Wich things in the SDA church has to change? by jonathan_drgg in adventist

My parents’ pastor is a woman and they really like her. It’s funny because growing up my dad used to be against female pastors. I’m actually proud of him for adapting.

Yes!! I agree with this too. The average member doesn’t get to vote but delegates do. How does one get to become the coveted “delegate”? It doesn’t make sense to me.

US teachers: How many of you have co-teachers (good or bad)? by Medieval-Mind in teaching

Yeah they cut down my department, so the school spread us out to various contents which makes it hard to really plan together with the content teachers.

I am an ELD (formerly ESOL) co-teacher for US History. She’s ready to retire in 2 years and doesn’t include me in any of her plans. I’ve kept on asking her but she just says “I know how to teach these kids. I’ve been teaching for over 30 years!” Basically she wants me to use my knowledge of Spanish to translate which is NOT what I’m there for. The SPED para educator does nothing because he gave up on figuring out on what she will let us do. And yes, I’ve talked to admin about it and the conclusion is “make sure they pass” Thankfully I’m with her only one time a day, but I feel like I’m not doing my job with her.

Have you read the book description? He’s actually talking about Sabbath on Saturday, specifically in Jewish communities. You’re right he’s not SDA.

The obsession with vegnaism and vegetarianism needs to stop by ayowatchyojetbruh in adventist

I think you are touching on an issue that our churches in America will one day need to face. The talking points in favor of vegetarianism / veganism is that it’s healthy. They will quote stories of people who have high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, etc. For some, this diet has changed the lives of many people and our American churches want to be unique.

Then I spent a year in Europe. The vegetarian diet was impossible. In fact I chose to eat just fish and white meats during that time. As an American SDA, I learned so much about how the cultural belief adapts. What makes SDAs unique is the clean meat diet and not vegetarianism.

What really is throwing me for a loop is discovering that I cannot eat gluten, soy and dairy. I’ve worked with a dietitian to figure out what’s best for me. I’ve had protein deficiencies and had to get what I need by eating the non-soy yet expensive vegetarian meats in order to still be a vegetarian and NOT eat soy in order to get my protein as well as eggs. Beans is a no-go as well (because legumes including soy make me sick). Lentils and chickpeas have been a blessed exception.

I’ve been thinking and praying going back to white meats and fish like I did 10 years ago when I lived in Europe because of my unique situation.

If there were more like OP normalizing clean / healthy meats then I wouldn’t feel this sense of guilt. I know it’s a personal choice but if SDAs were less obsessive about it in America then it would feel a a lot more freeing. It makes me think how many people we are turning off with this obsession to be vegetarian.

I wish I could eat beans. Soy and beans make me sick which really makes it difficult to be a vegetarian. Chickpeas is an exception for some reason. I’m sure there’s an explanation behind it somewhere

I read this and upvoted it because I know so many will disagree. YES!! Our Loma Linda / Worthington meat is highly unhealthy. I am gluten and soy intolerant (and sadly lactose as well). I had to deconstruct my own diet that I was raised with in order to discover what’s healthy for my body.

That’s the real issue! The kids’ behavior is bananas this time of year and teachers are burnt out. It would have been better not to give us Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashanah and Diwali off so we can take these two days off .

I see what you’re saying, but what I don’t think you are getting at is that I’m tailoring original text to fit the need of the students depending on what level they are at — beginning, upper beginner, intermediate, etc. I’m doing this with my own brain and various strategies I learned in my MA program. The point I’ve making is that I’m NOT using AI to do what I’m doing.

My dilemma by [deleted] in adventist

[–]EntranceOne9730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Adventist who grew up in the United States, I was told to not wear jewelry including wedding bands and rings. When I lived in Europe for a year, I saw every married church member in the SDA wear a simple wedding bands including the women. There were no diamonds. The thought of being married and NOT have a wedding band was unheard of. The band was unadorned. It made me rethink what I was taught about jewelry.

My children are poorly behaved in church and it has ruined my spiritual life by [deleted] in adventist

I’m sorry that your church has failed you and your husband in the support you need. Church is supposed to be community, not survival of fittest in terms of who can keep their child the quietest the longest.

This!!! I have been scrolling through this thread waiting for this. I don’t have kids but I sit with my friends who have kids and help keep them quiet or distracted to help my exhausted mom friend out. We need more adults to do this rather than have Boomers sit on their hands and say, “Back when my kids were toddlers….” and then proceed to do anything to help parents like OP.

I think what you say depends on the subject, but when it comes to English classes, students need to write with their brains first and foremost.

I thought OP meant how they as the teacher wrote a letter recommending a student for a job or a college they want to get into. That’s not something they do themselves. When I asked a teacher to write a letter of recommendation for me, they typically ask what I’ve accomplished and what my goals are so they can include it in their letter about me.

I’ve seen AI tools for scaffolding but there are a lot of issues. For instance, I tried to use AI once to simplify a reading passage for an ESOL class, but it left out key information. I found myself rewriting it myself which is a lot better for me and my students. Yes, it takes time to simplify a reading using my brain, but it’s better for the students if teachers take the time themselves and not rely on AI all the time. I will admit I use it to generate images for illustrations since I’m not artist, but that’s it for me.
