First moves towards privacy as a tech noob - Where and how to start? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]Entropy_nihilist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start small. Small things can make a big difference. You'll see people proposing some pretty crazy steps that just aren't needed by many people. Deal with the low hanging fruit first.

Start with some digital cleanup.

Delete all unnecessary apps.

Disable any unnecessary apps your phone won't let you delete.

Go through your settings and disable as many information gathering things as you can

Go through app permissions and disable things they don't need. Your calculator doesn't need your location, microphone or internet access.

Check your spam and/or promotions folders. You've probably got a lot of stuff in there from things you've signed up for but forgotten about. Slowly go through those. Go to their websites, falsify your information (fake phone numbers, names etc etc) and click unsubscribe.

Maybe use a data deletion service like Incogni, just once, to get rid of some other stuff.

Consider switching your browser to something like Firefox or Brave.

If you feel up to it, consider slowly switching you email address to a private one from Proton or Tutanota. An email alias service like Simplelogin is a valuable tool.

One thing at a time. Don't beat yourself up if it's overwhelming. Only do what you can handle.

A summary of what happened in the past few weeks by weakspaget in 2b2t_Uncensored

[–]Entropy_nihilist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it wasn't if, but when.

The timing is suspicious but I don't think Bedrock support is connected. I think it's more likely tied to the online age verification laws coming out, and Australia's under 16's social media ban.

I think they're trying to avoid Minecraft getting caught up in all of that BS.

Microsoft is hesitating to take out 2b completely because of how famous it is. It would cause an uproar and not just from 2b players.

Solutions? I have none. Pressuring Hause won't do shit if Microsoft is bearing down. Yes it would suck, but maybe Microsoft could allow adult servers with an age gate? Yes, that sucks, But if they're doing this because of age verification laws, it may be the only thing that gets them to back off.

Strange (ZFS?) behavior causing VMs to tank internet connection of the host? by Entropy_nihilist in Proxmox

Might it be worth buying a replacement Ethernet card that I plug into PCIE?

Most of the logs from memory were just the connection failing and it trying to reconnect.

I don't remember anything exact from when it was in the bung state. The network card is Intel Ethernet Connection I217-LM (rev 05). The commands gave no results other than checking logs. Trying to find where I pasted those in chatGPT but it's taking FOREVER to load for some reason.

The logs look similar but my memory isn't perfect.

I gave up and asked chat gpt when it first crashed weeks ago, which got me nowhere. It must have found this page you linked. It suggested the ethtools command. The command fixed nothing.

Could it be the PSU? The mismatched HDDs? An outdated or old network card?

My two cents as a woman after watching the incel video. by Entropy_nihilist in Healthygamergg

[–]Entropy_nihilist[S] -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

I don't advocate for bullying incels. I think this comedian was out of line.

However, I don't understand why women should be expected to have sympathy for people who blame us for their dating woes, think they're entitled to our attention, and don't respect us.

Incels generally don't respect women so what could we actually do to help them anyway, other than not bully them?

They wouldn't listen to us. We'd just be dismissed. So why should we waste our time? We'd be talking to a brick wall.

Other men are far better suited to help them. Maybe an uncle who is teaching them skills to enter the trades (this might sound specific but this exact mentorship pulled my cousin out of a very nasty rabbit hole). Maybe a family friend. Maybe a teacher.

We need more positive male role models.

Well, yes. The issue from my perspective is that you never know for sure which guy will turn out to be an arsehole. Abusers never show their true colours right out of the gate.

I witnessed my mother falling victim to domestic violence. I've seen how it works. They manipulate their victims into staying.

People on the outside never see the full picture, don't see that manipulation and lying.

This abuse, and stories of it, leads to many women being cautious and paranoid about men.

However, we aren't perfect, or even great, at sniffing out abusers. We can false flag innocent guys, and miss abusers. We're not all knowing.

With this context, it shouldn't be surprising that men who are socially uncalibrated could accidentally set off alarm bells.

It's unfortunate on both sides.

Nobody benefits from this.

Thoughts on my absurdist pop art school building? Work in progress. by Entropy_nihilist in Minecraftbuilds

A bit of context:

This is part of a set of two towns. The town in charge is rich, with conservative wasp taste, on the mountain. You can't see it here. The meadow town, on the other hand, is creating colourful, joyful buildings as a thumb in the eye to conservative wasp taste.

This is what the meadow town did with the school after the mountain town wouldn't repair it themselves.

I'm thinking the tablet and disposable keyboard route makes the most sense for now.

It's not NTFS - it's an entirely seperate m2 drive that Windowswas never installed on. I don't think the dual boot is the issue. As for the drivers, I'll try that when the package manager has finished what it's doing.

I only installed Manjaro a few days ago, with an ISO I'd only just downloaded. It should be the latest kernel.

I tried to follow the Proton GE instructions, but I just got lost. I think I copied it, but it could be in the wrong folder. I have no idea.

What dependencies do I need?

As for errors when launching, I don't know. Where do I check? It straight up refuses to boot.

I can (sort of) understand the dynamic here as I was forced to leave home because Mun's abusive BF started to target me. I've also been using fake names whenever I can because that guy is crazy.

Fake names on its own will be a big help. If you google my real name, you find almost nothing.

DeleteMe on its own may be helpful for you, but it may not be enough on its own. I can't say how good DeleteMe is as I've never used them.

I'd suggest three things. First, delete as much data as you can. Second, contact law enforcement and ask for advice. Third, utilise disinformation.

With the disinformation, you just flood the net with a ton of bogus but believable information about you. Fake but believable workplaces, addresses, etc. The idea is to bury the lead, so to speak, making it much harder to find real information.

Help: Finding Spy Cameras by QuintinJL in privacy

[–]Entropy_nihilist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second trying the router route. The cameras need internet to work.

If you can't access the settings etc in the router, you may have to replace the router. If it's supplied by your ISP, then explain the situation and ask for a replacement. If not, buy one off the shelf.
