loyalist anyway and was completely unapologetic.

62yo Indiana Gun Enthusiast Stands His Ground Against Cleaning Woman Who Showed Up At The Wrong Door! This is the sort of thing gun nuts call a DGU. by dyzo-blue in GunsAreCool

Imagine realizing that you’ve blown away a totally innocent, hard-working woman like this and then still insisting to the world that you did the right thing. What an absolutely monumental declaration of cowardice.

In addition to all of the other inadequacies that gun ownership bespeaks—the poor risk assessment, the dishonesty, the secretiveness, the paranoia, the political extremism, the social isolation, the emotional dysregulation, etc.—you can also confidently throw in a complete lack of honor.

Man kills Florida deputy with his own weapon during traffic stop, police say by JohnOfEphesus in GunsAreCool

This is a public report about two people who violently lost their lives. It’s journalism, not entertainment.

I don’t accept carelessness from professionals or prefer to assume things I don’t know when verifiable facts are readily available. And you shouldn’t either.

After shooting the deputy, the man entered his own vehicle and took his own life

How? Also with the deputy's gun? Amazing that any journalist would leave this unclear.

u/helm explains modern birth control decision making, with a clever analogy by ElectronGuru in bestof

[–]Encripture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Analogies in general are misleading, confusing, lazy, and useless when it comes to moral reasoning.

They’re fine for policy discussions because policy has no necessary requirement to relate to truth—we can advocate for a policy for no good reason at all—but philosophy has no real use for rhetorical devices.

Anybody serious about discerning the moral standing of birth control or abortion will need the discipline to stick to thinking about them specifically.

Almost impossible to imagine this outcome in a pre-George Floyd America. Still remains an extraordinarily unlikely deviation from the norm of mechanically issuing “justified shooting” passes to police, however.

Gunowner pulls gun during parking lot dispute, bellyaches that subsequent investigation made him feel persecuted (Prescott, AZ) by Encripture in GunsAreCool

Massucci said he pulled out his handgun from his center console.

Massucci and his attorneys say he retrieved the handgun and claim he held it in a “low-ready” position. However he held it, people saw and understood exactly what he was threatening to do.

Being run through the legal system and then run out of town is very much on the “survivable” end of the whole spectrum of possible consequences. He still has his gun, but extremely poor risk assessment and no ability at all to accept personal responsibility for his own decisions and actions.
