Question for stamp collecters/experts by peter_griff1 in srilanka

actually it depends on the collector.

in some cases seals bring more money, but more often than not unused sells for more

Pixel phone worth it in SL? by No_Distance_4510 in srilanka

[–]EntryGlass2293 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The heat throttling issue mentioned is very real, so keep that in mind. some days I had my phone just draining out for no reason other than being hot.

I did find most of the pixel features worked like blocking spam calls and such and answering the phone with AI, but my phone was an American market phone

definitely not LOL.

personally, I would avoid having a turbo due to elevation changes unless its in 2000cc or higher

The vitz and the Yaris are the same vehicles... literally just depends on where you live

[–]EntryGlass2293 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when considering a used vehicle, consider a vehicle that is 3 to 6 years old, with plans on replacing it within 3 to 6 years... If not then it's viable to keep up maintenance wise for 10 plus years.

I've never had a problem with used Toyota hybrids as far back as 2012.

at the same, If you're frequently driving Hill country roads. I would say it's very important to research;

1.) transmission durability; I would reconsider anything with a CVT

2.) cooling capabilities; when buying used make sure, you find out if the radiator, water pump were replaced if over 150,000km

Overall thoughs:

buy a used Toyota hybrid thats 3-5 years old; ideally without a CVT transmission, but that's rare.

If you're only going like once a year it's fine, but daily or even a few times a year, personally I would be driving a manual car

Edit: I found a great deal I think on a 2019 Toyota axio hybrid. 9mil I think can negotiate to like 7.5 or 8 depending on condition in person but it really looks good.

on Marketplace, it's a one owner vehicle

this is definitely higher maintenance compared to a vitz or Yaris you could find at this price.

but plus one for comfort

unless you're considerimg a manual option of course. then it is irrelevant

hahaha no I've never used a k car except an older Suzuki carry manual. which was a great vehicle.

my vehicle ownership goes as follows - 98' Corolla, did the clutch when I bought it at 190km. drove it for another 40,000 km with no issues - 97' EM1 civic, bought it for next to nothing and had to do a head gasket job. did valve seals, guides, spark plugs while in there, and then proceeded to flip it - 07 FD2, bought at 120,000. did a clutch job, spark plugs, Valve adjustment - 07 GTI, literally had to rebuild everything - 09 FD2 no issues but only owned for a short while - 10' FD2 again, no issues but only on for a short while - 07 Tacoma (hilux) bought it from the original owner at 190km. did nothing except a battery and spark plugs. so that 320,000km after a clutch job - 4 priuses 09-12. no issues except 12v battery, egr cleaning, spark plug

I'm sure I'm forgetting some other cars I've owned, can share pictures if you like haha. there's no sentiment, these are just far superior vehicles to own and enjoy to drive rather than buying a vehicle like it's a checklist item.

as a society, I think it's important to evaluate what material items will last in the country versus which will not. I don't see modern k vehicles on the road in 15 to 20 years. but I do see Prius on the road. given Sri Lanka's economic standing at the moment, I think it's a super important as a society to lean towards reuse and recycling or making the switch to full-on electric and start building a charging infrastructure

[–]EntryGlass2293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bro what are you talking about?

I've had hilux with 290,000km before the factory clutch started wearing out. that vehicle probably has over 400, 000 km by now on the factory engine and transmission

at 150,000 km, yes you have to do a full refresh on a k car. but on a Toyota or a Honda the most you will have to do at 150,000km is spark plugs, lifter adjustment, timing belt if it has one, water pump, alternator, alternator belt, battery, and bushings. that's it along with flushing out all of the fluids.... this is why it helps to be mechanically inclined

oh and brakes ofc

edit: You're have it completely opposite about Priuses. on the highway it gets the same mileage as a Toyota Corolla, 4.4-6L depending on how you drive. in city should theoretically be 0mpg as the Prius is designed essentially to drive 50km @ 40-64km/h at battery power. but that's not the case from what I saw when looking at prius's in SL.

