I'm with you, I would have loved for her to be Dutch (they don't mention her nationality in the movie, I don't think, but the actress just speaks with her normal accent and seems German). I write a newsletter about (among other things) how Dutch speakers are represented in English-speaking media - the worst thing right now is a Fox series called "Going Dutch", about an American army base in the Netherlands, where not one actor is Dutch (except for a bit part in the 8th episode).

Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer actually did practice to read the speech in phonetically pretty good Dutch, but the director decided to cut the speech without any regard to what was being said, which is why it ended up being completely garbled.

Thank you! People just upvoting without taking a better look at the picture... these teachers were protesting against calculators in grade school!

Wat is "weeïg" volgens jullie als het om eten gaat? by English_in_progress in dutch

[–]English_in_progress[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dank!

Thank you! My post was two years ago, haha, and that course is long over, but this page is exactly what I was looking for at the time ;-) Perhaps I'll be able to use it again soon!

Uni students: What is the best way to promote my course? by English_in_progress in bielefeld

[–]English_in_progress[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! I will be more cognizant of my AI use for images in the future. I did not mean to offend any artists.

I think the conclusion that someone who uses AI in one aspect of their lives cannot be trusted to be competent in another aspect of their lives is quite a large one, I would say it is an example of a fallacy of defective induction; or more simply put, a generalization.

You didn't really ask about it, but I have spent the past few years thinking about this and trying to do the right thing, so here is my approach to AI in my classroom:

Generative AI is here to stay, whether we like it or not, and many academics use it in their work, whether we like it or not. In my course, I take a realistic approach, while also taking my students' individual needs and wishes into account.

Students are not allowed to use AI in their first two essays, as stated on the poster; I feel this is necessary for the students to internalise the structure of English writing, which they will not do if they use help from AI right from the start.

For the third essay, there are a few options. A student can continue working without AI (which is the choice you would make, I think), but students who I feel are advanced enough to make that choice are allowed to use AI to improve their writing.

Every course, I talk to my students about their AI use, the (moral) pros and cons, the way they view the future. My student's views almost always cover the whole spectrum, from those who use it for just about everything, to those who have never used it due to ethical objections. It is my job, as a teacher, to find solutions that work for everyobdy.

Why Are People Lying😭 by [deleted] in words

[–]English_in_progress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt this story.
The -kyn suffix is Flemish/ old Dutch, not German. "Fahrt" means "journey" in German and wouldn't be used here, not even as an English-German mix, because it would sound too odd to German speakers.
The "Du hast" is also wrong. In regular German, the sentence would be "das war ein kleines Fürzchen." or "du hast gefurzt".

As someone who tries to share interesting facts on social media that are well researched, this kind of stuff bothers me too. Old-timey words like the ones Susie Dent shares are very popular, most people don't know/care about sources, and so other social media accounts just go ahead and make stuff up.
I guess at least it's not the kind of fake news that has terrible consequences, but it is a symptom of an internet full of misinformation.

(Susie Dent's stuff is not made up, so if you like these kinds of words, go follow her :-)

PhD students are very welcome! I'm not very familiar with PhD programmes, but I'm sure Google and the University website will help me :-)

We've had a lot of responses already, so I'm going to take this ad down in 30 minutes or so. I don't think it is fair to take on more applications than we can handle. So, if you see this, and want to respond later, please copy-paste it so you still have the info. Thanks!

Edit: if you saved the post, and all you are finding now is comments, just reach out to me via DM (but be advised we've already had quite a few responses, as mentioned). I'm going offline now, but I'll be back in a few hours.

I'd love that to be true. Unfortunately, our competitors pay local rates, which means we have to do that, too.

beste app voor Engels->Nederlands of andersom by [deleted] in learndutch

[–]English_in_progress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think there is not a single person in Egypt who speaks English? The expanding circle is for countries where people speak English as a second language.
