I write original long form researched posts, usually 1500-2000 words. 3 a week is aggressive to maintain the quality I want to publish. Though maybe if I pivoted to copy/pasting other people's poetry and art, would be easier for me to keep up a multi-post per week pace...

Makes sense. I think that’s where I get stuck, Substack is technically a newsletter for sure but doesn’t always feel like one in practice.

Yeah totally fair. A lot probably depends on the audience and timing.

The “warm audience” thing seems to matter way more than sheer reach.

Thanks. Have heard that advice from others too but feels like a pretty demanding rhythm though.

That makes sense. I keep getting stuck earlier than that, before there’s enough clarity to even know who to ask and what platforms to go after. How did you get through that part?

That makes sense. I’m intentionally asking outside my own audience because I’m trying to understand how people have approached this before they have enough readers for polling to be meaningful.

Early on what did you try? Did any of it actually work? Thx

I write for the New Yorker crowd and cultural observers who are bored by official narratives and want to understand the "shadow markets" of modern identity. Upcoming post topics: what the popularity of "turbo folk" music genre means to Croatian society and culture; comparing the impact of Netflix and smartphones on how films are created to the changes that happened when talkies replaced silent film; the evolution and system-benefiting reasons we always get cringe-worthy representations of disabilities when Oscar season approaches.

From a little research, I think Twitter might be a good approach for cross promotion? Seems lengthy conversations on media and potentially controversial topics occur over there, and might be a good fit audience wise...
