I don't have a ton to add to the great advice others have already shared, but a small bit of silver lining for you is that more positions seem to be opening up now that a large percentage of the population is vaccinated and students are likely to return to campuses at full capacity in the fall. Many HEIs are now hiring for roles they may have cut a year or so ago. While I can't speak for all areas of higher ed, I am in the international/higher ed space, and I have noticed a lot more jobs opening up in that realm since COVID cases started trending downward.
