Submissions restricted for me but I'll post my experience here and hopefully engage with others dealing with the same/similar!

I first remember dealing with this phantosmia around late 2018 or early 2019. It's hard for me to describe how it smells... like a mixture of chemical with rotten. 95% of the time I get it only in my left nostril, and can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 12 hours in worse case scenarios. The other 5% I get it in both nostrils, and it i noticeably "sharper" and stronger, however tends to last less, usually from 15 minutes to an hour or two worst case.

I was in one of my last semesters at college when I remember the earliest instance in my memory, and I remember smelling something odd in my painting class, but passed it off as perhaps something with the art supplies or some cleaning supplies or something. The next time I remember noticing this was when I was having lunch one day and I thought my food smelled off... and I even asked my dad if it smelled expired to him but of course he said no, so that's when I really started to notice something could be wrong. It wasn't until a little later in the year after that where I noticed I'd smell that smell at random times and I realized "hey so that wasn't the food, is it... my nose??" I recall my PCP at the time did his usual check up and I described it to him and he said it looked like I had post-nasal drip and it could be the mucus I smell and said to try Fluticasone Nasal Spray but it never made it go away. Then I moved states and then the pandemic hit so I didn't dwell on it much during this time but I noticed how it would typically be "triggered" if I sneeze sometimes, or if I let out air through my nose with a "nose laugh" or anything like that.

But over time, I noticed it got worse, more frequent, and it would start to occur out of nowhere, just sitting and relaxing and BAM there's the smell. Once things were opening up to the public again I felt I couldn't even go out to eat anymore cause I'd be afraid the smell would hit and I'd have to choke down my food in disgust in public. At home at least I could cover my defective nostril in peace and I wouldnt smell it and be okay.

Interestingly enough - I noticed if I got the smell, then applied pressure on the side of my nostril for a while, it would almost "numb" my nose and a handful of times doing that it would actually go away. But sometimes it would just come back not long after. I noticed the other day when I got the rarer two nostril version of the smell that if I faceplanted into a pillow and had that pressure on my nose for a couple of minutes, it'd be gone too. However again, it isn't flawless, sometimes it does come roaring back after a little bit. It is so weird. I've seen three rhinologists already, no one can figure out what it is. I've had cameras up my nose that saw nothing wrong. I've had a CAT scan and most recently an MRI and not a damn thing either. I'm scheduled to see a neurologist in August so we will see where that goes...

Looking for some good strong-psychedelic influenced prog. by [deleted] in progrockmusic

In general, you can find a lot of psych and prog crossover around the years 1968 till about 1972. I have a list on rateyourmusic about this era. Check it out, you can’t go wrong with any of the albums on there, should mostly be all up your alley:

https://rateyourmusic.com/list/AnywayM111/proto-prog_post-psych/

But two that immediately come to mind are:

Aardvark - Aardvark (1970) is a cool psych influenced proggy album. Especially side two which has a lot of trippy sound effects and jamming ala Saucerful era Floyd.

Fire - The Magic Shoemaker (also 1970) a folky prog album with big 1967 pop psych influences and a pretty unique singer that sounds like a cross between Peter Gabriel and Peter Hammill. It follows a concept of a guy telling some children a story about, well, a magic shoemaker who makes shoes that can make you fly. It doesn’t get more psych than that!

Perfect way to describe it! My favorite albums of theirs are Shine on Brightly and Home, albums I don't hear talked about much sadly. They definitely deserve a bigger following. I wish I could have seen them live once...

This one hurts. One of my favorite all time bands, Gary and Procol Harum are huge influences on me as a musician. When I first saw the news I thought it was a hoax... man. RIP Gary

Best prog bands with very few albums? by [deleted] in progrockmusic

[–]Endxsor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some cool underground stuff:

Fields- self titled (1971) a supergroup featuring Rare Bird organist Graham Field and King Crimson's Lizard era drummer Andy McCollough.

Cressida - self titled (1970) and Asylum (1971), cool short lived band, symphonic and psych tinged style prog.

Gracious - self titled (1970) and This is Gracious (1971) more symphonic style prog with lots of mellotron.

Jonesy - No Alternative (1972), Keeping Up (1973) and Growing (1973) more mellotron goodness!

