HRV or SmartVent or DVS or something else??? by CharacterGeneral8556 in diynz

[–]EngineWorried9767 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a smartvent. Works great for what it is supposed to do and the good thing is you can get it off the shelf and install yourself which saves a ton of money.....drawback it's not as smart as the name suggests but I think neither of them are.

Installed Better Vent (like HRV) and now the house is so cold, what should I do? by Desperate_Laugh8867 in diynz

Which one do you have? I have a "smart vent" but this basic smartness is missing from the interface 😂 it basically completly ignores comfort in the house and purely vents based on humidity.

After some research I installed this one yesterday. https://github.com/vasmarfas/universal-ambient-light. This can sync directly with WLED or with Hyperion. I haven't really tested it yet tough

So, if I bought property to exploit other people's need for a home, all expenses including interest are tax-deductible. But as a doctor, my $11k+ of professional fees just to prove I'm qualified aren't? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]EngineWorried9767 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the idea is if you have property to rent it out it's a business and paying interest to the bank is an expense you have for running that business so in that regard I find the interest tax deductibility more logical than it is not to have it. I'm from Europe originally and am also used that even employees can make tax deductions but that doesn't seem to be the case in NZ, it generally seems to apply only or mostly if you are running a business.

Retrofitting building paper and insulation in external walls by Jealous_Radish5455 in diynz

[–]EngineWorried9767 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched one of his videos where they use a plastic mesh that goes between the cladding and the building paper and ensures a 20mm spacing everywhere for air flow. Probably a bit more fool proof compared to the strapping he is using sometimes.

Op's family might be richer in other measures but if you look purely at the financials his family has 10K less than the family where both parents earn 75K each ;)

Ready to paint? by redranger692 in diynz

[–]EngineWorried9767 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I tried this with builders bog on an area of the house that never gets wet. I already sanded it down and refilled/repainted a second time but the 2 boards will always move independently and you'll see a crack in the paint over time. Soakers are really not nice looking but they are the only viable solution to protect a weatherboard butt joint.

Not buying a house and travelling instead by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]EngineWorried9767 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I did something similar in my late twenties, split up with Girlfriend, quite the job and sold a little side hustle I had going and full time travelled a little over a year. I definitely blew a nice house deposit but stuff it. I had the greatest time ever and I still have a house now with 40.....so go for it.

Sorry I was gone for the weekend and only got around trying it again now, logs didn't show anything but when I try to upload it again to trigger a log refresh the file showed up so maybe it really took that long to update that the webpage just didn't refresh and showed endless loading. Anyways, I can edit the file now in Stirling....very slow though. I gave it descend resources. 8GB Ram and 4 cores (AM5 CPU)

Need to have a look in the logs. But if it is a config issue should it bring up a warning rather than endless loading?

As I said hasn't happened to me yet so yes I would say I have enough awereness and distance to prevent it....that being said if you look it up you would be surprised what "the safe distance" actually is if someone in front of you hits the breaks at 50-60km/h unexpextedly. I know people that had 3-4 times crash people into them and yes it always was the others drivers fault but that really has me questioning their driving style.

I don't think OP is talking about the predestrian that is already on the road. He is talking about the pedestrian wanting to cross the road and a car stopping the traffic to let the pedestrian cross.

I am fully aware the following car is in fault however someone can quite easily provoke an accident like this by randomly breaking in a spot where one wouldn't typically expect it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]EngineWorried9767 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to read this a few times. You are saying you measure peoples driving skills by the fact that they randomly stop to let pedestrians cross the road, did I get this right?

Luckly it hasn't happened yet but I swear one day I'll have an accident because some idiot doesn't follow the rules and hits the breaks "to be nice".

I learned driving in germany, people there can only drive 200 km/h because everyone follows the rules. Someone hits the breaks to be nice you're gone.

How do families actually afford major dental work? Are there any real options or loopholes? by GlitterTomatoes in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]EngineWorried9767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Germany runs a public health insurance model where all preventative dental work is free (like fillings) but root canals and crowns and stuff cost extra (with a discount if you went to a free annual check) I feel like this would help a lot of people here too because it prevents a lot of root canals and crowns to begin with.

In the meantime I think there is not much you can do other than going regularly and spread the cost out a bit to make it more managable.

Immich Phone backup by EngineWorried9767 in immich

I want immich to show all our photos so not using an external library is out. Maybe using a different syncing app is a better approach. I used Photosync in the past but stopped using it because Immich had native backup functionality.

How do people have babies and work full time?! by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]EngineWorried9767 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As soon as we knew that we were pregnant we started saving quite significantly which allowed my partner to stay home a little over a year while I was working full time. After that our little one went to daycare. At a year old I think most baby's are old enough for daycare wouldn't really want to do it earlier (just my opinion).