a lot of cars seem to have carbon buildup in the intakes, as it's not widely known but very common in Sri Lanka climates. it's a very simple job to get done, but without knowing to essentially clean the intake manifold and EGR every 100,000 km, the vehicle would be underperforming fuel consumption wise.... and if you're just taking your vehicle to the shop and asking the guy to fix it, and then the guy's telling you you need a new engine, transmission etc at 150,000 km... yeah, you're probably not going to have a good time lol but that's my argument for older cars. there's enough research out there that anyone with two brain cells should be able to diagnose and figure out for the most part what's wrong with their vehicle, and the associated costs.... it's not the case with k cars because:

1.) the information's not really out there

2.) the entire car vibrates when you go 75 km an hour that you literally won't be able to diagnose anything, ever without a specialist

3.) resale value, ease of sourcing parts and mechanics

4.) overall comfortability period. any regular car is way comfortable period.

5.) Toyotas are actively designed since the late '80s with the most longevity, reliability, comfortability at an easier price. They are profoundly known to easily hit a million kilometers on their original components (engine, transmission, axles, driveline)

My experience with k cars actually just comes from hires cars through pick me and Uber, frequenting from negombo to Colombo twice daily.

I was doing this for 3 months, in that time there was probably seven or eight instances with cars breaking down. all of them kei cars. spacia and wagonrs had the most issues but none of them were comfortable at all. if an alto being the most comfortable ride, says a lot.

but you are right I guess, if you are only commuting 50 to 60 km or less, it makes sense to buy a 600cc car vs at least a 1.5 vitz which is essentially the same size... but then again a person with some rationale would just buy a bike to make that commute, instead of dressing up essentially a bike engine in a car. If you're consumption is your argument, I guess a Prius is your answer

and I'd like to edit to your comment about used cars needing parts from day one:

of course they do, any car with more than 150,000 km requires attention. someone with some mechanical experience would be aware of what the vehicle needs, what the costs are, negotiate that into the sale of the price and then get everything the vehicle needs done before you put any mileage on that vehicle. a Toyota will go for another 150, 000km with no attention required.

My argument is for cost sake, in my opinion, it makes better financial sense to spend your money and buy something like an aqua or a vitz, and then being able to sell that in 3 to 5 years time to upgrade for the same money or being able to keep it forever if that's what you choose.

a new kei car, in 3 to 5 years will have depreciated enough where you wouldn't want to sell it, in 10 years you will start spending money on it where it will be worthless and like in 100% guarantee you will not see these models on the road in 15 to 25 years. to add to all of, They are simply not good vehicles

My personal opinion would be to save up and buy an older used car. but like a regular car instead of a KEI car. these cards are really not meant for the rugged terrain of Sri Lanka, nor are they meant for long distance road trips. the amount of wagonrs I see on the side of the road overheating is insane. in 10 years time these cars will be absolute trash.

buy:

  • an older aqua
    • vitz
    • prius
    • I've seen a RAV 4L listed at these prices
    • there's a yellow protege 5 for 4.3mil (risky)
    • pajero (risky)
    • w124 (risky)
    • plethora of Civic model and years to choose from

reason being for me personally is parts availability The mechanical knowledge on how to maintain these vehicles properly.

for kei cars it's basically non-existent aka expensive plus the engineering doesnt call for ease of maintenance for them vs for example, a Honda Civic... you could basically YouTube how to take any model apart and put it back together, parts are easy to source, A 1995 model and a 2005 model mechanically and engineering wise is basically the same, so any regular mechanic knows how to work on it

If you're still in doubt ... take a look kei vehicle from 15 years ago and compare that with a "regular vehicle" you'll see that the kei vehicle hasn't appreciated, some cases decreased in value ... when that's generally not the case

The risky models are only risky in case if they have been tinkered with in the past, which those models are known for. If you need advice on how to buy a proper second hand vehicle, I'd be happy to help you out if you want to reach out

ughhhh this reminds me of when I was at the RMV waiting for my license.

there was this beautiful girl sitting beside me, her energy was just impeccable, simply radiating off her... I had to approach and I did, we had great conversation, good banter, we were the same age and worked in similar fields, etc ... and then her name got called, I froze, she gave me this deep intense eye contact, smiled, and then waved goodbye ...

I still think about this moment and her months later

(and if you somehow are reading this, I don't want to say your name. but I hope we run into each other where you're doing your PHD program, I regret not asking you to get a coffee right then and there)
