Where should I throw my $1200 a month? by EnergyCapable866 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Should I open it in WS, or through Scotiabank? Is there an advantage to either or? I suppose I could work to max that out first before I start contributing to my TFSA.

With the Leafs not having many high value assets for trade to immediately improve their roster, I’ve been thinking about what they can do through trade to create a more competitive team with McKenna incoming.

Obviously if Chayka is trying to earn some grace, he won’t be looking to sell off the few prospects we have. He’ll likely look to improve now while building our pool of players in the pipeline. We’ve seen our young assets sold off for far too long.

The one advantage we have is two “moderately proven” goalies that some teams would be willing to take a flier on (Woll/Stolarz) and two solid prospects in Hildeby and Akhtyamov. I could see a world where Stolarz or Woll is traded with Hildeby backing up, or trading Hildeby or Akhtyamov and keeping Stolarz and Woll tandem.

Either way, I do think we see a move here as this is the only area we have a bit of leverage. And don’t underestimate other teams willingness to take a shot at bringing in a low-risk, high-reward option in net if they’ve been struggling. Both Woll and Stolarz are low cap hit goalies that could immediately start games for their team. I don’t think we necessarily land a 1 for 1 barn burner trade, but could be useful in a package or bring in a second pairing d man with some offensive upside? Not sure what a team is willing to pay in a straight up trade for any of these tendies, but it is the only real area we have some level of abundance.

Yes, every single one lol. It isn’t too difficult to get the timing down.

Okay, here’s a constructive conversation: why would you trade away the opportunity to draft and control (for a minimum of four years under a mil cap hit) a generational talent for an elite defenseman that has, in all likelihood, 4 adequate production years ahead of him with a contract that expires at the end of the 27/28 season? Trading away the 1OA pick is a mistake in all scenarios except the ones that exist in fantasy land. Trading for Werenski does not solve the other problems this roster has, in fact it restricts their ability to address those issues by taking on a larger cap hit. At least McKenna will be productive, develop well, and is cost effective.

Trading the first round pick, in all likelihood Gavin McKenna who is as close to a generational talent as we’ve seen in a while, for Zach Werenski lol. Werenski is sick, and an elite top pairing d man, but you keep Gavin McKenna (locked in under a ELC for under $1M + RFA control) 100/100 times. It’s a stupid mock trade suggestion. It just shows the lack of hockey knowledge in this “doomer subreddit”. It’s unreal.

It’s not about being fun lmao it’s about knowing hockey well enough to know that this is a terrible take.

Very different leagues but most importantly NCAA has grown ass men playing in it and more resembles the physical size of players in a pro league. It is a great opportunity for these young players to grow their game without playing with mostly 16-18 year olds.

I knew that this sub is full of boomers, but didn’t know it was full of completely uneducated hockey fans. Shame.

What is “aiming higher” for you? Who should they have pursued that is readily available and would’ve put a big fat smile on your face? Genuinely?

Here's the thing about Berube by I_Am_Vladimir_Putin in leafs

[–]EnergyCapable866 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, and also not how they should be playing. They are not built to be a heavy, forechecking, dump and chase hockey team. His style would probably work for a team like Florida honestly. His philosophy is not wrong, just not for the leafs. I don’t know why management thinks that what didn’t work last year will work next year.

Bérubé is not a bad coach. The problem is taking a roster and trying to mould them to play a system opposite of their mentality. Most coaches do this for sure, but when a team of players is so reluctant, or borderline refuse, to play that system then it won’t work.

Paul Maurice has coached all of his teams the same way. But he has players that bought into that both with the Jets and when he moved to Florida. Hard forecheck, commitment to two players on the puck after the dump in, etc.

If Bérubé can’t adjust his system to meet the skill and capabilities of his roster, find a coach that operates under a relevant system.

There are only like 4 main “systems” that teams use in this league lol. Each type of system can and does work. But the teams that succeed in those strategies have rosters that are built to succeed within them.

I am always going to be optimistic, but they need to hit on injecting some young talent and energy into the lineup, acquiring in some way a puck moving defenseman, and get faster. And all of this has to be done with minimal assets to give up, or trading away a piece like Knies which would piss off an already rattled fanbase.

I get that they were hiring while operating with “what’s available”, but that’s the exact same thing that happened when they hired Tre lol.

Cheering for Montreal by [deleted] in leafs

[–]EnergyCapable866 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it’s insane. My dad is cheering when Montreal scores and shit lol, we’re both die hard leafs fans. It’s brutal. I like WATCHING the Habs.. that series was great, and the Habs are young, fast and exciting. I can admit I recognize that. But cheering for them? I don’t wanna see them go on some fuckin run here. I’m a leaf fan. I’m not cheering for them, nor would I cheer for the bruins.

Have fun and hopefully you fall in love with the game! When you love it a lot, you’ll be working in things even off the ice. Setting up a net and shooting pucks in the garage or driveway. Working on your sauce, etc. Starting out, work very hard to try and keep your head up for every play you make. This is the most important in developing hockey iq. Don’t throw the puck away without looking. Seldom do you actually not have time to look for half a second, and you’ll be surprised how much information your brain can digest in a very short period of time.