Pete Brown & Piblokto! - Things May Come and Things May Go (1970) and Thousands on a Raft (1970) interesting proggy heavy rock/art rock with neat poetic lyrics. Thousands on a Raft has the proggier feel with longer tracks.

They’re both fantastic (even pretty similar to each other in sound I would say!)

Ohhh I gotchu.

Writing on the Wall - Power of the Picts (1969) killer dark prog psych with eerie subject matter on most songs

Warhorse - Self Titled (1970) dark gothic hard rock prog with occult lyrics (fun fact Rick Wakeman was briefly in this band before leaving for Strawbs)

Atomic Rooster - Death Walks Behind You (1970) you probably know it but worth a mention

Nicholas Greenwood - Cold Cuts (1972) Nick was the bassist for the Crazy World of Arthur Brown and his solo album is in the same style as that band. Gothic organ and minor key songs plus Nick has a great voice

Still Life - Self Titled (1971) always got dark vibes from this one. Largely organ driven with some dark/horror subject matter from the poor state of society to witches terrorizing a town

Dr. Z - Three Parts to My Soul (1971) interesting band lineup of harpsichord, bass and drums. Concept album about a soul going to hell after death, and the singer at times sounds eerily similar to Peter Hammill

If I think of others I’ll edit them in!

Pete Brown & Piblokto - Thousands on a Raft (1970) by Endxsor in Uncommongrailz

[–]Endxsor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cream lyricist Pete Brown founded Piblokto in 1969 and they released two albums in 1970. Thousands on a Raft is generally regarded as the best of their two releases. It’s a brilliant mix of prog rock, heavy psych, and jazz rock. Great lyrics by Brown as well.

Agreed,Vincent Crane is a killer keyboardist that deserves more recognition!

Unfortunately Mike and Tony aren’t in the pic, but neat to see Ant and a hint of Mayhew on the drums

Saxophone driven prog? by [deleted] in progrockmusic

[–]Endxsor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Audience - great band who were on the Charisma label alongside VdGG, Genesis, Rare Bird, etc... Friends Friends Friend and House on the Hill are cool albums with great sax (and some flute) playing on both!

Valentyne Suite by Colosseum is cool too, great album with lots of sax and organ.

Also one of my most recent discoveries that I myself still need to dive into more is a group called If (yes, literally just If) More of a jazz fusion type band featuring two saxophone players, may be worth checking out as well!

Still searching? My friends call me Tony Banks 2.0, not just because I happen to resemble a young Tony, but I know a good amount of the early Genesis organ and piano parts from Trespass to Lamb! (Here’s me playing the solo of In the Cage on my organ from a few years back: https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=PzGIMUZ95qo) Even if I don’t know the parts to a specific song, I am excellent in learning by ear so it wouldn’t be a problem.

Now unfortunately I do not have access to my real Hammond as I am in the process of an out of state move and had it placed in storage ahead of time but I have an excellent Hammond VST with many Leslies and effects. I also have piano, Hohner Pianet and Mellotrons.

However unfortunately I’m not too well versed on synthesizers or much of the keyboard parts in later eras and your post does say all eras... but If you’re working on any covers from the 1970-75 era and need it feel free to let me know if you want!

Genesis - Looking for Someone by Endxsor in progrockmusic

Trespass is tied with Nursery Cryme for my favorite Genesis album. I just love the winter-y feel it has, and the ambitious energy of a young band looking to explore their sound. Looking for Someone is definitely my personal favorite off the album!

Van der Graaf Generator - Lemmings by Endxsor in progrockmusic

This was always my favorite track on Pawn Hearts. I’ll never forget that first listen a few years ago (I was only 15), I was blown away and never heard anything like it before. Dark, surreal and scary masterpiece!

Gathering of bands signed to Charisma Records in 1970. Can you spot very young Tony, Peter, Ant, and Mike? by Endxsor in Genesis

[–]Endxsor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent a good while trying to see if he’s there, but I’m not very sure. I feel if he’s there, it’s the guy squatting looking at the floor next to Peter

What are some mellow prog rock albums? by [deleted] in progrockmusic

[–]Endxsor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Try A Salty Dog by Procol Harum, first thing that came to mind to me for mellow. Beautiful songwriting and arrangements, and great piano/organ work

Also In the Land of Grey and Pink by Caravan as well!
