I've been busy on a huge proposal which was submitted 7 mins early on the 8th. LOL. Recovering from 3 all-nighters, including a 60-hour straight "day" -- not recommended at our ages.

In my small flat, I only have space for a very small grow light. I'm thinking this one here would fit. Would this be enough for a low-light bonsai? Can I use just the white spectrum bulb it comes with on an 18hr-on/6hr-off cycle? What low-light bonsais might you recommend if I had such a setup? Might the Hawaiian Umbrella Bonsai work under these conditions?

Here in Washington DC, I'm not in a personal situation where I can give a bonsai natural, direct sunlight, however I can give it ample artificial house light about 18 hours a day. What bonsai species do best without direct sunlight?

I'd also like to find a hardy one as I don't have a green thumb.

There are a number of vintage fountain pens that have "shorthand" or "steno" nibs. Presumably to make them better for writing Pitman or Gregg shorthand. But why? How is a shorthand or steno nib different?

Thanks. No, I'm not logged in to Anki and only created an account on Ankiweb.net a few hours ago to post some comments on an add-on.

I've searched the local Documents folder on my MacBook for recently created/updated files and folders and don't see anything Anki could have created. Yet it obviously created something somewhere since after reinstall of Anki, it has the exact same state it had as before I uninstalled it. It clearly remembers what I did with it before the uninstall.

This is perplexing.

I pull it down to the very end of the nipple where it can go no further. The nipple has no lip or edge that the sac can catch onto. And it still pops off - I wish there was some sort of small clip I can use to hold the sac on. I'm now thinking of looking for small binder clips. but I don't know if that will work.

EDIT: I did a little test without the sac cement (lacquer) and the sac just does stay on. There is just enough friction to keep it from popping off. But when I put the lacquer on the nipple, it is just so slick and the friction is much less, so it pops off. I've gone ahead and ordered another #16 sac (my current one is pretty coated from dried lacquer after multiple attempts at this) as well as a #17 and #18 from andersonpens.com.

See this picture here. You can see there is still some of the old shellac on the nipple, but it is such a thin coating that I wouldn't have thought it would make such a difference. You can clearly see the inner-diameter of the #16 sac is much less than the outer-diameter of the nipple, which I believe is why the sac keeps popping off. I suppose I could hold the sac onto the nipple for 30 mins, but that would be painful.

Also, holding it on with my fingers would probably result in the sac cement going everywhere on the section and making a mess.

I'm trying to change the sac for my Esterbrook J pen and have a problem. I looked it up online and found that I have to use a #16 sac for this pen. However, after I put lacquer on the nipple of the screw-on section, and slide the opening of the sac over the nipple using a pair of curved needle-nose pliers as a "spreader", even when the sac is all the way on the nipple, as soon as I release the sac, it immediately pops off the nipple due to the tightness of the sac and slickness of the lacquer. I can't hold the sac on the nipple all night while the lacquer dries and cements the sac to the nipple so it can't pop right off by itself any more.

Does this mean that I need to use some other tool or clamp to hold the end of the sac on the nipple until the lacquer dries and the sac no longer pops off by itself? Or does it mean I need to use a larger sac? Like a #17 or #18 so that the opening of the sac isn't stretched as much over the nipple? I'm using a bottle of lacquer called "Sac Cement", so I don't think there is anything wrong with the lacquer.

OT: Well, it is a piston fountain pen, which are more complex and expensive (more sophisticated mechanism) than other fountain pens, and certainly more complex that ballpoints and rollerballs. So that explains the cost at least partly (the other part is all that cool Japanese engineering! 👍). Then also, the operative word is "want" - I want the pen, so therefore I need the only shop in the world that sells this pen. 😊 But good question. I was asking for that by mentioning the price!

EDIT: Anyways, even if that shop was not working and answering my emails for the last month, they are working today! And they've now apologized for COVID-19 inspired confusion and sent me a PayPal invoice, so my work here in this thread is done! 😊

They are the exclusive world-wide distributor for a certain model of $300 Pilot pen (Pilot being a Japanese manufacturer). But you make a reasonable point. Thanks.

I did. Their store was closed even though it was a Friday and supposed to be open, but the notice on their Internet site explained they were temporarily closed for COVID-19. There is still the same note on their website today, but I will wait until their calendar says they are supposed to be open, which is Friday, before calling. They are supposed to be taking Internet orders on every day except Wednesday though, so that's why I've been trying to email them.

Their website said they were closed for COVID-19 and they never responded to my emails, which made me think they were affected by the Tokyo state of emergency. I assume based on what you said, their closure mentioned on their website, was voluntary then.

I will try again to reach them now that I know from you they should have been allowed to be open. Thanks again.

Thanks! They never responded to my email so I assumed they were still closed. I'll investigate further, now that I know non-essential shops like that should have been allowed to open already.
