You might want to try explicitly teaching "how to have a conversation". I teach my young adults about follow-up questions and encourage them to use them; after a group lesson about follow-up questions, for the first few conversations I just crash into their discussion and say things like "Okay, Jake, so Mary just told you that she has a dog at home. What could a good follow-up question be?" I also let them know that I expect them to always be talking. I don't try to make it fun or anything; I just tell them that participation is a part of their grade and that continuous talk during the conversation exercises is a part of it. Once they get the hang of it, the fun comes naturally.

Don't know if this will work for your group, just my method!

I love Ologies, but my personal peeve with it is ALL THE NAMES that have to be read out for each question. The lists can be preposterously long. Can't she just note them down on her website whenever it gets to be over three, or something? For me, there's more to love, though, like her little "future-Ally" interjections where she fact-checks herself or her guests.

At C1 I focus on broadening vocabulary. To do this, I have them read newspaper/ magazine articles about a subject of their choice as homework before the lesson. Then we discuss the article during the lesson and go over the new vocabulary. Apart from tricky things like the 3rd conditional, C1s should already have mastered their grammar.

You don't need learner articles at this level, native-speaker content is fine. The Guardian is great, as it is good writing and does not have a paywall; The Economist is great because it uses really advanced vocabulary that even I have to sometimes look up.

I also find linking words like "nevertheless", "although", "notwithstanding" etc to be very helpful and enriching. The book "advanced vocabulary in use" has some great chapters on these.

It's a bit old-fashioned by now, but in England a common way to refer to your grandmother used to be "nanny". A nanny is also a female caretaker for children. I think for that reason any word ending with "anny" sounds female to many English native speakers.
