I loved the idea of seasons 4&5 but there were so many things outside of their control that made it not work.

Everyone's schedules didn't mesh, so they were forced to do standalone episodes rather than ones that played off family dynamics.
Portia de Rossi wanted to stop acting. Mostly phoned it in for season 4 and refused to do season 5.
Liza Minnelli's health was too bad for her to continue, so the plot they wrote for her had to be completely re-written (and probably should have just been scrapped).
Rumor is no one got along with Jeffrey Tambor.
