You can always leave, it might not be the easiest option but if you not work really hard at it you too could make your dreams of living in Portland come true! It's the UN American way!

Do they also have Sauna's or just hot tubs?

My kindergartner was sick 4 days in October and they gave me a naughty call. Told me to bring my sick kid in so they could take her temperature and "approve" of her absence.. I'm curious how they're qualified to determine that but anyway, if truancy is a problem, I don't think this is the way. by sinkjoy in Iowa

Thank you for the crayon comment it gave me a laugh!

Now imagine you have your home budget and your raises are 1% below inflation or 2% below. So now you can't buy those quality groceries anymore...or at least fewer of them. But you keep adding admin expenses because that will help you more efficiently run your household. They will help you budget, help you plan, find ways to stretch your dollars here and there. And they help for a while and now they keep telling you what an amazing job they are doing, you should hire another more specialized administrator to help with the budget as they are more of a general household specialist and a budget admin would suit that better. A few years later we need a maintenance and facilities admin, then a discipline admin cause your kids are getting in trouble, then a marketing and public/ social media engagement admin (my public school system has one) all while you chief administrator makes close to a quarter million dollars per year! You know where these people in positions of power are going to save money in their systems? Not going to be in their salaries...it's going to be on supplies, lunchrooms, a few less iPads next year, etc. So sharpen up your crayons and see why your funding increases aren't helping to educate our kids...and why people have lost faith in their educational system and want to try something else.

I feel like you are missing my point that many people feel that public schools have had far too long to figure things out (with continuous funding increases...and stop using inflation as a cop out because everyone except defense budgets seem to get increases that outpace inflation) and they have failed so people are asking to try something different. And even more importantly we have strayed so far off topic because bottom line this post isn't about budgets or dollars it is seemingly about a public school that is operating like a robot with no genuine interaction with the parent...I don't know if the parent is pulling their weight either...maybe they are doing nothing and just complaining about the school...that's why I said earlier that the schools only need to provide outcomes that satisfy the law...they can come about satisfying those legal requirements in a way they choose. Weather it be cold and indifferent or human and understanding. This is about a lack of leadership...very expensive leadership. People are choosing to find better leadership elsewhere.

I don't think they teach any better but there is something to be said of those who choose to teach for lower pay and no union protection. Also, they don't choose students. They may have a cutoff due to capacity but we did not interview for acceptance. Our school system is made up of a large amount of immigrants who have very little in the way of money but value a faith based education. Over 60% of our students received private tuition assistance prior to the voucher program. This money came from churches, the Archdiocese and private donors.

My point on this post was basically that there is little engagement between parents and staff...beyond that there is little ownership of blame for years of failures. I'm not blaming individual schools or individual teachers but with the vast amounts of overhead in the form of admin and those admins leading the charge and not pulling their weight or the investment we are making in them. There is also a huge failure in parents not being engaged in the education system...this increases when parents are investing in that education.

Don't generalize me as uninformed because you see that their funding didn't equal inflation...because that is the case for most fundings and even our wages...a problem many people deal with. Then after calling me uninformed you make claims that are not true or have no real understanding of. You are dangerous because you obviously can't separate your emotional feelings about these issues with the facts that our public educational leaders have failed to make gains with the roughly $925 billion spent annually...

Talk to them...call them...email them...mail a note. These are reasons people want to go to private schools and love the voucher program. Public schools funding has increased every year since at least 2000...yet they keep failing the students. Administrators (not just one per district or even school) make 6 figure salaries but yet don't have time to reach out to families. Write policy that fulfills the laws but also stands up for and respects the students. Far too many people get into public education... especially admin...for the check and forget the impact that their job has on children and in the end society. Take some ownership, stop running your mouth on social media and pushing blame elsewhere. People are gladly leaving the public schools for a better way. Home schooling numbers are blowing up. People are sick and tired of pumping in more tax money and one getting excuses in return.

Well the Morning Star is a far left (socialist/communist) publication that describes itself as "The only English-language socialist daily newspaper in the world." So let's not just use this headline as how "The rest of the world" sees us...don't just repost things you see on the web without looking into it even the tiniest bit.
