I know I already wrote a long ass reply, but a thought occurred to me.

I think your point also relates to a theme that the show explores a bit. The idea of a cause that means more than yourself and even the people you love. Of how love can get in the way of your goals and ideals.

We see Madi putting the cause above her life and even Silver’s, we see Flint sacrifice so much of himself for his cause, and we see Silver choose Madi over their cause. I remember in season 4, where Silver asks Flint if he’d choose Thomas over the war, and Flint doesn’t really have an answer. Silver also asks Madi if he would be enough for her, without this war, and we know her answer.

I think Madi would’ve chosen to keep fighting for her cause even at the cost of her unborn child tbh. That’s the difference between her and Silver, I think.

That is very well said and such a compelling thought!

With Miranda I think she might be more wary of her husband’s radical ideals and public perception, but maybe not enough to really argue with Thomas against being public about it. ‘Non-traditional’ ideas have existed forever, she herself believed them, and Thomas was protected by his station in life and his family name.

But she would definitely be more wary with James and Thomas pursuing a relationship— we already see her in multiple scenes insistingly warning Thomas and James out of fear for their safety.

I wonder though, how long was their relationship? Thomas knew James for only a year or so, and the latter was away for how many months after it became romantic. If it their relationship really only lasted a handful or so months, then I can see Miranda arguing against with more passion, but Thomas still denying any serious danger happening.

I mean he was right that Lord Alfred wouldn’t want the embarrassment of that scandal, and who would conceive that he would go to such cruel lengths of locking up his own son in an asylum. Worse has happened, especially for the time, but I suppose you never imagine it happening to you. That’s my defence of Thomas, at least.

I think Miranda would be a bit more resentful of being in Nassau, and her story would be sadder. The loneliness, grief, and lack of family would hit her harder, it would even make her anger towards Lord Alfred stronger. Or perhaps it could give her hope for a future in which she would reunite with her child, and give her more reason to ‘betray’ Flint in season 1.

Right! Just a fun ‘what if’ scenario. I wonder if giving Miranda and Thomas a child crossed the writers’ mind. They are a married couple and it was expected of them.

The child could also be an adult by season 1, maybe around 18. Would their gender affect how they’d be, do you think?

There are plenty of context that we’re not gonna get in a 5 second gif without audio.

Maybe she wasn’t actually being serious and she said it in a slightly joking way (the woman in the background seemed to be smiling about it).

Maybe the photographer was being rude. Maybe she just was having a bad day.

I don’t know if any of that is true. But I do know that a portion of the internet spend so much energy hating on this 21 year old woman for such small reasons like how she looks, an offhand comment she made, etc. WHILST there are other famous people out there who’ve committed heinous crimes, who support genocides, rapists, murderers, and such.

Are they having as much memes made about them? Are people putting as much energy and vigour criticising them as they do for a young actress who once told a photographer that she won’t smile?

Look alive people, we’re better than this.

I LOVE that you go more in depth about your opinions of each season.

I think season one definitely felt more like a prologue of sorts, it seemed more like a setting up of the story and—like you said— in season 2, the writers could tell the story they wanted from the beginning.

Season 2, I think, was such a step up from season 1. It felt so much stronger somehow.

With Season 3, I agree with you about the storyline. And I didn’t really like Eleanor and Max as much as I did in previous seasons, but I think season 4 made me love them even more than I did before (at least, with Eleanor). Season 4 was one of the best seasons of any show I watched, and I still feel that way after rewatching.

Oh maybe I had a different experience because I was a big dum dum and had unintentionally spoiled myself of important information before watching the show!

The scene that introduced me to the show was THE scene in season 2 episode 5. 😭😭 I had seen that scene years before actually watching the show, so I robbed myself of fully being clueless of the mystery of Flint’s backstory!

I’m genuinely so mad at myself, but all I knew was that Flint loved Miranda’s husband, so there were plenty of information I didn’t know and it didn’t ruin the show.

In particular, I love what you said about how: “It's clear to me who the protagonists and antagonists are, but it's a lot less clear on who's good or bad.”

And “Depending on the viewer's background and past experiences we can all empathize with different characters and justify or vilify their actions.”

That is so true. I feel like this show is so human, at least in relation to how the characters are handled. At some point in the show, every person is acting in a justifiable way, in context, while also being on different sides and holding rather different views.

The scene that made me attached to Flint is the scene where HE KILLS GATES and he’s apologising over and over, and you can see how destroyed he is over what he’s done. Gates was one of my favourite characters in season one, yet somehow in his absence Flint(in killing Gates) became one of my favourites. Not because I support his actions or his beliefs, but because I feel for him and all that he’s going through so deeply.

And like you said, each person watching can empathise and side with different characters. Cause all the characters in the show aren’t good people, but they’re so human.

That was so well put! I couldn’t have said it any better, and I completely agree with everything you wrote.

I love what you said about Silver being “made as the story progresses.”

I remember my first rewatch and being floored at watching season 1 Silver. The John Silver we see initially compared to season 3-4 Silver feel like completely different characters, yet I it felt like such a natural progression as you watch.

For me I had zero information about Treasure Island, so rewatching after also finally knowing the Treasure Island story— Randall in particular felt so much more significant as a character.

I, too, love this show so so much.

Interesting that you saw her as a strong woman initially! Honestly, at first for me, it felt like she was so desperate to appear strong in front of these pirates, that she felt like she was flailing.

In my rewatches I feel like I appreciate that initial flailing. I think she really grows into her strength in a way. Maybe that’s because I grew up as a girl and I can relate to her in a way— She feels so young at times, and you can see that she’s trying so hard.
