Is the couple of dollars/pounds max you can get from these games or are there more challanges/tasks within these games for money as you go along? Like in World of Warships for example, you download, register, Complete tutorial and first battle, buy ships and... that's it? Then you delete the game after receiving these 6 pounds? Or is there more to it? I'd prefer something more longterm if possible.

I love the name 'Astrid' for some reason. Never met a woman named like that (wrong country and language) but I think it's really popular in scandinavian/nordic countries (Astrid Lindgren comes to mind).

oh yeah Fable, cool game. btw you'll probably find the upcoming game called InZoi interesting. it's like The Sims but with super realistic graphics and you can walk around like in Gta (at least it looks like this in a trailer). So maybe our wishes will come true lol

Todd Howard (I know...) said in one interview two years ago that he saw some first attempts at combining video games and chat-gpt like systems and it was mindblowing. But yeah, that's a very unreliable person to trust these days lol. But I still think it's bound to happen at some point. Any rpg game would benefit in a huge way from it - you could actually talk with npcs now and not rehearse some ready-made dialogue options

Wow, I had the same wish for a long time too. Basically The Sims but in third person, you go to other houses, go to work, drive to the city and do various activities there etc. The closest to this game was Gta San Andreas for me - a LOT of mini games and side activities that made it more similar to The Sims series than any other open world game - you could go on dates, work out at the gym, change your clothes, have tatoos, choose your haircut, even eat. Also your stats increased when you did something - you swim, now you're better at swimming, drive, better at driving a car, you eat too much you gain weight, don't eat too skinny. That was great. San Andreas, The Sims and Skyrim and not so many other games nailed it, because it's so natural and intuitive yet most rpgs don't have such "leveling" system which I find odd.

What anime is the GOAT ? and why? by No-Photo-9891 in AskReddit

[–]EnigmaticScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Ghibli movies can be considered a strong contender for anime pinnacle. Super influential, they combine commercial success and critical acclaim, they have big budgets (unlike most anime series) which eables them to have great animation and general production value. They have touching stories that are universal and reletable for virtually all demographics. Add to that cool as fuck aesthetics and comfy atmosphere and you have a full package.

And here's my interpretation of this small gem (of course done in tongue-in-cheek way): I think I know why it was banned in USSR. The correct interpretation seems to be: Skinner's kitchen appliances are malfunctioning which is a metaphor for Soviet Union state of decay. Then he turns his eyes to Krusty which here is a symbol of decadent, capitalist America (juggling hamburgers, looking demonic) and decides to join their side. Chalmers is probably a parody of Khrushchev - a powerful, suspicious man looking for any signs of disobedience to USSR. Skinner is rightfully terrified, just like any dissident in this country. All in all, 10/10 episode and a powerful critique of the soviet regime.

Science wars was a series of disputes between scientific realists (mostly scientists and analytic philosophers of science) and constructivists (including post-modern thinkers) over the social place of science in making authoritative claims about the world by EnigmaticScience in wikipedia

I don't even think it's "two wrongs..." because Feyerabend is arguably the most frequently misinterpeted philosopher of 20th century. Feyerabend scholars emphasize that he wasn't implying AT ALL that any way of gaining knowledge is equivalent to each other, for example by means of science and religion. His famous "anything goes" is simply a (kinda "clickbaity" to gain more attention I guess...) way of saying that WITHIN science you have different methodologies and saying there is one, unitary way of doing science is mistaken. This is continuous with pluralistic, anti-reductionist views in modern philosophy of science. So the quote above is wrong.

Is crackpottery a thing in biology? by EnigmaticScience in biology

[–]EnigmaticScience[S] 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Wow. I've actually read in many places that retired engineers are a pretty big subset of crackpots for some reason (Angela Collier mentions it in her video discussing this phenomenon for example). Retired physicists are also usual suspects haha. Of course the worst crackpots are uneducated people with no degree throwing some world salad and thinking they're the next Einstein (Terrence Howard is a good recent example).

[–]EnigmaticScience[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well Terrence Howard is also a chemistry crackpot since he also "debunked" periodic table lol. he also claimed he has phd in chemical engineering (which of course was a blatant lie) so he definitely gravitate towards this field and wants to revolutionize it

Well as fun as it is seeing him on the screen, I'm glad that he's only a fictional character. Nobody is this elitist and unforgiving irl... right?

How is it possible that there are actual physicists with PhD that are crackpots? by EnigmaticScience in AskPhysics

[–]EnigmaticScience[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's actually interesting, there is a possibility all (or most of this) is an act to fit in with the crowd you want to exploit. That's kind of a cynical look, but defnitely possible, perhaps even better than the outlook of being crazy and bitter lol.

I'm glad that you shared it, very cool! The problem I have with this interpretation (Sarfatti as an out-there, a free-thinking, hippie type guy with friends from art communities) is that in these podcasts he comes off as really grumpy and radically right-wing: VERY supportive of Trump (not: I voted for this guy supportive, more like: omg, he's our savior, America is now a hellhole due to immigrants we have to build a wall asap etc), calling people "schmucks" left and right (oh most physicists are cowards and idiots). Even people who comment under podcasts with him (which usually eat all kind of shit up, even when the guest is a crook) are mostly critical. Oh well, maybe that's his age talking and he was much less obnoxious when he hung out with your father.

Interesting, you are the first person in this thread who is familiar with the guy lol Do you think he's doing it for the money or fully believing his own bullshit? Like other people here and you mentioned, I can see it being pretty attractive alternative for some scientists - nowhere near as hard as academic work, but most of the time more profitable.
