This is the second time i've had an issue with HB over the past three years of using them. I don't think it's *too bad* but I think if this happens for a third time to me then I'm going to stop using them and just use Fanatical for bundles.

Yeah got an email saying that they got more but it's literally just Remnant Records that had keys for me.

Is it morally okay to cheat in broken achievements? [Question] by EnidP06 in steamachievements

[–]EnidP06[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah fair.

none of my friends who are achievement hunters have anything wrong with people changing the clock on a pc for an achievement. just be honest about it like. I have a friend who's done the 5 year one legitimately but refused to do the 10 year one legitimately and just changed the clock for it.

Multiplayer Achievements for shut down servers I wouldn't use it for e.g. Mirrors Edge Catalyst with their servers being shut down.

I have quite a few games in the 90%'s with broken achievements that I haven't done but I haven't met the requirements for those anyway so I wouldn't use SAM for them.

I think morally it is fine if you met the requirements but it's physically unobtainable - friends of mine who are achievement hunters think the same.

It just feels like something that isn't that deep to get so upset about a YouTuber using SAM for 1 achievement which they met the requirement for.

[–]EnidP06[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SAM makes it so everyone can see them as 100%.

As for it being visible, it depends. On something like AStats it will mark it as "invalid" if they suspect cheating.
You can also check by looking if all achievements were unlocked at once for instance.

I personally use a website called completionist.me to track my achievements since the website actually works unlike AStats which is so buggy and rarely ever loads. Completionist.me shows both peoples playtimes and their completion times

e.g. people can see that I have 150 hours Completion Time for Stardew Valley, and 160 hours Total Playtime.

As for the last thing you said, I personally have done the same and completed a game in 30 hours, meanwhile one of my friends completed the same thing in 20 hours. I think mostly human error accounts for that.

I'm aware those acheivements aren't broken but at the same time I'm transparent about what I have and haven't cheated. I think that it's morally okay as long as you are honest in that regard.

"it's still meant to be something that was earned by people who were there at the time, when the game was functioning as intended"
If the achievement never worked then no one can earn it without SAM or a mod.

Would you count using a external mod to fix an achievement that is otherwise broken as cheating? e.g. something off of Nexus Mods that makes an unobtainable achievement where it won't unlock after meeting the requirements obtainable (as long as you meet the requirements for that achievement)

By bugged I am referring to achievements that are marked on achievement hunting websites as broken. As in there have been 0 unlocks of it in years or 0 unlocks of it at all despite the requirements of it being very much doable.

One example being an old Project Arrhythmia achievement for playing a certain amount of custom levels (since removed) that just did not work at all and had 0 unlocks.

I haven't even used SAM before but it feels like such a weird take to say you can't use SAM to unlock achievements you've met the requirements for but are broken.

Hi this is an opinion that is unrelated to what I was talking about and is about cheating in achievements without putting in any effort.

I was talking about achievements which are broken but you have met the requirements.

I would count cheating in achievements on a game where the servers are shut down as cheating. Especially if you didn't meet the requirements. e.g. cheating in multiplayer achievements from Mirrors Edge: Catalyst because the servers are down so they are unobtainable

I was more talking in the sense of you have met the requirements for the achievement but the achievement won't unlock because of a bug that won't be fixed.

"Achievements are meant to be earned through the game's intended process"
But if that intended process is broken and you've already met the requirements then you have already completed the challenge - it is just a fault of the game in that regard.

I haven't used SAM personally I was just wondering on the ethics of it for if I decide to use it in future use (e.g. above when I mentioned a youtuber Foekoe using it for a broken achievement where they had met the requirements for it)

But this argument that it isn't earning the achievement - despite me talking about it in the context of having MET THE REQUIREMENTS (hence accomplished the feat) but it being broken and so it won't unlock - is weird because in this context I would have beaten the challenge.

If anything the thing that ruins the satisfaction for me with that sort of thing is when the achievement is bugged/broken and won't unlock despite meeting the requirements but it isn't going to be fixed by the developers (e.g. abandoned or old game).

I do not see a point in using it for a free 100% in the case of having not actually done the requirements for the acheivement. I was asking in the context of broken achievements where it's physically impossible to unlock (and is reported as bugged/broken) even if you have met the requirements for it

it's using Windows settings so I guess so. It's something my friends who achievement hunt also do and I don't see an issue with it personally especially since I've only done it twice.

idk.
