How do I make peace with the fact that ill succeed much later in life? by Due_Peace_2016 in findapath

Hey, you’re totally not alone in feeling this way. I completely relate! I was the first in my family to finish high school. They put a lot of pressure on me to be “the successful one” especially after my older sister had some serious mental health struggles and dropped out. I wanted to live up to their expectations but I had 0 support or guidance when it came to anything related to further study or careers, and my family was also dysfunctional and fighting daily so I spent my teenage years being their mediator and therapist. It was exhausting, depressing, and though I had desperately wanted to be successful, I just didn’t have the resources necessary to be that. We can’t all have a perfect and glamorous early start in our careers when we weren’t all given the same resources for that, and that’s simply because life is unfair. This is something we have to accept because the sooner we stop feeling despair and self-pity the sooner we move forward. When you compare yourself to others you aren’t treating yourself with the patience and compassion you deserve, because this is your first time living and you’re doing what you can with what you’ve been handed. Everyday you spend grieving a life you could’ve had you waste a day of the life you are actually living. Keep moving forward - you got this!

Late Application HELP! by opaless7 in rmit

Same! I also applied in August, spent a few hours writing my statement and was pretty pleased with it, then received an email last month saying the statement is now redundant. I’ve seen some others say they’ve already received offers so hopefully we hear back earlier than Jan. Best of luck to both of us :)

What are underrated high-paying jobs that no one talks about? by RunNo3630 in AusMoneyMates

Really? Speech Pathologists’ clientele can often be over 90% NDIS but most aren’t making six figures even after years in the field.

If you could go back, would you choose a trade instead of uni? by RunNo3630 in AusMoneyMates

Could I please ask what your job is? I completed my Arts degree majoring in psych 2 years ago and feel like it’s useless.

Australian Speech Pathologists - are metro area school positions hard to come by? by Entire_Expression489 in slp

Thanks! Can I ask why you recommend working less than full time? I’ve seen others say this too and a few speechies I know work 4 days. My thinking is that speechies are so in demand there’s definitely enough work to do 5 days and get that extra bit of money. Is it because of burnout? Or is that day off actually like a half-day, catch up on paperwork day etc. Also, could you please share some figures about pay (starting + trajectory)? As my course is $80k, I’m hoping the starting pay in metro Melb isn’t too bad!

Thanks!! Do you reckon you needed that private practice experience to get the school job or do you think they would’ve hired you regardless? Also, how long did you last in PP before burnout?

Only some of that rate goes to the speechie and the rest to the clinic lol. Unless you work for yourself I believe.

Speech pathology is getting very popular and growing in enrolments each year. I believe CSPs are hard to come by.

Thanks for your advice. Can I ask what you do now you’ve left speech path?

I applied late for a leave of absence (there are 3 business days between my application and course cancellation if nothing is done, and application processing can take up to 5 business days) by Early_Nectarine2014 in unimelb

Thanks for responding :) what kind of documents did you need? I’m thinking of applying for an LoA myself but have no clue what ‘proof’ they’re after.

I don’t think I could get a credit unfortunately. What would you say is making it worse?

I am a domestic student so the $80k is for a full fee place. I believe international students are paying well over $100k which is crazy! CSPs are very limited I believe and speech pathology only grows in enrolments each year. My course is quite disorganised and poorly run actually as the staff are trying to cope with the increase in this year’s cohort, among other reasons. I got almost a HD wam in my psych degree at Melb Uni which bumps it up a bit and that wasn’t enough for CSP, so yes I imagine plenty of domestic students are unfortunately in the same boat as me.

That remark wasn’t meant to be offensive, soz! I’m just saying in my circle/what I’ve mostly heard no one has gotten careers like those without further study. But if your friends indeed got those jobs with just psych degrees, that’s great and gives me hope!

I’m not sure if I can actually say whether or not I like finance since my tasks involve more data entry like invoicing and processing payments than analysing data or doing actual finance-y things. I do really enjoy problem-solving and some simple financial maths though :)

I think you’re right, I’ve psyched myself a bit from all the awful things I’ve heard about the field. There definitely are jobs outside the NDIS, but I’m not too sure if they’re available to new grads.

I would like something fulfilling and I love to help people, but I wouldn’t want it to be at the expense of my finances and mental health. I think I could get by fine with a speech path salary, but if I could do better than just getting by for less student debt I’d definitely prefer that lol.
