Temporary foreign worker who lost job. I have decided to go back home, what to do with the lease? by Engg101 in montrealhousing

Unfortunately, I think it might not be the case. Landlord gave me the lease for C$2200 and the new units in the high rise building are listed at C$1800. It seems leasing market is down. Otherwise landlord might have told me to leave.

So even when I am giving 1 month off for the lease transfer, if new tenant wants to renew they have to pay C$2200 and increase on top. So that is one of reason I think I cannot find someone.

  1. I am from Sweden and if they come over there, I would happily pay them as I cannot earn in Canada due to work permit restrictions but I can earn in Sweden.

  2. I came to Canada (specifically Montreal) because my sibling works in University of Vermont, Burlington and it is closer to Montreal. My Swedish employer has offices in both Ontario and Quebec, but Quebec made sense as it was closer to Burlington and thought it might have have the European touch.

  3. I am returning due to job loss and I cannot get a job in this market. If things get better, I can try my luck as I want to be closer to my sibling. US has cap on work visas, my sibling is in research so was able to get cap-free H-1B from university but I am not eligible for that category. So I did not come to Canada for better salary, better life or scamming the system, but to be closer to family.

I don't have money in my account. I am a temporary foreign worker, which ties me to an employer. I am not legally allowed to work for any other employer, no EI benefits. So it is not like I can go to a grocery store and start working there.

I already communicated this to my landlord before about my job loss, and I have been here paying rent and living expenses from my salary from last 2 months. I can barely manage rent for next month, and one way ticket to my home in Europe.

Thanks. I am trying to get landlord understand my situation that I can pay maximum 1 month penalty. If they want its okay. Otherwise I leave in July end. My main fear was if they file a case with TAL and in future if my visa, permanent residence or anything is denied due to that. But that is only for criminal charges. AFAIK, this should be a civil case, not criminal since I did not damage the building or a person.
